IGN: PS3 DiRT looks so good you might crap your pants, smoother than 360

IGN has completed its review on Colin Mcrae DiRT for the PS3 which was released after the Xbox 360. They claim that the title looks so good when you pop it in, that you may even crap your pants. Further on they state that DiRT on the PS3 features better graphics and much of the slowdown found in the 360 version has been eliminated in the PS3 version. Overall they awarded it an 'impressive' score of 8.4/10.

With regards to the PlayStation 3 version of the game, Codemasters has taken the extra time since the Xbox 360 release to tighten up the graphics code a bit, resulting in an overall smoother driving experience. Much of the slowdown found in the 360 game is gone, thankfully. It's also worth nothing though that the game lacks Sixaxis support, so those of you who like steering by waving your controller around in the air will be disappointed. Some racing wheels, notably the Logitech line, are supported however, including full Force Feedback, which is certainly nice.

Japanese PSN cards on sale ... at a price

networkcards.jpg

Most will find purchasing anything off the Japanese PlayStation Store an impossibility. Without a Japanese address and credit card, users are locked out of purchasing anything from the country's virtual store. With many games releasing earlier in Japan, this comes as a disappointing disadvantage to gaijin hardcore.

NCSX is planning on changing that, though. They're offering pre-paid PSN cards for the masses. With these cards, players will be able to buy content off the Japanese store without any qualms. The problem? They're a bit pricey. A 3000 yen card goes for $36.50, a premium of almost $10. The retailer explains: "Our vendors in Japan don't have access to the tickets at wholesale and had to pay retail (from Family Mart, no less) and tacked on their mandatory handling charges to obtain them for us. Think of it as a videogame vigorish that's built into the price."

The orders will be delivered digitally, so customers won't have to wait to get their downloads on.

Hopefully for the foreseeable future. The PSN is finally becoming a proper content delivery system. For Americans, at least ...

European PSN updates for September 6th

It's that time of the week again. No real surprises here, ThreeSpeech pretty much hit the nail on the head a few days ago and called out almost exactly what was coming out on the PSN Store today. The only things they missed were the Gran Turismo 5 and Invasion trailers. Here's the full release list:

The Coyote Revenge Pass gamepack includes:

  • Coyote Revenge - mauled into a completely new experience; more technical, new routes and more skillful rivals to battle against
  • New Tickets - to get the most out of Coyote Revenge try to master these Revenge Weekend tickets; they cover all difficulty stages and completion will earn a nice surprise.
  • 2 New Vehicles - a pair of special Revenge Weekend machines, chosen for your delectation.
  • Eliminator Mode - played online yet? In this brand new online multiplayer mode being last is a REALLY bad idea; if you can't hack the pace, the consequences can be quite explosive ...

Alone in the Dark not delayed for PS3, actually

A lot of reports surfaced the other day about Alone in the Dark getting "indefinitely delayed" for the PS3, while the 360 and PC versions of the game were going to hit their mark. We figured, "nah, not this game too," and waited it out, since there was no rhyme or reason for the delay. As it happens, Atari finally issued a statement saying that no, in fact, the PS3 version of the game is not delayed and will get released alongside the 360 and PC versions of the game as initially planned.

Even so, the now noir-horror title never really had an exact release date except for a "before March 2008" tag slapped somewhere on it. A lot of sites want to believe it'll be out in January of 2008 and we'd like to see that, too. However, since game development has been taking a hell of a lot longer this cycle, we wouldn't be surprised if all the versions of the game waited until March of '08 to come out. Tweaking and optimizing are key this generation and we'd hate to see any version of the game suffer. We'll keep you posted as development continues on this long-standing franchise.

PS3 firmware v1.92 does nothing in EU

Sony has revealed to Eurogamer that the latest PS3 firmware update was completely ineffective in Europe. Well, ineffective is perhaps the wrong word as it implies that it failed to perform as it was meant to. We prefer to think of it as superfluous. Pointless. Moot. It didn't do anything and it was never intended to.

A SCEE spokesperson stated to Eurogamer that "all the changes in the firmware update were for the US and Japan, and actually had no effect for us in Europe." All it did do on our end is prevent us from playing Warhawk. Thanks, Sony!
