GTA IV Gets a Special Edition

Available for pre-order now.

Not that any of us are all that surprised, but today Rockstar announced that a special edition version of Grand Theft Auto IV will be hitting store shelves alongside the regular version of the much-anticipated sequel. Come October 16 in North America and October 19 in Europe, fans of rampant crime-sprees can have their feast of felonies in two different flavors.

The Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition comes inside a metal safety deposit box and contains a number of items besides the game itself. An exclusive art book will showcase production artwork used on the game and a soundtrack CD will highlight the music from "top artists" that is featured in the game. In addition, Rockstar fans will find themselves the proud owners of a Rockstar branded keychain and duffel bag.

Pre-ordering has already started for the Grand Theft Auto Special Edition, which will retail for $89.99 when it releases this fall.

Limited Edition for Creed

Ubisoft's Assassin gets the special treatment

IGN has learned that Ubisoft will announce tomorrow the release of an all-new "limited edition" version of Assassin's Creed. Scheduled for shipment "later this year," Assassin's Creed Limited Edition will be distributed in much lower quantities than the regular SKU (hence the "limited" moniker and not a "special" one).

Though the limited edition's gameplay content will be identical to that of the standard version, Assassin's Creed LE will boast a number of bonus supplemental content items. In addition to a specialized tin packaging, the game will also include a figurine of lead character Altair, Penny Arcade comics, a miniature strategy guide, and Assassin-themed short films. Behind-the-scenes videos, official trailers, developer diaries, producer interviews and other unnamed goodies are also planned

Assassin's Creed Limited Edition, release date unknown, will retail for $69.99 (US) and be available for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The standard version will ship at $59.99.

Sony Talks God Of War III

We all know that Sony must be planning to unleash the mighty Kratos sooner or later on their prized next-gen console, the Playstation 3. Head God Of War developer, Cory Barlog, is very excited at the prospect of delivering God Of War 3 and states that the team are very enthusiastic in wanting to do just that.

quote:

"There's definitely the enthusiasm of us wanting to do that, to make the God of War III," series director Cory Barlog told ShackNews, "but there's obviously no commitment to that right now." "Put it this way. If we ever do get to make God of War III, it'll have connections to all the games, just like [God of War PSP] has direct links to [God of War] II. So if you go and you play this game, if you remember in II or you go back and play II, you'll see situations that are directly explained because of the PSP [version] and [this game] helps flesh out [the mythology] even more. All these games have a connection to each other."

Metal Gear Solid 4 Before March '08?

Konami's fiscal outlook drops a hint at Snake's return

Konami reported its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2007, and the company is doing better than ever. While the revenue reports and earnings breakdowns may prove interesting for some of our more fiscally minded readers, the juiciest tidbit of info was about Konami's hugely-anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

When discussing its current outlook for fiscal '08, a period ending next March, Konami listed Metal Gear Solid 4 as one of the main drivers of potential revenue. Up until now, the company had been mysteriously tight-lipped regarding this game's release date. However, these latest remarks seem to indicate that we will be playing Metal Gear Solid 4 by March 31, 2008 at the latest.

Looking at its performance from this year, Konami reported that total revenue had increased 6.9% over last year to 280.3 billion yen ($2.3 billion). Operating income also increased from 2.5 billion yen to 28.1 billion yen ($231.9 million), while net income fell 29.5% to 16.2 billion yen ($133 million).

Looking forward, Konami anticipated a net revenue increase of 5.3% to 295 billion yen ($2.4 billion), an operating income increase of 17.3% to 33 billion yen ($272 million) and a rise in net income to almost 13% to 18.3 billion yen ($151 million).

Haze PS3 exclusive

Haze, the FPS developed in Free Radical, was orginally listed as a 360, PS3 and PC title, but at the recent UBISOFT press confrence it was only listed as a PS3 title. Furthermore, Jeuxvideo has claimed that Ubisoft announced Haze as a PS3 exclusive at the event.

Whether this is true is anyone's guess, but for the moment it appears that Haze will most likely be a timed exclusive.

While Haze looks to be a great game made by the makers of Time Splitters, for the PS3 to achieve an exclusive after sharing titles such as Assassin's Creed and GTA, seems like some misguided logic . Thus, it will be necessary to wait until tomorrow for more clarification on this subject.

Concerning the play itself, the developers showed a new trailer and explained the scenario: Mantel is a group which controls the world, the oil industry and the pharmaceutical industry. Mantel also produces a very powerful drug which members of the army use to increase their abilities.

PlayStation Eye is future of game control, says LocoRoco dev

At the Nordic Game conference in Sweden last week, LocoRoco creator Tsutomu Kouno expressed indifference on motion sensing controllers. When asked on potentially creating a title for the Wii, he "didn't have much interest." Kouno-san seemed far more impressed with the technological possibilities of a peripheral like the PlayStation Eye, conjuring its controller possibilities. Harkening Minority Report similarities, he imagines playing a game "using hands, without even touching the controller." Sounds like someone read our earlier report on the 3-D mapping capabilities of the PlayStation Eye and may be cooking up something special for the PS3 audience. The PlayStation Eye is gearing up for a July release so stay tuned for more updates on new and unique uses for this peripheral.

The wonderful technology behind Eye of Judgement

matrix22.jpg

The Sony-developed key component behind Eye of Judgement is called Cybercode. This award-winning tech was built upon "the Matrix method," a visual identification technique that "identifies real world objects and estimates their coordinate systems simultaneously." In essence, it turns a barcode-like symbol on a game board into a sweet-looking fire-breathing dragon.

The 2D matrix code relies on a square-shaped barcode and since the matrix codes are printable, it offers a low-cost technology with high-tech appeal. It's not exactly new, since this particular technology has been in research for some time. The original video shown here (after the cut) dates as far back as 1996. It's amazing stuff and we can't wait to play with it in Eye of Judgement. How about you?
