PS3 BACKUPS BOOTING ;)

Fallout 3 confirmed for PS3

The fog of mystery that has surrounded Fallout 3 for the past several years is rapidly dissipating. Yesterday, developer/publisher Bethesda Softworks revealed that the long-awaited role-playing game will arrive in fall 2008--some 10 years after Fallout 2. The confirmation came in the form of a teaser trailer, which all showed off around two-minutes of in-engine footage and confirmed several story and setting details.

One thing Bethesda did not confirm was which platforms Fallout 3 would be arriving on. Though originally developed for the PC, the game officially remains only a "next-generation" title. However, the fact Bethesda's last RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, was simultaneously released for the Xbox 360 and PC and later ported to the PlayStation 3 led many to believe Fallout 3 would arrive on all three platforms.

Though Bethesda is still publicly mum on the subject, the question of Fallout 3's platforms was also answered this week. Not long after the trailer debuted, Game Informer posted the cover for its July issue, which confirms that Fallout 3 will indeed arrive on the PC, PS3, and 360 in 2008. Sources close to Bethesda said the information on the GI cover was accurate, but would not go into further details.

The GI cover also added ammo to the theory that Fallout 3 would be a major departure from previous PC Fallouts and the widely despised console spin-off, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. The magazine claims that Bethesda's goal has been to "reinvent" the RPG, which was originally a top-down turn-based title, into an all-new "open-ended RPG." Both Fallout and Fallout 2 offered open-ended gameplay with many side quests inside a larger, linear storyline--as did Oblivion.

Bethesda: Shivering Isles for PS3 still coming this year

Folks over at the NeoGAF Forums have probably inquired if Bethesda is intending to deliver the sole expansion pack to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PlayStation 3 this year and received a PR-ish reply that Shivering Isles is still coming to Sony's next-gen console.

Although they did specify the window of release (anywhere between today and December 31), they weren't keen on revealing when exactly it would come out in 2007. As to anything regarding unique content, downloadable content, or how the expansion pack will be distributed, they were mum about it.

Now while inthezone, a member of the NeoGAF Forums, was happy to share the email reply with other RPG fans on the PS3, the news did spark concern regarding Sony's superior line up of title releases this fall. Many of the titles are big and very highly anticipated and fans of the game fear that the expansion pack would probably be forgotten by then.

Will Bethesda get another repeat of angry mobs at the gates? Unless they do share their information soon, just as the promise in the email, they just might. Here's to hoping they reveal more soon, folks

RE5 not till April of 08?

Capcom's latest financial report, which also revealed the less-than-spectacular Lost Planet and Dead Rising sales in Japan, has a curious absence from their lineup for the upcoming financial year: Resident Evil 5.

Unless the publisher is planning on making a surprise announcement, it is unlikely we'll see the sequel until next fiscal year beginning April 2008. We have contacted Capcom for an official statement.

The report listed Devil May Cry 4 and both Resident Evil Wii titles (RE4 and Umbrella Chronicles) as upcoming major release, with DMC4 expected to sell 1.8 million units worldwide.

Will Sony Cut Jobs in Japan, Too?

SCEA confirms developers, execs unaffected by streamlining.

In April, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe cut 160 jobs to "streamline operations" overseas. Yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed a similar effort was underway, rumored to affect somewhere between 80 to 100 employees, according to the original report that appeared on Kotaku.

Is Japan next?

Mainstream media reports over the SCEA changes offer conflicting suggestions. Sony Computer Entertainment spokeswoman Nanako Kato told Reuters they are "taking another look at the company as a whole," and that involved investigating ways to make Japan more efficient. Right now, however, there are apparently no plans on the table.

Another spokeswoman, this time Sayoka Henmi, talked with the Associated Press, saying "the goal is to reform the organization" and no cuts are planned for Japan.

1UP confirmed with Sony that Kato's quotes are an accurate reflection of the situation as we know it so far -- but we've heard this song and dance before. When the SCEE cuts were discovered, the company said changes could be in store in America and Japan, but -- guess what -- nothing had been decided.

Additionally, we've uncovered more about yesterday's layoffs at SCEA. Good news for gamers worried about the creative staff within the company, as Senior Director of Corp. Communications Dave Karraker confirmed to 1UP that "no executives or game developers were affected."
