LittleBigPlanet Team Talks DLC, Show New Levels At CES PS3 Preview

lbp_ces_stage.jpg

Media Molecule team members are currently on stage at CES, showing off the "play, create, share" title LittleBigPlanet to conventioneers and business types. The team just showed off a new pre-built level for the first time, one that introduces player death and respawn points to the DIY platformer. One of the new materials, under the "terribles" group, is a steaming hot magma rock, one that kills on contact. Sackboys who've been killed off can return later, courtesy of respawn portals. This adds a bit more of a competitive element to the game, as those still alive can secure unclaimed Fluff. At the end of the level, the LittleBigPlanet player with the most Fluff wins, naturally. Score results are shown on a TV with cute retro styling.

Hints of the first bits of downloadable content came in the form of new backgrounds, some of which have already debuted at CES. In addition to already shown desert and zen garden levels, the eastern Indian background featuring a pre-built Vishnu-like multi-armed god.

Sony and Media Molecule staffers also showed off another pre-built level with a heavy southwestern theme, a sombrero sporting Mexican mechanism that shuffled back and forth between structures. Players had to cooperate to pull the toy, which doubled as a platform necessary to progress, in order to complete the level.

The team also broke out briefly to show off the updated emote system further, with angry, sad, nervous, happy faces and postures, each with three degrees of intensity.

The game is looking very solid, but there wasn't too much on display that hadn't been seen at other events. The "share" portion of the game wasn't available, with Media Molecule recycling the same mock-up video shown previously.

Sony didn't follow up with any other titles, choosing to focus solely on LittleBigPlanet.

LittleBigPlanet confirmed for September

Sony tells CVG autumn release is on the money for the quirky PS3 game

Sony has confirmed with us this morning that LittleBigPlanet will be out in September.

An autumn release date for the quirky PS3 game was hinted at yesterday, when producer Kyle Shubel spoke about the 2008 timeline for the title in a demonstration at CES in Las Vegas.

A LittleBigPlanet demo was expected toward the end of 2007 but failed to materialise. A rep from Sony's UK had no further news on a release date for the demo at this time.

In LittleBigPlanet you start off as a small teddy bear-like creature made from wool, and you use your little avatar to construct in-game objects using materials such as wood and cloth.

With a bit more time however you can construct entire levels that can then be ran through in a side-scrolling platformer style.

More Metal Gear Solid 4 Details

First off, it is the same demo that was played at the 2007 E for All convention last October in Los Angeles, which means that nothing groundbreaking comes, but we can report that the acceptance of the Dual Shock 3 controller works hand in hand with MGS4. Secondly, Konami is not able to confirm if the game will run on 60fps at 1080p. As reported earlier, the game switches from 30fps to 60fps depending on what is going on, on screen. Finally, Konami is not setting MGS4 to a solid release date just yet, but they are giving hint for an announcement coming late February, which is around the time of the Game Developerʼs Conference from February 18th-22nd.

Explosions for sale or rent

Venezuela has a problem with Mercenaries 2: their government is convinced this balls-out-action shooter is pure propaganda for an eventual US invasion. You can see their point: by the end of the game you can expect the virtual version of their country to be charred, broken and burning.

So many games promise truly destructible environments, and so few deliver. This third-person action game's mantra is "If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it." It's a game that hinges entirely on the joy of making things explode. On fire.

It also draws upon the joy of hijacking helicopters in mid-air - grapple up to it from the ground, boot the pilot out of the cockpit, and then unleash hell in your new chopper. In what's promised to be an open world in which you can sell your carnage-based services to the highest bidder, that's just one of your options.

A particularly exciting prospect is the co-op multiplayer: teaming up with a friend to lay utter waste to urban, jungle, tropical and mountainous environments. Expect to offend an entire South American country sometime in the second quarter of 2008.

Joystiq hands-on: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)

dmc4ps3boxart490.jpg

Some other mainstays of the series are back, including ridiculous giant bosses and hilariously clad female supporting characters. The Balrog makes a guest appearance as an early boss and is far easier than Lord of the Rings made him look. Thanks to the combat tutorial at the start of the game, Devil May Cry 4 should be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether you've played the previous games in the series. However, this game presents another example of using a ridiculously overpowered character as a tutorial boss. We're expected to believe that Nero can beat Dante in a fight, and learn the rules of combat as he does so? Wouldn't Dante be the hardest boss ever?

Speaking of features seen in other games, Nero's Gunblade Motorbike Sword takes a little time to master but once you do, it makes getting those SSS combos much easier. Grabbing your enemies and throwing them to the floor using Nero's Devil Arm is also great fun. Fans of Dante's stances from DMC3 will be happy to see them return and become interchangeable in the midst of battle. Capcom has also given Dante a huge arsenal of weapons to play with, including some particularly fun, pink exploding blades. From what we could tell, the difficulty is much less brutal than in the series' previous iteration, though it did get quite tough during the later missions.

New Fallout 3 Developer Diary and Concept Art

OXM writes, "Bethesda has updated its Fallout 3 site with a developer diary from its lead designer."

"Although lead designer, Emil Pagliarulo, doesn't talk about actual development such as stories of office pranks, multiplayer Two Worlds at lunchtime or late nights of work fuelled by crisps and Red Bull, he does talk a lot about the storyline."

"He explains about the Brotherhood Of Steel, who they are and how they're relevant to the Fallout 3 universe. Check out the developer diary for the full breakdown and nice, juicy bits of concept art."
