E3 teaser front and center on the PlayStation Store

e3.jpg

For E3 this year, Microsoft is offering a ton of content related to the show for download over their XBL service. It's a great way for us mere mortals to taste a bit of the excitement of E3 and maybe even try out a couple of the games. Last year it was a lot of fun, and people were wondering if Sony was going to step up to the plate with their own E3 offering. Unlike Microsoft, they've been rather quiet about their plans -- leading a lot of people to speculate that it was going to be yet another sparce content showing from Sony. But things may not be as they look, as just earlier today Sony updated their PlayStation Store front with an interesting teaser image (seen above). Sony has never used the main Store Top frame to advertise anything that wasn't directly related to the PlayStation Store some how, so this is an interesting development.

Hopefully this isn't just a tease and actually leads to a solid E3 content push from Sony. Toss in a Lair demo and a Killzone 2 video and that would make a whole lotta people happy little campers.

Alone in the Dark: the definitive horror experience

alone_in_the_dark-xbox_360-screen11.jpg

You know that feeling you get when your gut just tells you something is going to be good? It's usually wrong in the end, but until you know for sure it's just a great means to power the hype train? We've got that feeling about Alone in the Dark. Because they scrapped using a subtitle or a numerical indicator, it tells us they've re-imagined the franchise and will take the game down a new, hopefully scary, path. An interview with producer Noir Polloni explains more, after the jump.

We're going to list the neat features, because writing a narrative on each one would make us go crazy and force you to read a lot more than necessary! Let's begin, shall we?

  • Survival is tantamount -- use what's around you to survive. Polloni likens this experience to Die Hard and everybody's badass, John McClane.
  • The game will take narrative cues from shows like 24, Lost, and Prison Break. Expect cliffhangers and revelations during play to keep you wanting more.
  • The game is part of the franchise, though. The Edward Carnby you play in this title is the very same Carnby from the first Alone in the Dark. Yep, the 1920's guy. How'd he get to modern New York? Other smatterings of games past will keep you titillated if you're a follower of the series.
  • Pressure and tension are key elements to the fear in the game, instead of the weird long-haired Japanese children of most other horror titles. People's phobias, expectations, music all play a role in scaring you. It's like Silent Hill, without the excessive flesh and blood strewn about.
  • Most unique feature? Fire! Polloni elucidates: "We implemented realistic, unscripted propagation across all flammable surfaces and objects. It looks great, and behaves just like the real thing, burning at different speeds depending on the material. It can be a tool - setting fire to a broken table leg makes a useful torch and fire is a key weapon in your arsenal against adversaries, but it can also become an enemy itself - don't hang around too long in a burning room."
  • The character can be manipulated in both third and first-person views, varying depending on situations and whatnot. Think Silent Hill 4: The Room meets first-person weapon use like Metal Gear Solid 3.
  • Downloadable content? Sure! But no firm plans until they finish the "first season" -- the game is going to play out like a show, after all.

We're very excited for this game. It has a ton of promise and from what we learn about it every month, it's just more and more of a reason to start looking into the game. It's going to be different and often times, different is, in fact, better.

Section 8 is revived from development limbo

A long time ago, the developers of F.E.A.R. planned to use the Unreal Engine 3 in a game known as Section 8. Ever since then, the title vanished from headlines, tummylines, even toelines. It was, in essence, not on the body at all (in this analogy, the internet is a human body). Enter recently formed publisher GameCock, who have taken TimeGate Studio's game by the hand and brought it back to life.

The game is essentially a post-apocalyptic FPS title, with strategy and tactical elements a la Freedom Fighters (so we'd like to imagine). You are a member of Section 8 -- an elite group of infantry in powered armor who take on the most dangerous missions on many of the future's war-torn planets. Yes, planets, plural. Expect to kick some men on Mars and some women on Venus. Those weird creatures on Uranus? Well, insert your own clever innuendo here. Expect the title to pop up at E3, with an expected release date as of right now set in 2009.

Heavenly Sword devs promise blood, one edition, demo

hs-005.jpg

If you don't want to get any information about Heavenly Sword by cycling through the comments section over at Ninja Theory's blog on IGN, don't worry. We've got the skinny and we're delivering it to you, list style! All answers come courtesy of Mat Hart, producer of Heavenly Sword.

  • Blood: "We took a conscious decision to deliver a fairly elegant blood effect rather splashing it all over the walls as this is far more in keeping with the look and feel of the game." We take it that means we'll see some stylish blood-letting.
  • Special Edition: In a word, no. Sony has decided that, instead of making you pay extra for a special edition of the game, they're going to let Ninja Theory cram as many as they can onto the single Blu-ray disc. So far, they're planning for the retail disc to feature "a series of behind the scenes features as well as the first 2 episodes of a special 'animated series' exploring the history of the Heavenly Sword prior to the start of the game." Can you say, awesome?
  • Game Length: "It's hard to estimate exactly how long it'll take someone to run through it the first time but we believe that you can expect somewhere between 12-15 hours of play."
  • Demo: He explains they've got plans for a demo in the very near future and have been working on it for some time. If you want his words exactly, he says to "keep an eye out for this in the very near future...and i mean very near future!" Our clocks are ticking.

That's it for now. We think the word about no special edition is fantastic. It's a great example of a developer really taking advantage of all that extra space. Much better than shoving an extra disc in the case and upping the price $10-20. We'll look for a demo every week until we get one, but from his tone of voice, we might see one either right before or right after E3. Our bet is on right after.

Final Fantasy XIII not limited technically thanks to PS3

Speaking to Next-Gen, Tetsuya Nomura discussed game play aspects of Final Fantasy XIII as well as the power of next-generation consoles and their contribution to the title. When asked whether there is a now newfound responsibility on developers to devliver a new game experience due to more power, Nomura stated that one of the things that interests him is the ability to manage and create using the PS3. He claims that in the past they have been technically limited, and gives an example that battles could be going on both outside and inside a building almost seamlessly.

quote:

Do you think the power of the new generation of consoles means that there is a responsibility on game developers to deliver a new kind of gaming experience, rather than just better graphics, and is this part of your thinking with Versus XIII?

Is there a new direction for game conception in general? If there is, then like you say itʼs less about breathtaking graphics and perhaps more of a level design problem – one of the directions that interests me is how to manage and create, using the PS3, a seamless environment. In the past, field space has always been limited technically – in Versus XIII we want to see a seamless environment, and that in itself will create new situations and game elements. For example, someone could be shooting at you from a very great distance, or a battle could be happening both outside and inside a building in a very seamless manner. Thatʼs part of what we want to do using new technology.
