Sony Responds to Euro PS3 Delay

Sony UK "extremely disappointed at news", while Kutaragi doubts any "serious damage" to PS3 business.

- Both Sony's UK and Japanese arms have responded to this morning's news that the company has delayed the European launch of its PS3 console from November this year to March 2007.

News of the delay broke at an official Sony press conference in Japan, where Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi revealed that production of the Blu-Ray laser diode - an integral part of PS3 - would be delayed by around one month. The knock-on effect to the console's mass-production was cited as the reason for the change to PS3's European release.

Kutaragi added, "I would like to apologise for those people in Europe who had high expectations for Playstion 3 consoles, as well as for software and device makers that we had to delay the launch for Europe." However, he was keen to reassure that, "Altogether, I do not think this time delay will cause serious damage to our PS3 business".

Over in Europe, Sony UK's senior vice president and managing director, Ray Maguire, expressed disappointment at the news, noting, "We [...] can truly empathise with everyone who was looking forward to PS3's imminent release." However, Maguire assured European gamers that Sony will "be working tirelessly to ensure that the March 2007 launch, is the biggest and best in the company's history."

PS3's delay is already having significant ramifications, with Sony now forced to shelve its £40 million TV-led advertising campaign, previously scheduled to run throughout the Christmas period. According to The Guardian newspaper, the European and Australian PS3 campaigns will now be postponed until 2007, with Alan Duncan, SCEE's UK marketing director, noting all marketing communications plans are currently "under review".

Sony's cinema campaign, featuring six 'stories' about the PS3, which launched online yesterday, will also be affected, possibly being aired at a later date.

Lair to Support Tilt Controls

Plus, ground combat confirmed!

Warhawk is no longer alone in its support of the new functionality built into Sony's PlayStation 3 controller. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the kids over at Factor 5 are working on making Lair compatible with the controller as well. The controller's tilt-sensors will be used to directly control your dragon, the magazine reports, without going into specifics.

Famitsu also reveals that Lair will feature, in addition to intense air battles, ground-based combat. While details haven't been revealed, the combat reportedly looks like Square Enix's Drakengard, with hundreds of soldiers fighting on the ground. It's unclear if you dismount your dragon for the ground battles as in the Square Enix title, or if you remain aboard your dragon and take out your enemies with close-range fire.

Lair is expected to be one of the big PS3 titles at the Tokyo Game Show, so all the confusion should be cleared up in just a couple of weeks.

UK Industry Reacts to Delay

PS3 delay sparks mixed reaction from industry figures.

News of PlayStation 3's Euro launch delay has been greeted by mixed reactions from key figures from the videogames industry, with many unsurprised by the announcement. "I don't think it's unexpected but I must admit I'm disappointed," said Jon Murphy, marketing manager for Konami UK. "The people who will lose out most are the European consumers, who will again have to wait for months after the US and Japan to get the latest console. Microsoft managed a global launch and the same is expected with the Wii so it's a shame that Sony will not manage to do the same."

A spokesperson for high street retailer GAME was also less than surprised by the delay: "We operate in a technology industry where unfortunately product does get delayed - that's just a fact of the market we're in,", they said, before adding, "However, we were never anticipating a substantial number of PS3 consoles for the UK launch in the first place."

In fact many companies perceive the delay as a positive move, believing the slip means more units will be available for Europe come March plus they'll have more time to fine-tune their titles for the PAL market.

Electronic Arts was also upbeat about the delay, with Simon Smith-Wright, UK Head of PR, saying, "EA will have a great portfolio of games ready when the console arrives in Europe and we're looking forward to bringing our PS3 line up to consumers in the region this March."

Whether you think the delay is a good or bad thing - and let's be realistic, most of us are disappointed at the announcement - one thing's for sure, come November there will be a lot of unhappy gamers who, in the absence of PS3, may well be tempted to invest in an Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. "The delay is certainly playing into Microsoft's hands," said Konami's Jon Murphy. "The 360 will be able to get a much stronger grip over Europe which, compared to Japan and the US, is a much more open market. I don't think Microsoft has won the next-gen war by any means but Sony has made it much, much harder for itself."

He continued: "By the time PS3 comes out in Europe there will already be two very established next-gen consoles: the Xbox 360 as a serious games-playing machine and the Wii as a great-value, family-friendly console, so it'll be interesting to see where the PS3 fits into that."

While IGN UK has no doubt the PlayStation 3 will be a success when it eventually hits the shelves, there's no escaping the disappointment that Sony didn't manage a global launch - a fact Neil Thompson, UK Director of Home and Entertainment at Microsoft, was quick to point out: "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console. Europe remains a priority for us and that is why gamers have been able to experience Xbox 360 from day one."

US PS3 launch to eclipse 360's

Sony's communications men have inevitably been out and about trying to put a positive spin on yesterday's announcements about PS3.

Just in case you missed it (ha!), the console's been delayed until March 2007 in Europe, the worldwide launch now only covers Japan and North America, and there are only 500,000 units to spread across both - with the US getting the (relatively) vast majority.

That wasn't enough to deflect senior corporate comms man Dave Karraker from his purpose however, as he told IGN that he was quite chuffed with the proposed US launch. "The North American number is just below what we had available at launch for PS2 and is higher than what Microsoft had for Xbox 360," he explained.

"More importantly, in my mind, is that we will have 1 to 1.2 million units available by December 31 in North America. This is more than double what Xbox 360 sold through during the same period (TRST data) and should assure there aren't significant stock dips at retail."

Providing of course you ignore the fact that Microsoft was off selling around half a million 360s in Europe during the same period, Dave. No need to rub in the fact that we're being shelved in favour of beefing up the US numbers.

To be fair, Dave's "confident in our 6 million global projection by the end of our fiscal year," i.e. the end of March 2007. But then Microsoft's confident of hitting 10 million by the end of this calendar year.

Where are the 1080p PS3 Games?

It's the Blu-Ray difference, right?

Part of the lure to Sony's Blu-Ray disc format is its expanded storage size, that size should, in theory allow gamers to play games at higher resolutions -- like 1080p (the resolution Microsoft said didn't matter, remember?). However, at this point in time, Kikizo reports that there are no games actually running in 1080p on Sony's PS3. The Gran Turismo HD demo from E3 was running in 1080p, but no currently announced software for the system is running at that resolution. Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man is reportedly supporting 720p and 1080i resolutions, but no 1080p. In light of other grim news for Sony, it feels a bit like a pile-on against the Japanese electronics company. Lucky for Sony, the Tokyo Game Show (and Sony's big shot at redemption) is rapidly approaching.

Representatives from Sony told us they were hoping to have Resistance: Fall of Man and NBA 07 running in 1080p for the PS3 -- but that they wouldn't know for sure until the games go gold.

Armored Core Misses Launch

Latest mech title from From Software to hit Japan in December.

Not that it was announced as a launch title or anything, but the new issue of Famitsu reveals that Armored Core 4 won't be making it out in time for the PS3's mid-November launch. The magazine lists the From Software mech title as being set for Japanese release in December.

Currently, the PS3 has two games set for November release in Japan: Fatal Inertia and Mahjong Taikai IV, both from Koei. Other launch window titles are expected to come to light in the coming weeks.

Daves Karraker Interview

The announcement by Sony of a dramatic reduction in PS3s from the initial 2 million console mark to a scant 500,000 across both Japan and North America rocked the Internet today. European gamers were perhaps the most affected, as the launch of the most powerful console ever made was pushed back to March of 2007. The reason for the substantial drop in launch units was attributed to difficulties with the manufacturing of the blue laser diode, which is a key component to the console.

While rumors flew on message boards that this was the death knell of Sony, other rumors about the future of Blu-Ray and the potential skyrocket in prices for systems (thanks to the decrease in available systems) on Ebay ran rampant. We were lucky to have Dave Karraker, the Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Sony Computer Entertainment America, provide answers to some of the most pressing questions surrounding the reduced number of systems.

IGN: Despite the fact that you're sticking to the "six million units by the end of the fiscal year", there have been reports that only 400,000 units will be available in North America on November 17th and 100,000 units in Japan. Are these reports true?

Dave Karraker: At a media meeting this morning in Japan, Ken Kutaragi confirmed that there would be 400,000 units at launch for North America and 100,000 units in Japan. The North American number is just below what we had available at launch for PS2 and is higher than what Microsoft had for Xbox 360. More importantly, in my mind, is that we will have 1 to 1.2 million units available by December 31 in North America. This is more than double what Xbox 360 sold through during the same period (TRST data) and should assure there aren't significant stock dips at retail.

IGN: What makes you so sure you're still going to be able to deliver 6 million units worldwide by the end of the fiscal year?

Karraker: The main contributing factor to the delay in the launch in the SCEE territories was the lack of sufficient supplies of the blue laser diode. As we move along, month over month, we will see increased efficiencies in the production of these key components, thus increasing supply. We are confident in our 6 million global projection by the end of our fiscal year.

IGN: What caused the delay? Consumer Blu-ray players are already available nationwide.

Karraker: Consumer Blu-Ray players are available nationwide, but not in the quantities we are producing the PS3.

IGN: Will the impending shortage be a detriment to the system or will it bolster its prestige in the long run?

Karraker: Ken Kutaragi was very apologetic this morning to all of our customers, consumers and third parties in the SCEE territories that will be affected by the delay, so I would say it is not something we would view as a bolster to our image. However, we do feel confident that as the units are made available in each given territory, we will have no problem selling through our entire inventory.

IGN: Do you think this is going to change the public's perception of Sony and the PlayStation 3 seeing that the public is already skeptical about the system due to its price and other factors?

Karraker: What Sony is aiming to achieve with the launch of the PS3 is both evolutionary and revolutionary. Sony has some very aggressive goals for the system in terms of performance. Any time you push the envelope as far as we are pushing it, there are risks. However, at the end of the day, when people see how advanced this system is, the snags we may have encountered along the way, will quickly fade into the past.

IGN: Will the European launch see some sort of official launch bundle or pack-in to strengthen its later release?

Karraker: No announcement has been made regarding this.

IGN: Being as Sony is betting on the PlayStation 3 to fully launch the Blu-ray format, will this affect its future? Will it bolster HD-DVD's market share?

Karraker: Even with the delay of the launch of PS3 in the SCEE territories, we will have a larger installed base (through PS3) than the original DVD format had at launch. The PS3 will have a tremendous impact on the advancement of the Blu-Ray format.

IGN: Thanks for your time, Dave.
