Sony says it heard of possible PS3 trouble, can't confirm

 

TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Sony Corp. (6758.TO) said Tuesday it heard that its PlayStation 3 on exhibit at last month's Tokyo Game Show might have encountered some trouble, fanning concerns about its crucial next-generation game machine.

 

The Japanese electronics company has already been plagued by difficulties in manufacturing a key component for the PS3, which forced it last month to delay the European launch of the game console by four months, missing the all-important year-end shopping season in one of its major markets.

"We heard that some trouble happened at TGS but haven't identified what happened. Therefore, we don't know exactly if it really happened or not and what the cause was," said a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

Asked if Sony was investigating the issue, he said: "I don't think so." He declined to comment when asked if the PS3s on exhibit at the Tokyo Game Show had to be reset often.

Sony's shares were down 2.7% at Y4,600 at midday, after hitting a low of Y4,580 in earlier trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The spokesman was responding to a report issued Monday by Macquarie analyst David Gibson, who wrote that concerns about possible stability problems in the PlayStation 3 are likely to weigh on Sony's shares in the short term.

"We have heard that at the TGS PS3s had stability problems and had to be reset often. While the reason for this is unknown we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue. We understand that Sony is investigating the issue and has not determined the cause as yet," Gibson wrote.

"We are concerned that such a problem has occurred so close to full production (end-Sept) and is clearly negative news for the company," he wrote.

A spokesman for Sony Corp. said the Japanese company hadn't changed its plans to ship 6 million PS3 machines globally by March 2007.

Gibson wrote he was keeping his "outperform" rating on Sony's stock, saying Macquarie still believes that the company's electronics division is turning around and that "PS3 issues can be addressed in time for the launch."

Playstation concerns cause Sony shares to fall

 

 

Technical problems of the PS3 has been cited as a cause of a 2.75% drop in Sony shares. According to a report by Macquarie Equities the PS3 suffered from overheating problems at the Tokyo Game Show causing the console to operate erratically and need repeated resetting.

 

Sony claim the cause of the problem was the heat generated by the 200 PS3 consoles on display. They also go on to say there is no technical fault with the PS3 and that there should not be a problem for a player at home.

Overheating under such circumstances is a common affliction at trade shows, afflicting not just Sony products but those of its competitors, she said.

 

"It's not a problem with the PlayStation 3 unit itself," Kato said. "For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

PS3 Browser Details

Sony puts system on display in Japan.

 

TGS came and went just last week, but it never dies down in Makuhari! Everyone's favorite convention center is now home to CEATEC Japan, an annual electronics and computer show, which kicked off on 10/3 and will continue until 10/7.

 

While there's usually little overlap between the two events, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are featured at CEATEC this year. The 360 is in the HD-DVD Promotion Group booth, where it's being shown next to Microsoft's upcoming HD-DVD add-on.

 

The PS3 has a slightly bigger presence in the Sony and Blu-Ray Disc Association booths. Sony debuted the system's new remote control device that was announced separately today. Also in the Sony booth was a demo kiosk showing Gran Turismo HD footage. That's right, just footage!

 

Show-goers did have a chance to get some hands-on time with the system, though, as Sony opened up the PS3's interface for all to sample. Most of what was shown at CEATEC was made public at Sony's official PS3 site today (see this story for details). Much of the Cross Media Bar functionality was inaccessible (most notably the game options), but Sony did allow use of the system's web browser.

 

Japan's Impress Watch provided some impressions of browser use. Using the Six Axis controller (that's the PS3 controller's official name, in case you just woke up), you move a cursor around with the left analogue stick and use the right stick to scroll the screen up and down. Circle is for making selections, with L1 and R1 serving as back and forward buttons. Links can be open in a second window, which lines up next to the current window. The windows can be toggled between using L2 and R2. The site reports that, thanks to the PS3's compatibility with high resolution monitors, webpages are easy to look at when browsing on the PS3.

Despite today's public showing and the mention at the official PS3 website, much of the PS3 interface is still a mystery. We expect (or are hopeing for, at least) things to clear up as the system's November release approaches.
