PS3 60 Gig Phase-Out ʽFalseʼ Says SCEA

SCEA has denied 'inaccurate' reports that its $100 price cut on the 60Gig PS3 is simply a move to clear stock before offering solely the higher priced 80Gig version.

 

A spokesperson for Sony in the US told Next-Gen, “"As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."

 

Officials at Sony Computer entertainment Europe – including president David Reeves – had said that the US price would still be $599 because that would be the only model on offer once 60Gig stocks ran out. If true, this would have rendered the $100 price cut a virtually pointless gesture, meaning that PS3 had not been cut in price, but was simply being offered with extra memory and a bundled game.

 

SCEA has reacted with puzzlement to the European perspective, suggesting that there may have been an incorrect interpretation. The spokesperson said, “Those quotes [published by a UK-based game industry website] from David Reeves are not accurate. He said that if they had lowered the price in Europe, that territory would have run out of their current inventory by the end of July.”

 

Previously, a senior PR at Sony in London had backed Reeves statement, confirming that he had been talking about the US market, though the PR later distanced London from the remarks, telling Next-Gen, “I believe that is the plan, but SCEA has not formally made an announcement on any timeframe. As it affects the US you should confirm with SCEA.
”

 

 

SCEA subsequently denied the story entirely. However, questions will now be raised about the company's long term plans for the 60Gig version and for its $599 / $499 pricing strategy.

E3 07: Sony: No PS3 price cut or 80GB PS3 for PAL territories

The electronics giant reveals Europeans and Aussies won't be getting a price cut or the 80GB model; new 'starter pack' bundle to be made available instead.

 

Sony announced on Monday that it would be cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in North America to $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, and that the 80GB version of the console, originally announced to be coming to Korea only, would also be making its way to North American soil in August. However, the company refused to say whether or not price cuts and the 80GB machine would also be coming to other regions, stating simply that, "This is a North American announcement only." However, a Sony Europe spokesperson said that an announcement "following on from the SCEA one" would be coming later in the week.

 

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves confirmed in a press conference that the price cut would only be for North Americans, and that the console would definitely not be getting a price cut from the current £425/599 euro price (approx $850). Aussies are getting a similar deal--there will be no price drop from the current price of A$999. Another blow was dealt to European and Aussie gamers with the news that the souped-up 80GB version would also not be coming to the regions.

 

Instead, a new bundle called the "value pack" will be put on sale for the same price at which the stand-alone console was previously available, which will include a 60GB PS3, two controllers, and two games--Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm. This will be available for the usual price in all the regions, although the games would vary from region to region.

 

It's not all bad news--the new PlayStation Portable will be coming to Europe at the beginning of September in black, silver, and white "initially."

 

The new bundle will be available immediately in SCEE territories, and will be rolled out in all other territories by August 1. David Reeves commented: "Why are we doing this? We believe added value works in the PAL territories."

 

The Sony exec also hinted the company would be revealing three new features and services for the PlayStation Portable at the Leipzig Games Convention that would be exclusive for Europe, and that there would be "something really special" for the PS3, as well as more PSP colors.

Cell = 4-5 times faster than 2xQUAD CPU single percision, about 1.5 x faster @ Dp

 

Ιt is offically benchmarked that the following comparison has been made for 2xWoodcrest quad and Dual Blade Cell.

 

The results where:

 

IBM just published a paper about a financial app on Cell, their end result was a Dual Cell blade beating a dual Xeon (Woodcrest, quad core) by 11X on single precision, 3X on double precision.

Just wanted to add this quote to see the impact of this test:

 

What its essentially saying is that a single SPU is 50% faster than a 3Ghz Core2 at DP FLOPS despite the fact that the Core 2 has about 4-5x higher theoretical peak and a similar transistor count advantage. Sounds a bit ludicrous to me.

Just goes to show that Cell = can get to its theoretical peak, X86 is lucky to get even half its theoretical peak.

 

Ok now what the hell has this to do with the Cell and the PS3 its a blade comparison you idiot Terra? (you may very well post, but I am prempting you ahah!)

 

Ok the blade is exactly the same as your Cell in your PS3 except that its 1xCell instead of 2xCell and your PS3 Cell also has one redundant SPU and one locked for the OS.

 

Sooooo taking in mind that single percision is the most important we will look at this first.

 

This means that optimised code for the Cell PS3 > Optimised code for 2xquad CPU by about 4 or 5 single percision.

 

If you half 11, you get about 5 maybe 6, now take off the (2) SPU's and your down to about 4-5 probably closer to 4.

 

So your Cell processor for optimised code (including games) will still be better than optimised code for 2xQuad set up.

However most games are not optimised for a particular PC CPU's due to the fact that games need to be compatible on previous cores i.e. from single core, double core, to quad etc. This means that while first party game and physics will allways be optimised for the PS3 (especally later on in life cycle) your PC cannot do the same. Meaning that the 4x greater will become maginatudes greater (twice, three times the amount????).

 

Most suprising at all but the least relevant if we follow my logic above even in double percision 1 Cell is about the same or `1.5 times faster than a 2xQuad core.

 

THUS CELL PS3 = AT LEAST 4x speed in single percision over 2xQuads and with no optimisation (to the same degree as Cell anyway) the gap will be even more apparant.

 

That means your probably looking at something like 4xQuad to 6xQuad to equal the speed that Cell is capable of processing games.

 

Which finally means that Cell is going to be allot stronger than your average PC for the next couple of years at least!!!

και μιας και λεγαμε χτες για την αποκλειστικοτητα του UT,

o mark rain δεν αναφερει την φραση "fiscal year" (οικονομικο ετος) οταν αναφερεται στο ποσο console exclusive ειναι το UT3.

σε περιπτωση που δεν υπαρχει γραπτη συμφωνια για exclusive στο fiscal year, τοτε το UT3 θα ειναι console exclusive μεχρι και τον δεκεμβριο,

ενω αν η συμφωνια ειναι για το οικ. ετος, τοτε στο 360 παει απο μαρτη.

παντως η λεξη fiscal δεν εχει αναφερθει μεχρι στιγμης ουτε απο την sony στην επισημη παρουσιαση του παιχνιδιου, ουτε απο καποιον της epic μεχρι στιγμης.

STORMWATCH εισαι εντελως μα εντελως λαθος, φιλαρακακι μου εχει ενα συστημα το οποιο και 100 ατομα απο εδω μεσα να ενωσεται τα κουτια σας δεν προκειται ουτε στο 1% να τον ακουμπισετε, μιλαμε οτι το Pc του κοστιζει γυρω συα 6000 ευρω....απλα θα το πω οποιoς ξερει ξερει, 2 * 8800 ULTRA SLI, 4 GB MNHMES SLI EDITION, QUAD CORE DORE 2.93., τωρα τα αλλα δεν χρειαζετια να στα ανφερω γιατι καταλαβαινεις σε τι επιπεδο κυμαινονται, μον ο το κουτι του κανει 500 ευρω ειναι Lian-li....Tεσπα το παλικαρακι που λες εχει και ps3 και 360, kai ti μου λεει οτι προτιμαει να παιξει ps3 , kai 360 παρα να παιξει στο Pc, Το pc to εφτιαξε για εν παιχνιδι και για φαντασου για πιο μιλαμε, εεε πιο αλλο απο το CRYSIS...Το Pc κατα τα δικα του γουστα εχει μεινει πισω στο gaming ....Καναμε συγκριση παιχνιδιων στο 360, ps3, super pc , και σε πολλα παιχνιδια τα βρικαμε καλυτερα στις κονσολες....Ας πουμε, σε γραφικα καναμε συγκριση το oblivion ps3, 360, super pc, καλα την εμδοση του 360 την αφινω ασχολοιαστει, τωρα οσο γιατι ps3 και super pc υπηρχαν σημεια που το ps3 υπερτερουσε απο το super pc, σε γραφικα εννοω παντα, αλλα το pc toy φιλου μου υπερτερουσε σε ανλυση αφου το 1680*1050, με 8* aa, kai 16* af, kai σε σταθεροτητα του φραμε rate....Kai επισης το cALL OF JUAREZ exei καλυτερους shaders στο 360 apo oti sto pc,....
