GDC London: Epic's Rein - 'Gears Way Ahead of PS3 Launch Titles'

The ever-entertaining Epic Games VP Mark Rein, sassing "Don't take my picture!" at the photo-hungry crowd before the start of his GDC London talk on Unreal Engine 3 and Gears Of War, was bombastic as usual, commenting of the imminent debut of the X360 title: "Sony says the next generation starts when they say so - bullshit!" He also opined that Gears, as a second-gen Xbox 360 title is likely to look better than PS3 launch titles.

 

The Epic VP then took the stage, commenting that Gears Of War ships in around 6 weeks, commenting: "We're trying to counteract all the hype the game has" by keeping a lot of the game features concealed and fresh. He also revealed that Gears Of War itself will take twelve-and-a-half hours to complete (not a recently cited ten hours, he made sure to point out), and that there is "plenty of replayability" after the fact.

 

As Gears Of War ends, Rein explains that the concentration is changing to making the Unreal Engine 3 engine for PlayStation 3 better. He notes: "We have a couple of worried customers" regarding the PlayStation 3 and UE3, who are asking: "How are we going to get it to perform as well as the Xbox 360"? But this is now what Epic is concentrating on, as it moves toward the completion of Unreal Tournament 2007 "some time in 2007."

Remote Play confirmed for PS3 & PSP

 

According to reports, Sony has confirmed that you will be able to use the PS3's WiFi functionality to bring video content to your PSP. However, the relationship doesn't stop there, with gamers being able to use the PSP to control PS3 games as well as view them.

Heavenly Sword Confirmed As Launch PS3 Game

 

UK developer Ninja Theory has confirmed that their Heavenly Sword game will indeed be a launch window game for the Playstation 3. The delay of the console in the UK will not affect the game's progress, nor will the game be delayed. At least as of now.

 

NBA 2k7 Will Support 7 Players Offline On PS3

 

According to a shakycam video of NBA 2k7 on the Playstation 3, it seems the game will support 7 simultaneous players in offline mode. Of course, this will be quite confusing we think, but it is nice to know that some games will support the full controller layout.

- Hardware-accelerated physics specialists AGEIA Technologies, Inc. have announced the availability of its latest AGEIA PhysX SDK v2.6. According to the company, the latest version "dramatically enhances and accelerates the development of cutting edge games with complex physics-based environments that feature real-time dynamic motion and interaction on a massive, persistent scale," and includes new Deformable Objects features and Self-Collision Prevention capabilities to developers of games for Windows, and leading next generation video game platforms, as well as new added support for Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit & Linux environments.

They also put in extra time in the motion capture studios to enhance the realism on the court, so players really had a sense of being in a game situation. In fact, Greg Thomas, the president of Visual Concepts pointed out that as they've been spending more and more time with the hardware, they've started realizing that future game titles for both the 360 and PS3 will have to have different development cycles to fully take advantage of each console's power.

 

Speaking of taking advantage of the PS3's power, the team has been using the computational power of the system to enhance a large number of the standard features that the game is known for. For instance, the cloth physics of jerseys and shorts has been assigned to one SPU on the PS3 instead of multiple cores on the 360 so that it can move more realistically than ever without taking away processing power for the rest of the game.

 

Players will be able to shoot free throws by tilting the controller back and then leaning it forward. While you can do it with minor movements, you can also hold and tilt the controller as if you were actually shooting with a basketball. - see video demonstration

 

Visually, the game has been taken up to a new level, particularly in how the game action is rendered. Not only have the in-game visuals been beefed up thanks to the power of the system, but according to Thomas, the way the PS3 renders pixels gives the game a richer appearance than the 360 version. It looks much more organic and lifelike, and if you thought you were watching a real game on the 360, just wait till you see it on the PS3.
