Sony denies PS3 overheating problems

 

 

 

Speaking exclusively to our sister site GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Europe has categorically denied reports that the PS3 hardware has suffered any problems due to overheating.

 

The rebuttal follows a report by Macquire Securities analyst David Gibson, who wrote that PS3 units at the Tokyo Game Show were overheating, causing concern over the stability of the console, which in turn caused Sony shares to tumble by 2.75 per cent yesterday.

 

"SCE can categorically deny that there's any problems with PS3 units overheating," said the company in a statement issued to GI.biz.

 

 

"As could be seen on the TGS floor by the tens of thousands of media and public attendees, both the hardware and software worked flawlessly," the statement concludes.

 

Sony has been suffering negative press since the company announced it would be delaying the European launch of the PlayStation 3 until March 2007, due to difficulties in producing a key component of the system.

 

The overheating rumours have also been fuelled by a recent recall of lithium ion batteries manufactured by Sony, which affected technology partners Dell, Toshiba and Apple.

Siren Set for PS3

Sony's scary survival horror series to continue in the next generation.

 

- Sony Computer Entertainment will be bringing the Siren series to the PlayStation 3, according retail reports out of Japan. And... that's all we know at the moment.

 

The staff behind the first two Siren games (yes, there are two in Japan!) has been soliciting staff for next generation work, prompting many to assume that a PlayStation 3 version of the PS2's scariest game series was on the way. Now, it's official, although the game doesn't seem to have a "3" attached to its name just yet.

 

We 100% hope and 50% expect to learn further details later this week.

SCEA's Hirai: Rumble Cut Because Of Cost

Technically feasible? Yes. Cheap? No, no, no.

 

In a video interview with the head of SCEA Kaz Hirai, Kikizo got the man in charge to comment on why exactly Sony opted to drop the rumble functionality on the PS3 controller for the new tilt motion sensors. The primary reasoning behind the decision, as Hirai explains, was money. "The issue... is trying to isolate the vibration feature from the motion sensors," he said. "Is it technically feasible? Absolutely. But the balancing act that you need to do is to be able to present the controller to the consumer at an affordable price." Hirai went on to explain that if Sony had to develop the technology, that would have definitely bumped up the price of the controller "doing the consumer a huge disservice by coming up with a controller that is not affordable."

 

"We felt that ultimately, the vibration feature, which is a feedback feature, as compared to the motion sensing, which is an input functionality," he said. "When you compare the two, we decided that the input device or methodology is a lot more important than feedback, and that has been a strategic decision we've made."

 

The SIXAXIS PS3 controller is retailing for 5000 Yen in Japan ($43), along with the prices of other PS3 accessories.

 

On the coin's other side, is Immersion's somewhat vitriolic response: Rumble is cheap, the company told Next-Gen, saying that adding rumble to the controller wouldn't cost the consumer much at all. The war of words between Sony and Immersion continues, with Immersion's CEO Vic Viegas again asserting that the company could've helped Sony rumble: "[Hirai's] saying that [combining rumble and tilt in a controller] isn't a technical problem any longer, so I'm glad their engineers figured that out -- even though we knew the day after [sony's press release] how to do it."

If only that pesky lawsuit between Sony and the rumble-tech company were settled, eh?

Δεν είναι αυθεντίες, ΑΛΛΑ έχουν δει το παιχνίδι που εσύ έπαιζες 6 μήνες + μετά ( το Pes 5 πχ ) όταν εσύ έπαιζες ακόμα το 4.

 

Για να καταλάβεις τι μαμακία κάνει η Κονάμι, βγάζει Pes4 στο Pc, οκ?

 

Λίγους μόλις μήνες μετά, βγάζει το We8 Liveware Evolution ( γαμάτο παιχνιδάκι ) που δε βγήκε ποτέ στην Ευρώπη, ούτε στο pc απ' όσο ξέρω. ( κάτι σαν Pes 4,5 ας πούμε )

 

Μετά, βγάζει το We9 και 2 μήνες μετά βγήκε το Pes5 !! Δηλ, όλοι οι άλλοι, έπαιζαν 2 γενιές νεότερα παιχνίδια απο τους χρήστες pc και τους ευρωπαίους (!)

 

Και απο τον Μάρτη, εδώ και 8 μήνες δηλαδή, έχει βγάλει και το We10 και τώρα αρχίζουν να μιλάνε για Pc-xbox Κλπ !!

 

Πες μας τώρα 1 λόγο να ασχοληθούμε με το Προβληματικό Pes5 (!). Ότι είχαν φτιάξει λίγο στο We8 Liveware Evolution, το χάλασαν στο 5 και ήρθαν να το ξαναφτιάξουν + να προσθέσουν λίγο σε animation-gameplay και να βγάλουν το We10.

 

Το κράξιμο που χουμε ριξει όλοι στην Κονάμι, είναι γνωστό βέβαια...τώρα..

 

Μακάρι το Pes6 να μην είναι ακριβώς το ίδιο με την έκδοση του Ps2 + βελτιωμένα γραφικά !!...

PAL "don't mind" being last says Sony

 

What would you say to consumers who like Sony and want to buy your products, but perhaps feel that because they're in Europe they're always last in line?

 

European consumers have shown that historically they don't mind that, because they end up buying as many PlayStations, if not more, than the US and Japan. In Europe, it doesn't seem that the release of our platforms after the US and Japan - in the long run - affects how consumers feel.
