Crytek deep into PS3 development, creating "secret technologies"

crysis425.jpg

Crytek, the team behind the upcoming Crysis, is heavily invested in console development. In fact, it appears that Crytek is especially invested in Sony's next-gen platform. "Our PS3 development is going deeper than many people assume right now," studio boss Cevat Yerli told GI.biz.

The team is currently working on a console game, and it appears that the game is being built from the ground up for PS3. "It's a complete departure from Crysis and Far Cry, it's not a first-person shooter," he explained. The game, which is also bound for Xbox 360, won't feature any of the cross-platform issues that have been plaguing sloppier releases. "For that, we're optimising technology, but for another reason, the future in general, there is a dedicated PS3 team."

Crytek is working on additional technologies, specifically for Sony's platform. "The PS3 room is separate because we have some secret technologies being developed there which are not related to CryEngine 2." Obviously, this comes as exciting news -- one just has to take one look at Crysis to see the incredible grasp Crytek has on bleeding edge technology. We can't wait to see what they're cooking up for the PS3.

A handful of The Last Remnant screenshots

lastremnant34.jpg

A handful of new screens and a few pieces of artwork for upcoming Square Enix title The Last Remnant have been upped over at RPGamer, courtesy of Japanese site gpara. With the credits out of the way, let's talk about the screenshots. We've seen a couple of these before, but for the most part, they're fairly new to us. Many are screengrabs from the opening cinema and we're not complaining about that -- they look cool.

The one screenshot we slapped up here, to our knowledge, is fairly new. We thought the brunt of this game involved gigantic battles of one army versus another and that's still true, but the screen above shows the main character about to drive his blade into what looks like a creepy critter from another dimension. Definitely makes our imaginations start to wander -- what else is in store for us with this game? We see, too, that a giant creature gets summoned once your morale is high enough. Instead of speculating over these screens, we guess we'll just wait until more news surfaces over the next couple of months.

IGN UK reviews "Sevenly Sword"

heavenly_seven.gif

The NeoGAF forums exploded in a fury of wild emotions at IGN UK's recent review of the much anticipated Heavenly Sword. The critics at IGN UK have much to praise about the game's visual presentation, noting its stellar graphics: "Everything from the beautifully designed, slickly animated characters to those magnificent, omnipresent sweeping vistas is a glory to behold."

But the review goes downhill from there. The combat system is called "tiresome and, to be blunt, incredibly boring." The story goes through a "hopelessly hackneyed, melodramatic script."

IGN UK is known for its highly critical reviews. However, PS3 fans must feel like Nariko (above) when one of the first reviews of such a heavily promoted game gets bashed so strongly. Hopefully, future reviews will show the game in a more favorable light, considering how crucial having a AAA title in the PS3 library is.

Kojima implies music customization in MGS4

hideo_kojima_585.jpg

At Leipzig's Konami booth, Hideo Kojima made a little presentation and hinted at a couple of interesting things he's been tossing around in his mind for Metal Gear Solid 4. After the big trailer finally played (it had trouble the other day due to some technical errors), a rabid fan asked Kojima about the opening and closing tracks for the game. Kojima, not quite sure what the person was asking, shot out a tease answer anyway, "I almost slipped, but there might be a special feature where maybe you can play your own favorite tunes."

Now, we're about 85% sure that he meant an option to play all the tracks from the game would be unlockable, but he did say our own favorite tunes. Since Kojima has a lot of fun making his games, who's to say Snake won't come across an MP3 Player on his journey that just so happens to be full of your favorite songs? Snake can rock out while hiding in a barrel, we guess. What do you guys think? Misinterpretation, or a hint at things to come?

Boss characters invade new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer

mgsboss425.jpg

[Update: New video has been added!]

Wait ... haven't we seen this trailer before? Yes, the opening moments of this Leipzig-edition Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer starts exactly the same as the previous trailer. But just wait. Your patience will be rewarded ... with bosses. Giant metallic tentacled beasts roar as they take down opposing forces with ease. What's that chill we feel? Could it be fear ... or uncontrollable excitement?

Watch the trailer after the cut.
