Ubisoft Dev says porting to PS3 means less available memory

dot_clear.gif

A Ubisoft developer was recently quoted as saying that porting titles over to the PS3 from Xbox 360 (their main development platform) means that there is less memory available and implied there is a DROP in quality of which they're trying to resolve.

quote:

Taken from Games Radar, from Edge magazine:

"Further to the Edge comments this month about how much better Call Of Duty 3 looks on 360 in comparison to the PS3 version, I noticed this in GamesTM this month On Rainbow Six Vegas.....

'' .....a chat with the Ubisoft development team shed a little light on he matter."All I'm able to say is that we're looking to ship on PS3 as well but we're not having specific content.....we're developing with 360 as our main development platform and porting to PS3 means that there's less memory available for us to use, but we're trying to minimise any drop in quality"..Such comments sugget that the gap in performance between Playstation3 and Xbox 360 is nowhere near as powerful as some would like us to believe and that the console may even be less able than Microsoft's..."

They also go on to say that only the 360 version will feature the face mapping technolgy and that their are no plans for PS3/PSP linkage or to use the sixaxis tilt technology.

EDGE Magazine about Motorstorm

As many have anticipated, it's not going to be enjoyed in 1080p. "1080p, I think, has got an awful lot of future - lots of positives."

"We decided on 720p early on in the project."

Sony Prices Japanese First-Party Games at $50

Resistance: Fall of Man, Genji cheaper than expected.

Third-parties have been quick to sell their wares at $60, $10 above the typical asking price last generation. Microsoft, however, briefly maintained a policy of pricing first-party games at $50, presumably because they don't have to deal with licensing fees. The policy will drop starting with Gears of War next month, but at least in Japan, Sony appears to be sticking with Microsoft's original plan.

Both Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji: Days of the Blade will retail overseas for 5980 yen, about $50. Third-parties like Sega have already confirmed a $10 higher price, though it's unknown if all publishers will follow in Sega's lead. Considering it means more money, don't be surprised to see it happen.

The question is whether Sony's adopting said policy is only a launch strategy designed to move more units out of the gate (plus, shooters are traditionally unpopular in Japan to begin with), with a planned switcheroo when more of the big guns start shipping. Here's to hoping that doesn't happen, and Sony Computer Entertainment America decides to follow suit.
