Killzone 2 shots 'touched up'

 

Guerrilla Games has come under a bit of fire after admitting that screenshots of the Killzone 2 released last week had been retouched.

 

As Kotaku notes, side by side comparisons of the Games Convention trailer and new screenshots suggest some serious tweaking.

 

 

Guerrilla's Seb Downie protests on the PS3 forum: "They are only the tiniest bit touched up." He admits there was "a little bit of colour-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major. Still very close to reality and it looks better in motion in my opinion."

 

Of course, the knee-jerk reaction is rather negative. After the original Killzone 2 trailer turned out to be "target rendering", the production of retouched screenshots was bound to rub people the wrong way.

 

However, Downie's argument shouldn't be dismissed. As anyone who has ever captured footage or screenshots directly from console hardware, or recorded video or images using shakycam, can attest, colours do need to be corrected because of the often wildly differing settings and characteristics on either side of the hardware interface.

 

You may remember that around the time of the PS3 launch we took some screen-grabs from PS3 review code and they appeared washed out, even drab. When we took the shots the first time, they looked absolutely fine, so we published them, only to discover that when viewed on other screens the result was significantly inferior. Once the colour had been re-balanced, they looked as they should.

 

So, does this mean Killzone 2 looks exactly as it does in the screenshots? Not necessarily. But it doesn't mean Guerrilla was trying to pull a fast one, either, which seems worth pointing out.

 

Killzone 2 is due out during, er...well, that's another matter entirely.

Unreal Tournament 3 Ships for PS3

Shoot first. Mod later.

 

Midway Games has shipped the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 to retailers, the company announced today.

 

Developed by Epic Games, UT3 marks the return of the futuristic multiplayer first-person shooter franchise to consoles. The game was released for PC on Nov. 19, 2007 and will be released on the Xbox 360 at a still-undisclosed date. UT3 on the PS3 is the first Unreal Tournament console game to allow modding

 

"User-created content has always been the remarkable backbone component of the Unreal Tournament series, and we think PlayStation 3 users are in for a huge treat when the mods start to appear," said Epic president Mark Rein in a news release.

First Unreal Tournament 3 Review

Gameplay: 8.5

While it has continually been improved, the gameplay hasnʼt remarkably changed over the years. Long-time fans are essentially playing the same game rebuilt with a new graphics engine. But, do not fret – the gameplay is still whole-heartedly entertaining. For PS3 fans, the large-scale combat is particularly the most intriguing part to experience online.

Graphics: 9.6

Beautiful in both motion and at a standstill, the Unreal Engine 3 provides eye-popping graphics for Unreal Tournament 3. Not having played Uncharted yet, Iʼd have to say this is the best game, in terms of graphics, to be released on the PS3.

Sound: 9.1

The announcer that Epic Games has provided is great to add to the intensity of the battles.

Difficulty: Medium

While the default settings are easy for the single-player campaign, the higher settings tend to be insanely hard.

Concept: 8.7

The combat is insane, but itʼs basically the same game that has continuously been improved since 1998. Though, I will give props where props are due and the style is among the most unique to be released this year.

Multiplayer: 9.7

This is hands-down the best multiplayer game on the PS3 due to the ability create maps, skins and mods for the PS3 version.

Overall: 8.8

With all that said, the main reason I am captivated by UT3 is because how much it differs from shooters currently on the next-generation consoles. Too many shooters are still stuck in World War II or trying to “advance” to modern combat, while not enough are cranking up the speed and providing thrilling action to boot. If you have enjoyed the previous installments, then I have no doubt that Unreal Tournament 3 will be a fine purchase this holiday season.

χμ περιεργο.οταν ειχαν πρωτοβγει οι συνεντευξεις των devs,ειχαν υποσχεθει οτι το ut3 θαταν ξανασχεδιασμενο απο την αρχη,προσφεροντας μια καινουργια εμπειρια σε σχεση με τα προηγουμενα.(δεν μιλησαν για επανασταση).ειχαν βεβαια πει οτι θα ευχαριστουσε τους παλιους φανς,αλλα και θα ηταν καταλληλο και για καποιον που αναζητουσε κατι καινουργιο.

μαλιστα ειχαν δειξει και ποιες τεχνικες χρησιμοποιουσαν για το σχεδιασμο του νεου gameplay.
