Unreal Tournament Action Cam v1.0 Released for PS3

 

Fall, creator of the Action Cam mod for Unreal Tournament III on the PC, has cooked up his most wanted mod for the PLAYSTATION 3 version of the game with the new tools Epic release.

 

The new mod however only has one flaw, which is the characters disappearing when they get too close to the screen. Fear not, he plans on fixing it in the next release of the Action Cam. For now, just enjoy! Download the mod here.

1.2m US PS3s sold over Xmas

Sony Computer Entertainment America has revealed it sold over 1.2 million PlayStation 3 units during the holiday period from 23rd November to 31st December, 2007, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

 

In total, sales of the three PlayStation consoles on the market reached 3.9 million units in the US, with both the PlayStation 2 and the PSP out-selling Sony's latest home console.

 

 

"The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008," commented Jack Tretton, president of SCEA.

 

"We are particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the holiday selling season."

 

"The strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray's dominant position as the high-definition medium of choice for games and movies. Consumer are clearly responding to the expanding multimedia capabilities and a great line-up of over 200 games," he added.

 

Sales of the PSP handheld reached 1.4 million during the same time frame, with Sony listing the limited edition Daxter and Star Wars: Battlefront Entertainment packs as highlights.

 

And Sony's PlayStation 2 continued to outperform the PS3, with 1.3 million units sold in what was the machine's eighth Christmas on sale.

 

Last week, Microsoft revealed its latest sales figures for Xbox 360, with over 17.7 million units sold worldwide since launch.

MotorStorm Gets Even Filthier

Two new tracks to download in EU from Thursday.

MotorStorm, PlayStation 3's muck-'em-up, is being treated to an expansion pack this week, with two new tracks available for download on Thursday.

 

The first track is Diamondback Speedway and pits players against the high banking of the natural amphitheatre Yei Bichei. The second, Eagle's Nest, is a tight race set atop precarious cliff-edges.

 

Those with an appetite for some muddy larks should point their consoles in the direction of the PlayStation Store, where the Double Track Pack will be available to download this Thursday,

Sony's Hirai eyes PS3 profit as costs decline

 

Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) gaming chief Kaz Hirai hopes to turn a profit on the PlayStation 3 console business in the entertainment conglomerate's next fiscal year, fuelled in part by falling costs for the parts used to make the device.

 

"We want to get to the positive side of the equation as quickly as possible," Hirai, who is chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, said late on Sunday on the sidelines of a news conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

 

"The next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year that would be a great thing. We are going through the budgets right now. That (profitability) is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for."

 

His comments came after Sony announced stellar holiday sales for the PS3. The company said on Sunday it sold 1.2 million PlayStation 3 video game consoles in North America over the period, two-thirds what it sold in the rest of the year.

 

The Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate currently loses money for each PS3 it sells.

 

Sales of the PS3 have lagged those of Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) Wii consoles due to what analysts say is its lofty price and a dearth of must-have games.

 

Great games, which draw consumers to buy the console, matched with declining component prices will hopefully lead to profitability for the PS3 and the company's gaming division overall, Hirai said.

 

"Component costs are coming down, and the number of components ... we are seeing a reduction," he said. "The 40 gigabyte PlayStation 3 obviously has fewer components (than more powerful models), and uses less power, which means that components required to dissipate heat, for example, can be smaller, so there is some cost reduction there."

 

"So costs are coming down significantly," he added, noting that the decline is in line with what the company had expected.

Sony Online Developing New PSN Titles Using Gamebryo Engine

 

SOE developers chose Gamebryo to produce certain future titles. The first games under development on Gamebryo are based on gameshow IPs and are scheduled to launch prior to the Game Developers® Conference in February 2008.

 

"Our relationship with SOE aligns Emergent with the exploding casual, online games market and further demonstrates the range of leading entertainment properties and platforms that Gamebryo is capable of supporting. We are thrilled that SOE has chosen us as a technology provider for their studio," said Geoffrey Selzer, CEO of Emergent. "Gamebryo gives SOE's studio the flexibility to design a complete range of titles to address the millions of gamers currently active on the network."

 

"Gamebryo gives us a great deal of flexibility in creating downloadable titles for the PlayStation Network," said Shalom Mann, Senior Vice President, SOE. "The codebase provides a solid foundation for our Downloadable Games Framework that allows us to bring a variety of different types of games to the PlayStation Network in a fraction of the time had we coded the base engine ourselves."

 

The PlayStation Network has nearly six-million registered users worldwide and is available via broadband Internet access on the PS3 and the PSP system. In addition to online games, PlayStation Network offers shopping, messaging and Internet browsing features.
