GameSpot Previews Turok: On PS3 "it's practically indistinguishable from the Xbox 360"

ameSpot writes: "Not only did we get to see a lot more of the single-player campaign and to play on previously unseen multiplayer maps, but we were also afforded our first look at the game's co-op and "wargames" modes. We should also mention that this was our first opportunity to see Turok running on the PlayStation 3, and we're pleased to report that it's practically indistinguishable from the Xbox 360 version."

Latest PS3 Firmware 2.10 Update blocks RSX exploit?

Many users are reporting that the latest PS3 Firmware v2.10 may well have cancelled a potential RSX exploit that allowed full GPU access on the PS3.

It is no secret that Sony likes to tackle against any potential hacks, and if this is true it would be a discouragement to further Linux development under full GPU access on the PS3.

As always, only time will tell for sure...

Downloading videos from Stage6

Stage6 is widely known amongst DivX fans as one of the best places to get high quality streaming DivX video. Unfortunately, the site isn't compatible with the PS3 ... or is it?

It is, so long as you're willing to fiddle around with the PS3's web browser a bit. Go to a Stage6 video you're interested in. For example, we've chosen the PS3's recent Universe of Entertainment ad. Edit the URL in your PS3 browser by pressing START.

URL displayed by browser:

http://www.stage6.com/PS3/video/1827927/PLAYSTATION%C2%AE3---Universe-of-Entertainment

To download this DivX file to your DivX-enabled PS3, you're going to have to edit the video as such:

http://video.stage6.com/1827927/.divx

That's it! Press START, and your PS3 will start downloading the DivX file directly to your hard drive. You can do this with any video on Stage6. All you have to do is follow this formula:

http://video.stage6.com/VIDEO-NUMBER/.divx

Any other information is unnecessary! This only takes a few seconds, and you'll have high quality DivX files any time you wish.

ltdsalesnewsonyip1107-correct.jpg

The chart above shows the LTD sales for four of Sony's big new properties, all developed exclusively for the PlayStation 3: Resistance: Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, LAIR, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Together, sales of these titles total just over 1.2 million software units. [Note: The numbers for Resistance: Fall of Man have been updated.]

If Sony were gambling that original first-party software would help sell its system during its inaugural year, it appears to have lost resoundingly.

Even Sony's big sequel to a successful PlayStation 2 franchise, Ratchet & Clank Future, has sold fewer than 150,000 units so far.

Sony's dual strategy of bundling a videogame system with a high-definition movie player could prove flawed as the PlayStation 3 strives to remain relevant. Suppose for a moment that 10% of PlayStation 3 sales have been consumers seeking a quality Blu-Ray video player.

Then those sales will gradually cease to supplement PlayStation 3 hardware sales as cheaper standalone Blu-Ray players drop in price.

And as those Blu-Ray sales are bled off, the PlayStation 3 installed base remains inflated by consumers who are far less likely to purchase videogame software for the system.

To third-party publishers this will appear to be a faltering hardware platform whose users are less likely to purchase their software than the users for a more established system like the Xbox 360.

Moreover, Sony itself must sell licensed software to make up for the loss it takes on every PlayStation 3 it sells.

There are reasons to believe Sony can turn the corner (for example, a strong slate of 2008 software and some improvements in third-party relations), but lower sales of all but the most heavily promoted software makes one wonder – just as with the PSP – what all those consumers are doing with the system once they get them home.

New Folding client for PS3

Sony has released a new version of the Folding@Home client for PlayStation 3, which you can download by clicking on the FAH icon on the XMB. KBAI.

According to the Sony US blog, the new FAH client now has an option to shut itself down after it finishes its current task, or after an amount of time set by you, allowing the console to submit completed data to Stanford University, which runs the project, before turning itself off.

The new version also has the option to listen to background music while you help find out why particular proteins aren't folding - something that has been implicated in Alzheimer's and various cancers - with track-skipping options and other expected features.

Folding@Home might seem like a silly little extra, but it would only seem that way to people who are stupid. Probably. It's a long-running project designed to examine protein-folding and the PS3's bundled software allows console owners to contribute their machine's spare processing power when they're not playing games or trying to make SingStore work.

Sony's contribution has already made a huge impact, according to the FAH project organisers, who claimed in November that the console had helped it become the most powerful distributed computing network ever in the eyes of Guinness World Records.

CVG: MGS4 hands-on - Hideo Kojima waxes lyrical on his proudest invention

Visually, it's impressive, but not staggering. Squint and pop into first-person view, and it's not dissimilar to the Middle East sections in Call Of Duty 4. In fact, playing MGS4 in FPS mode feels initially disappointing, since a part of your brain thinks you're playing Infinity Ward's incredible shooter. Extended play soon erodes comparisons - Metal Gear 4 is way more flexible - and the graphics gently dazzle: the volume of gunfire, explosions, soldiers and smoke in the final showdown with the PMC tank spikes your breath.

It isn't PS3's best-looking game, but the solidity and detail - zoom in and just look at Snake's grizzled face - is confidently reassuring.

Holiday Folklore Expansion

More outfits, Folk and a quest are on the way.

Eric Fong, Folklore Associate Producer, announced on the official PlayStation Blog that a holiday-themed expansion pack will be available this week for download from the PlayStation Network. That may sound quite appealing, but the news gets even better: the pack is free!

Downloading the expansion will get you two new costumes for Ellen and Keats, both of which are intensely spirited to say the least. Keats will also have a new quest to participate in which has been titled "Holy Night Visitor." To top things off, a new Folk can also be collected. Known as "Grab Bag," this rather ferocious gift monster will clearly aid our heroes in battle.

Home Beta Slated for Q1 2008

You won't be decorating your virtual pad until next year.

The last we heard from Sony on Home, the beta was still on track for release late this year. But as we're inching closer to the end of 2007 with no word on a release, it was looking like that promise might not turn out. Today we have confirmation, from President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America Jack Tretton.

In a Mercury News interview, the SCEA head addresses the question of where the beta is. He says "we're looking to do a beta in the first quarter of calendar 2008." Not too far away, as long as the release doesn't slip again. Tretton goes on to point out that the company is "not 100 percent sure on when the full-blown release will be in terms of an actual date."

So, yes, the beta has been delayed, but that was pretty obvious by now, anyway, and at least it hasn't been delayed much.
