New MGS4 demonstration imminent.

Sounds like good old times. Kojima Productions is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Metal Gear with its upcoming release of the Metal Gear Solid Collection, as well as a Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Party on July 24th in Japan. A new demonstration of Metal Gear Solid 4 using actual PS3 hardware will be shown at the party, so looks like it's almost certain we will see something new on the game very soon.

Fracture details explode forth from the ground

939322_20070703_embed002.jpg

LucasArts is making a game called Fracture. We've covered it once or twice before. We're really excited about it. Taking that into consideration, when we read a new preview of the title, our excitement grew even more because the terrain deformation mechanic is starting to make more sense to us. We'll explain how it works without going into all the back story -- read that if you want. What we will tell you is the visuals look sharper and resolutions higher than 720p are being considered.

You can carry two weapons at a time, along with four types of grenades. Each weapon has a primary (shooting) feature and a secondary. The secondary features primarily (get it?) deal with terrain deformation -- the machine gun will chip away at the ground, making a staircase on a steep cliff. The shotgun bullets bounce off walls and the rocket launcher creates a subterranean torpedo. Another weapon serves as a type of vacuum, sucking up dirt and debris into a gigantic ball, then rolling it into enemies for an eventual explosion. The grenades serve different purposes as well, mostly for terrain deformation. They're really cool sounding, but that's for you to read up on. Look for the game in early 2008 as well as more coverage over E3!

Fatal Inertia PS3 coming in '08

Koei's Fatal Inertia is one of the lesser-hyped games from E3 2006 that really caught SPOnGʼs eye when we attended a behind-closed-doors demo of it last year. A mish-mash of WipEout-style futuristic racing, Mario Kart power-ups and Katamari Damacy collect-and-grow-a-thon, if you can get your head around that as a concept!

Fatal Inertia is the debut title from KOEI's Toronto-based studio, led by producer Takazumi Tomoike, best known for his work on the awesome Dynasty Warriors series.

Strange then (and deeply ironic, considering the title!) that the PS3 version of Fatal Inertia has now been delayed indefinitely due to “middleware issues”.

SPOnG spoke with Koeiʼs PR rep in the UK this morning who assured us that Fatal Inertia was still in development for PS3 and “definitely would not be canned” as a number of reports have already suggested earlier today.

Lead Game Designer Michael Bond says of Fatal Inertia, "By designing Fatal Inertia's gameplay around a physics engine it not only allowed us to create a truly different driving model, but it also helped us create a set of dynamic weapons with multiple tactical applications… We've based many of the game's weapons on straightforward physical principles, and by doing so we're giving players the freedom to come up with their own creative ways of using them- ways that even we are still discovering."

Fatal Inertia will hit Xbox 360s across Europe this September and PS3 “sometime in 2008.”

UPDATE: Sixaxis Rumble Plot Thickens

UPDATE: Brice from PlayStation Magazine France just dropped us a line to let us know that the technology in question comes from a feature they ran with rumble-makers Immersion. Just Immersion, not Sony. So while it is indeed possible any updated Sixaxis would contain such technology, it remains speculation for now.

The Sixaxis, it's not nailed down. Far from it. PlayStation Magazine France mag are reporting a rumour that not only will we be seeing a rumbling version of the control pad appearing later this year, but that the rumbling will be location-sensitive, with feedback coming not just from a single internal motor but from several different locations on the pad at different intervals, settings and speeds (ie triggers, thumbsticks, etc). If you're worried this will blow out the cost of the controller, they also report that the technology is less expensive to build than the tech used in the Dualshock. Oh, and that it'll be compatible with PS2 games via a PS3 firmware update. If (IF!) this all turns out to be fo' reals, jolly good show, Sony.

New MGS4 trailer debuting at E3, Sony and Konami keynotes

mgs4_425px_snake.jpg

The Kojima Report podcast -- one of our favorite 'casts by the by -- has confirmed the not terribly surprising news that a new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer will debut during the Sony and Konami E3 keynotes next week. Since Sony's keynote is chronologically first -- next Wednesday at 2:30pm Pacific -- we'll just count down the minutes until then. About 7-1/2 minutes in, host Ryan Payton starts talking about the "brand-new" trailer which will, for the first time, be available in English.

Of course, Konami also showed off new trailers for Snake's latest adventure at last year's E3 and TGS expos (both conveniently embedded after the break) so we're not entirely shocked. We suppose the lack of a Microsoft conference screening shouldn't come as a surprise either ... but we're still not convinced.
