(Dualshock 3) ....

Someone has gone and installed Windows Vista 32 bit on the PS3, the whole process takes a huge amount of time and the end result is that the emulation runs very slow as evidenced by the fact it takes nearly 25 minutes to boot to the start menu.

PS3 Games Using Only 30% of System's Power?

According to the folks at Naughty Dog, it's estimated that Uncharted only taps about 30 to 40 percent of the PS3's total power. If true, that's mighty impressive...

by James Brightman on Tuesday, August 05, 2008

For the last year or so, games on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 have looked fairly comparable in terms of graphics. Sony and certain developers would argue that the PS3 is definitely a far more powerful machine than the 360, capable of producing visuals that easily outpace those generated on the 360, but others would make the case for the 360's development environment.

Naughty Dog, the studio behind one of the PS3's best looking titles to date, Uncharted, is obviously in the former camp. What's interesting, however, is that Naughty Dog believes it's only begun to scratch the surface of what the PS3 is truly capable of. Speaking to "semi-official" Sony blog Three Speech, Richard Lemarchand, Co-Lead Game Designer at Naughty Dog, commented: "...part of the skill of developing for the PlayStation 3 is getting the GPU to farm jobs out to the six SPUs – seeing which SPUs are idling and can take up some of the slack in a frame-to-frame kind of way. That's why we think we're probably only using 30 or 40 per cent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there's this great, untapped potential. All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years."

If games like Uncharted look stunningly good at 30 to 40 percent, imagine how beautiful they'll appear as developers come closer to using 100 percent of the PS3's power.

In other parts of the interview, Lemarchand talks about Uncharted's retro-fitted support of the new PS3 trophy system and he also reveals that "we're quite a way into our next production cycle now," but it's unclear if that next project is a sequel to Uncharted since the game's not yet been announced.

Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, users are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home Beta test community. We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PLAYSTATION Network to determine eligibility for the Beta community. Existing beta testers have automatically qualified to be part of the expanded beta.

Weʼre really excited about this milestone and want our most loyal fans to be a part of the evolution of PlayStation Home.

In Europe, SCEE is also beginning their expanded closed beta, directly targeting consumers who have been most active on PLAYSTATION Network and PLAYSTATION Store. SCEE will be in email contact with their PSN audience very shortly.

Let us know what you think.

Burnout Paradise to Become Downloadable through PlayStation Network

The Year of Paradise is a year-long direct-to-consumer program where Criterion Games regularly releases new game-changing downloadable content that is designed to evolve the game beyond its initial retail release. The first update is available now (August), free of charge through the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Marketplace, and includes three new game modes, new cars and 70 new multi-part challenges, extending the game with hours of new gameplay. The download pack also introduces a live news page where players can track their game progress and find out news on upcoming online multiplayer events. More game-changing downloadable content is coming this Fall for Burnout Paradise, including trophy support and motorcycles free of charge through the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace.

Fiona Sperry, Studio Manager for Criterion Games, said, “Our mission at Criterion is to provide the most entertaining gaming service possible. In order to do that, itʼs key that we have the ability to deliver content to players in ways that work for them – through quick and easy download or via traditional bricks and mortar. For us, the fun is in playing the game with friends and constantly discovering new surprises in the world. Download packs with meaningful new gameplay are the perfect way for us to keep entertaining fans and keep them playing, even months after launch.”

Feel the adrenaline course through your veins as you take to the road for the first time in Paradise City, where the action is all around you. Explore the city, discover events, and look for the best opportunities to crash, jump and pull signature takedowns. In Burnout Paradise youʼre given the keys to the city, but itʼs up to you to earn the keys to the meanest and most dangerous cars on the street, and earn your Burnout licence.

With true open world freedom, seamless 'EasyDrive' online multiplayer, four unique single-player events, and hundreds of online Freeburn challenges, Burnout Paradise thrusts gamers into an incredibly vivid HD world that pushes the limits of the PS3 and Xbox 360. The white knuckle action explodes as players pull up at any stoplight and spin their wheels to jumpstart the action.

Spectacular bone-crushing crashes and an unparalleled sense of speed will always be a hallmark of Burnout games but Burnout Paradise ups the ante with an all new game design that expands the experience into a deeper, ever more immersive driving dream.

Some of the key features that set Burnout Paradise apart include:

True Open World Freedom - The entire city will be available from the outset, giving players the freedom to explore this immersive world known as Paradise City. Experience open world driving Burnout style as the action begins with you, but it doesn't have to end.

EasyDrive Online Social Gaming - See your friends online with the EasyDrive Friends List and connect with them instantly without having to wait or exit your game. Burnout Paradise is revolutionizing the way players jump on and offline, making it as simple and quick as possible.

Single-player Events - Choose from Race, Marked Man, Road Rage, and Stunt by pulling up to the numerous stoplights in the game to initiate the event. The action isn't forced any longer, as players have the freedom to start and even end a challenge at their leisure.

Burnout Paradise will have you feeling every bump, crash, scrape, and collision using Sony's new DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller with rumble feature for the PS3. The EasyDrive online Friends List keeps the action flowing on the PS3, as players get into a challenge with three easy taps of a button. Once the competition heats up, players can grab snapshots as they rip through opponents and collect candid Mugshots of friends and foes alike using the PlayStation Eye. The Xbox 360 version of the game features Mugshots using Xbox LIVE Vision.

Burnout Paradise, rated E10+ by the ESRB and 3+ by PEGI, is currently available worldwide on PS3 and Xbox 360, and will be available for download on PSN this fall for 29,99 USD
