Sony: PS3 OS Wasn't Final at TGS

The PlayStation 3 operating system used at the Tokyo Game Show was apparently not final. Sony confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the company has been in the process of finalizing it and that just like the Wii's OS, it will be upgradeable in the future. More within...

Last week when the news broke regarding the PlayStation 3's technical and overheating problems at TGS, one of GameDaily BIZ's industry sources indicated that the PS3's operating system was not final at the Tokyo Game Show and that that may have led to certain glitches that players experienced at the event.

As it turns out, our source was correct (about the state of the OS) as SCEA has confirmed to us that the OS used in the PS3s at the show were not final. In fact, the OS may still be in the process of being finalized currently and it can be "flashed" into the machine at any time, even after all the other hardware components are made. It's likely that it's being refined up to the point that Sony is actually ready to put the consoles in boxes for retail.

We were told that this should not affect PS3 production whatsoever. Moreover, SCEA does not believe that the state of the OS at TGS had anything to do with the system resets or other glitches that some witnessed. Sony reiterated that it was the confined cases and other unfriendly trade show conditions that caused problems with the consoles.

In addition, Sony said it has the capability to upgrade the PS3's OS after the console launches through its online network, memory stick files or Blu-ray discs. It was revealed recently that Nintendo's Wii will also have this capability. The multipart Iwata Asks interview on Nintendo's website states, "Wii is the first system from Nintendo that we can continue to be involved in (via operating system updates) after the customer buys it. This means that Wii will greatly expand and diversify the ways in which people will enjoy games in the future."

Both Sony's and Nintendo's OS updates sound quite similar to the Xbox 360 dashboard updates that Microsoft has been providing. Technically we're not sure if Microsoft's updates are actually for the 360's OS, but the premise is the same—to introduce new features to the console. [update: MS has clarified that their updates are OS updates as well. "The seasonal updates to the Xbox Live dashboard are functionally OS upgrades in the sense that the firmware that runs the 360's various components are being updated, offering new and improved features," an MS spokesperson told us.

EGM CoD3:

After a chance to get hands-on with the 360 version Call of Duty 3, we have to wonder whether Activision has been a touch too successful in its mission to put players in the boots of Allied soldiers in the Normandy offensive of 1944.

Treyarch is bringing new narrative strength and focus across from its work on last year's Big Red One spinoff, although the unrelenting intensity is more reminiscent of Infinity Ward's headlining sequel. The shouts, the mud, the mess, teh heart-in-mouth physical proximity of the action are all there. But the relentless, unvarying onward slog and the constant barrage of noise are more acquired tastes; and the confused sense of never quite being in control of what's happening - or even sure whether your shots are connecting - are not necessarily things you'd want to replicate at all. Audio-visually, though, it's overpowering - successfully trading a little finesse and detail for a combination of credibility and raw impact.

A somewhat reluctant demonstration of PS3 code brings us back to present-day battles with a jolt. With a painful framerate and only rudimentary lighting and shaders in place, the game looks cold and flat next to the gritty bombast of its 360 counterpart, and far from ready for a November launch. It's clear that it will be a race to the wire, in uncharted territory, to get it to match the 360's performance, let alone edge past it. Ii speaks volumes about the last-minute brinkmanship behind the launch of Sony's machine that such a high-profile, high-priority project had at time of asking only just gained access to the tilt-sensing technology, and had had no time to explore its implementation (or otherwise).

Itagaki interview

While speaking about PS3, how is the development apprehended on this machine?

Very well, the development on this console is really easy. On the other hand, one has less of flexibility than on Xbox 360. I do not want to return in the technical details, but I would say that the PS3 is an “obstinate” console. If one wants to obtain good results, one is obliged to cheat much more than on 360, who it can work oneself like a PC. It is possible to work there directly in bond with Windows. The PS3 has a Japanese OS, therefore different of Windows! In more our Japanese engineers do not want to yield vis-a-vis the power of Microsoft, we have this competitive spirit to create different interfaces, to symbolize our different culture thus. But I do not think that the PS3 or the 360 is better one than the other. PlayStation 3 is a little more powerful, but as can be to it a console which leaves one year after another. They have both of qualities and the inherent defects. PlayStation 3 is “obstinate”, but I am it also, therefore finally it is not awkward! (laughter) the true gross difference here, they is that the PS3 is Japanese, therefore the Japanese prefer the PS3 generally.

PS3 Call of Duty 3 to Have Online Multiplayer

But currently, the game's running slower than on 360

UPDATE: To clarify this story a bit, judging frames-per-second is highly subjective, unless we're hearing the words straight from the developer's mouth. In this case, it's from the writer's hands-on impressions, and while we can't be sure the PS3 version's running at 30 FPS or the Xbox 360 one exactly at 60FPS, it's clear there's a difference between the two, at least, and that's what matters.

ORIGINAL STORY: With word that Neversoft was dropping online multiplayer for Tony Hawk's Project 8 on PlayStation 3 because they didn't have enough information from Sony yet, doubt has been cast on nearly all launch-scheduled games. You have to raise an eyebrow, though, when another game under Activision's umbrella, Call of Duty 3, is reiterated to have online support at release.

Could it be that Neversoft just doesn't have enough time? Either way, a GameDaily hands-on with the PS3 version confirms with developer Treyarch that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will incorporate 24-player online multiplayer across multiple game modes, including Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.

Though likely nothing to become alarmed about, the report also points out the PS3 version is currently running at 30 frames-per-second, as opposed to Xbox 360's supposed 60 frames-per second. The game still has development time ahead of it, and the last few weeks are always spent polishing and tweaking, so hopefully the gap will be minimized before launch.
