Sony: We will continue to add firmware updates as its a lot of fun

 

In a recent interview the PS3 system software engineers joked that Sony will continue releasing firmware updates so long as there is enough space on the hard drive. Further to this, the engineers stated they will not stop as its fun to add new functionality and they really like the feedback from gamers. The team was also asked about WMV and DivX playback on the system, to which they responded they are not industry standard but they do understand the demand (laughing).

Sony Bundles Hot Shots with PS3

New bundle represents 4,000 yen price cut.

 

The PS3's biggest game yet over in Japan is just about a month away from release, and, sure enough, Sony isn't being quiet about it. Following a heavily promoted downloadable demo of Minna no Golf 5 (known as Hot Shots Golf 5 oustide of Japan), Sony has announced a special PS3 package to coincide with the game's release.

 

Officially known as the PlayStation 3 Beginners' Pack, this bundle combines a PS3 system with a copy of Minna no Golf 5, all in a slick new box. It will be available on 7/26 at a cost of 61,980 yen for a 60 Gig version and 51,980 yen for a 20 Gig version.

 

There are a couple of points of note in this announcement. First, different from other territories, Sony seems to be continuing with sales of the two PS3 models in Japan. Currently, both 20 Gig and 60 Gig versions of the hardware are available for purchase at.

 

More importantly, the price of the bundle represents a savings of nearly 4,000 yen off the price of purchasing the game had hardware separately. It's not quite a price drop, but perhaps it will draw in a few holdouts.

Sony Cats, In-Game Messaging, Mainichi Issyo

Mainichi Issyo for the PS3 is best described as Home-lite. Sony mascots Toro and Kuro appear and give daily updates about things happening on the PSN and whatnot. Players get to edit the characters' room and even buy things to decorate it. It's currently Japan-only and has been around since last year, Mainichi Issyo also has mini games like Paper, Rock, Scissors. Actually, it's a lot of fun, and Sony should consider taking it to international markets. Thanks to the latest patch, it now seems to also have an in-game chatting function. Players can send, write and receive messages while playing as well as see the list of your friends and players met while in Mainichi Issyo. It's a free download from the Japanese PSN Store, and here's info on how to create a Japanese account in order to get it. Like I said, think of this as Home-lite. With cats.

The game is currently about 50% complete. There are definately 2 new characters yet to be seen, with the possibility of MORE. Please keep in mind that the game is still in beta testing and the final product will be different from how it is now.

 

- Animations have been changed for every character!

- All characters have an “item move”, like the Bryan shotgun we saw at the AOU trailer. Although not all of them will have the same effectiveness.

- An example of an “item move” will be Anna throwing her high heels at her opponents.

- Harada officially stated that Leo IS a girl.

- So far Yoshimitsu has gone under the most drastic change. Harada notes that it will be much more difficult to use Yoshimitsu this time around and they consider him an “Expert” character. Part of his story includes the fact that his sword is now losing power and he must take a new fighting style, Kenjutsu from the Manji clan, this includes both dual sword fighting and pure fist fighting!

- A lot of Lei Wulongʼs laying down stances have been changed. They look more like Lei Fei and Shun Diʼs laying down stance from Virtua Fighter 5. They also changed the properties where Lei can be counter-hit and juggled out of his laying down stances.

- Many changes were done to Marshall Law. It is noted that fans of Bruce Lee and those that know of Jeet Kune Do will be very pleased.

Sony to drop a "Bombshell"

And on the PlayStation 3, the report criticises Sony for not educating consumers as to what's in the box and relying too much on the PlayStation brand. Because of this a price drop is inevitable, says Screen Digest.

 

"A price drop before the end of the year is inevitable and would be in line with previous PlayStation first time price reduction timings."

 

"Marketing material has tended towards the esoteric and abstract and has seemingly failed to resonate with the consumer."

 

It also points out that Sony could drop a "bombshell" by the end of the year with a combined price drop and the launch of the Home virtual networking and online game service.

Exclusive: Sony San Diego Shifts Developers To PSN Games

Talking to Gamasutra as part of an upcoming San Diego Studio Tour series, SCEA producer Jim Molinets has revealed that the San Diego studio's internal team has "shifted focus" from large-scale PS2/PS3 titles into three PlayStation Network PS3 downloadable games, underscoring Sony's support for digital downloads.

 

Molinets explained to Gamasutra: "Internally, we have shifted our focus from doing large-scope PS2 and PS3 titles to doing PSN titles exclusively. We've got three smaller groups now, and they're all doing very differentiated products with different requirements."

 

These comments specifically relate to Sony San Diego's self-contained development team of around 30 people, though the studio still includes motion capture, art-related and administrative staff, with a total of around 200 people in product development.

 

As the SCEA producer went on to detail: "Our maximum team size is ten people, so we really utilize the strengths of all the different people within the studio. Each individual product has a technical lead, a design lead, and an art lead."

 

Sony's model for PSN has been significantly more first-party oriented than Microsoft's similar plans for Xbox Live Arcade, which only uses its internal Carbonated Games studio (Uno). As a contrast, Sony's internal studios have already released Blast Factor and Calling All Cars, and there appear to be multiple new first party PSN games on the way.

 

Molinets explains the attraction of being able to interact with the PSN community and make changes and improvements to the title swiftly, even after launch: "Because the [development] team is smaller, the dev cycle is smaller, and because our expertise level is high, we may be able to address things like that very quickly, as opposed to having to wait for a full two-year product cycle."

 

Finally, while not confirming that Telltale's franchise would make it to the PlayStation Network in the future, Molinets referenced it when discussing episodic titles on consoles: "That's definitely an opportunity on PSN. Sam & Max is a great example of that. You've got great characters that can go through a bunch of crazy scenarios."

 

Further details from Gamasutra's San Diego Studio Tour, which visited Rockstar San Diego, SCEA San Diego, and High Moon Studios, will be published as features over the next few weeks.
