Sony quiet on Heavenly date

Sony has distanced itself from reports that Heavenly Sword has been confirmed for release on 14th September.

Retailers and some press reports have pegged that date for the game, but a spokesperson for the company told us this morning that an announcement had yet to be made.

Not that that's to say it won't come out on that day. Indeed, SCEE currently believes the Ninja Theory title will be released that month. They just don't want anybody getting ahead of themselves.

Unless, of course, you're referring to "playing the demo", which came out on PlayStation Network last Thursday. It's whipped up a frenzy of discussion as to its merits, which we'll be contributing to this afternoon with our own demo impressions.

Is it all it's cracked up to be? Or not? Or is that question even relevant? You decide. Or rather, we decide, then you shout at us for venturing an opinion. Woo!

Rockstar doing PS3-exclusive

Rockstar is crafting a brand new franchise exclusively for PlayStation 3.

That's the word from Sony America's director of third party relations, Michael Shorrock, who told Sony's US blog that the game was "not LA Noire," in case anybody tried to put two and two together, "but something all-new".

"Everyone knows to have success in this business you need to look ahead, identifying the talent and titles that are going to give consumers new kinds of gaming experiences that help set the bar for the rest of the industry.

"Rockstar has a heritage for doing just that. We have had incredible success with the GTA franchise and are happy to continue to offer those titles on our platforms, and even more excited about what's to come from the current and future relationship between our companies.

"Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that," Shorrock declared.

Right now they're not saying anything about it, but promised to "share more info as soon as we can".

Rockstar titles that have debuted on Sony formats:

* Bully/Canis Canem Edit

* Grand Theft Auto III

* Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

* Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

* Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

* Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

* Manhunt

* Midnight Club

* Smuggler's Run

* Smuggler's Run: Hostile Territory

* The Warriors

Lair Dev: Give the Motion Controls a Chance

Matthias Worch, Game Designer/Technical Art Director at Factor 5, gives his thoughts of finally finishing development on Lair and the positive and negative reviews it has received thus far:

"I'm aware of the reviews, of course. Some are very positive, some are not. The common complaint in those bad reviews seem to be the controls - putting the dragon steering on the motion-sensitive SIXAXIS controller doesn't sit well with some of the experienced gamers. First of all: try it out yourself, give it a chance!

And if you want my side of the story, I will share a simple anecdote: Victoria's family, lead by my 83-year old grandfather in law was able to pick up Lair in less than 5 minutes, fly around with the dragon and play the first mission of the game. That experience right there beats anything that the reviewers can say.

I enjoyed the experience and have tons of ideas on what to do next. In other words, I have already moved on to the next project... :)

P.S.: Hope you like the new vegetation in the final build :) "

The Sony PlayStation 3 's IBM-built Cell processor infringes a 1991 hardware patent and all existing units should be impounded and destroyed. That's according to a complaint filed against Sony which alleges that the PS3 Cell processor infringes US patent number 5,056,000.

If the complaint is upheld, Sony could amazingly be forced to destroy all its Cell processors and to redesign the PlayStation 3 from the ground up.

The lawsuit was filed by US company Parallel Processing which says its patent, "Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory" was issued in October of 1991. The patent explains how new processor architecture could break a program "into smaller concurrent processes running in different parallel processors," and then resynchronize them. This would make processing times much quicker.

"On information and belief, Defendant Sony Corporation of America has infringed and continues to infringe on the '000 Patent by making, using, importing, offering for sale and/or selling products among other things, covered by one or more claims of the '000 Patent, including, but not limited to, Sony Playstation 3," states Parallel Processing in the lawsuit.

PS3 in more hot water

It says that Sony's infringement of its patent has caused it irreparable harm and monetary damage.

Parallel Processing wants all PlayStation 3 consoles which use the Cell processor (that would be all of them) to be impounded and destroyed. It also wants Sony to say sorry, and to reimburse all the money it claims to have lost.

Of course, it's extremely unlikely that Sony will be forced to do any of those things, but it's certainly something to keep an eye on.

1000 cars lined up for GT 5, but just 340 available on disc

Internet reports are suggesting that Sony has confirmed a massive 1000 cars are in the pipeline for Gran Turismo 5 but only 340 of those will be playable from the Blu-ray disc. The rest of the content will be made available via the Playstation Network, although it remains unclear whether gamers will have to pay for the rest of the cars. One rumor is floating around that the game title may be introduced to the market at a lower than usual price with prices being charged for high amounts of downloadable content.

Evolution of Heavenly Sword from Xbox1 to PS3

[gt]89494[/gt]

Did you know that Heavenly Sword was originally an exclusive to the original Xbox? All the way back in 2003, Just Add Monsters (later to turn into Ninja Theory) released an E3 video of the title showing off some fairly significant design differences to what we're familiar with. For example, Nariko didn't have red, freakishly long hair -- instead having a more subdued short black haircut. The game itself also was clearly modeled closely after the Crouching Tiger style of movies, with a strong Chinese influence and wire-work combat moves. Also the life-draining Heavenly Sword looked pretty bland and crappy, not nearly as stylized and slick as it looks now.

At the same time, certain traits have stuck with it. Combat looks to still be very similar and the overall feel of the game doesn't appear to have changed much in the last four years. Check out the video above to see the evolution of Heavenly Sword as it's switched platforms and generations, it's interesting stuff.
