MGS4 Won't Be Changed Because of 360

1UP joins the Kojima Production podcast for heated platform talk

Quickly, third-party publishers have moved from platform exclusivity to supporting Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 simultaneously. Devil May Cry, once a Sony-exclusive series, is suddenly appearing on both this fall. Last generation, Xbox would have received the port six months later. Now, it's at the same time. Rumors suggested the same fate's falling on one of PS3's biggest hitters, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

1UP's James Mielke, Ryan O'Donnel and Shane Bettenhausen joined Ryan Payton's Kojima Productions Report podcast this week in Japan, where the four debated the ups and downs of multi-platform production, SIXAXIS support and more. You can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes, download the MP3 directly or keep tabs on the podcast's website.

Payton knows fans have legitimate concerns about Kojima Productions possibly compromising the game's ambition due to issues arising from concurrent Xbox 360 development -- divided resources, less disc space, etc. -- and he addressed those directly:

"I can tell you honestly at this point, we have not changed the game in any form with the idea of 'oh, we got to do this on 360.' Put aside whether or not we're developing for 360 or not, the game is built on the PS3 hardware, as you guys have known for the past two years or so."

In other words: if MGS4 comes to Xbox 360, it has not affected the game's development. This is the same game Hideo Kojima decided to produce from day one. Make sure to listen to the podcast for more from Payton and the 1UP boys about Snake, Xbox 360 vs. PS3 and more.

Game Informer #170: Call of Duty 4 Issue

The new Game Informer has a huge 10 page spread on Activision's 'Infinity Ward' developed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and the game looks stunning.

What Game Informer had to say:

"The most intense first-person shooter WE HAVE EVER SEEN!"

"The cumulative effect is that this is the most photo-realistic video game we've ever seen, and that's no overstatement."

"Everything we saw looked as epic and amazing as anything we've seen in video games to date, from a night time search-and-destroy mission aboard a storm-tossed freighter to a scene in the Russion steppes with some disturbing imagery that suggests this foe [fictional, unlike previous C.O.D. games] is as brutal and despicable as the Third Reich ever was."

What I say:

The shadowing/lighting in general is on par with Gears of War (which is no trivial feat), and some of the subtleties in the pictures are simply breathtaking. The overall look/art direction of the game seems to combine some of the best elements from Gears and Metal Gear Solid, while still remaining 'unique' looking.

Models are awesome, tough obviously not quite as geometrically complex as those in Gears or MGS... but the lighting and texturing destroys MGS... while not quite hitting 'Gears' levels...

The best part...? It all runs at 60fps. That's right, here's another quote:

Infinity Ward:

"Being 60 frames per second is really important to us. Some people don't think that there's a difference between 30 and 60, but we feel like there's an unconscious understanding that when you're at 60 frames per second it feels more realistic... ...We push it all the way we can, but we stop at 60 - anything that would make it go under 60, we get rid of..."

That's right. Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare should never drop below 60 fps. For all of those who thought that achieving similar visual fidelity to games like Gears of War and MGS wasn't possible at 60fps, this game proves you wrong.

Effects clearly evident in-game:

- Highly detailed textures that are easily on par with, or surpass anything shown in MGS (not quite to Gears level, though)

-Insane particles everywhere

-High poly geometric meshes, that while maybe not *quite* up to Gears/MGS are really, really close.

- Depth of field - incredible shots where the foreground is out of focus... these shots look insanely realistic... and it's in-game.

- Equal-to or better-than smoke effects found in COD 2 & 3

- Gorgeous lighting that blows away MGS, and looks about on par with Gears in many ways.

- Anti-Aliasing

Riddick remake for PS3, 360

Starbreeze has confirmed its working on a next-gen makeover of The Chronicles of Riddick.

Assault on Dark Athena will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360 before the end of the year.

There will be around 50 per cent more single-player content to get stuck into - taking place on board the scavenger ship Dark Athena - and an online multiplayer mode will be included.

Commentary is also expected to feature in a similar way to the Developer's Cut remake on PC, as is the obvious graphical spit-shine to show off the new floating terrafloppy-tehcnotrons.

The Chronicles of Riddick appeared on Xbox, based on the 2004 film of the same name. It took everyone by surprise, not least because the big-screen version starring Vin Diesel was rubbish.

The first-person action [with third-person cutscenes, obviously! - Ed] game displayed some of the best graphics we'd seen, and earned itself a whopping 9/10. Catch up with our The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay review to see why.

80GB PS3 on Sony Korea site

New information on the website for Sony Computer Entertainment Korea suggests that an 80GB version of PlayStation 3 will be arriving in the territory next month, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

According to the site, the 80GB model will bear a pre-tax price tag of KRW 518,000 (USD 557 / EUR 412 / GBP 232) and will hit the shops on June 16.

There is no word on when or indeed whether the 80GB PS3 will go on sale in other regions. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

In March, following an FCC filing by Sony which referred to an 80GB version, SCEE said there were no current plans to introduce such a model.

However, Sony spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka last month hinted that larger hard drive-enabled PS3s would be available in the future, stating, "Even 60GB may not be big enough eventually."

No 80GB PS3 for Europe

A Sony spokesperson has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that an 80GB PlayStation 3 is to go on sale in Korea - but said there are no plans to launch the model in Europe.

News of the 80GB version emerged via a statement on the Sony Korea website, which said the 80GB version will launch there on June 16 priced at KWR 518,000 (EUR 412).

A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed that the information is correct, stating that the 80GB model will be the only one available in South Korea as there are no plans to launch the 20GB or 60GB versions there.

Nor are there any current proposals to make the larger hard drive-enabled model available here, according to the spokesperson, who told GI.biz, "At this moment in time, there are no plans to introduce the 80GB version of PlayStation 3 in Europe."

Rumours of an 80GB PlayStation 3 began to emerge in March after it was referred to in a filing issued by Sony to the US Federal Communications Commission for a class II permissive change.

The filing also included details of proposed changes to the console's Bluetooth feature. But according to the SCEE spokesperson, "The chassis of the 80GB Korean PlayStation 3 is identical to the chassis of the European version. The only exception is the larger hard drive."

Cockpit view confirmed for Gran Turismo 5

[/url]

sony-playstation-3-vision-gt-gran-turismo-5_23.jpg

Simulation fans will have yet another reason to look forward to Gran Turismo 5. According to an special episode of Jeuxvideo.TV, a Saleen cockpit view will be included in the game. Fans may recall the previous reiterations included a cockpit view that was more outside the car than in, allowing you to seemingly smell the fresh air and swallow bugs while strapped to the hood. Well now, the cockpit view will actually show the components inside the car as well, giving fans a chance to check out the things one would see inside a car, like a dashboard with all the cool dials and buttons, and maybe even a few air fresheners dangling from the rear-view!

Alone in the Dark interview: tech to advance the horror genre

alone_in_the_dark_6.jpg

The upcoming Alone in the Dark title has a lot to compete with when released late this year or early next year, but it still looks like a step in the right direction for the original survival horror game. Presented in New York with a fictional story ... timeline ... thing, the game sounds kind of like an interactive film noir. Game director David Nadal recently talked about the technology used to make the game a whole new kind of horror. Since we love doing it, we'll summarize the important points below. As always, read the interview if you're particularly interested in the subject.

As we've said, this is a simple summary. Nadal goes into much more detail about the lighting and physics engines, but we won't bog you down with a bunch of terminology here. The game sound excellent and we're very excited to try it out. Time will tell how it progresses!

New Fracture details, co-op confirmed!

If you missed the strangely entertaining (and musically epic) trailer for the upcoming LucasArts title Fracture (or if you're like me, Psi-Ops with land-altering grenades minus the psychic abilities), please go back and watch it. It just hit the right chords for me -- a guy who generally doesn't find entertainment in first- and third-person shooters. PSU scored an interview with LucasArts producer David Perkinson and we're going to summarize it. It's pretty cool, so go ahead and read the entire thing if you're particularly interested.

That's it for now. Don't know why, but this game might just turn into a sleeper hit or a very, very far miss. Odds are higher on a sleeper hit, though, since it seems to share a few design similarities with the aforementioned Psi-Ops. We'll keep you updated on this one.

[Thanks, Justin!]

WarHawk final formats finally figured out

In a lengthy interview with Game Informer, Senior VP of Marketing Peter Dille came out with many fantastic bits of information regarding PlayStation Home, multiple games and other nagging questions we've been wondering about. From the "Hall of Fame" (PlayStation's take on achievements) to E3 to WarHawk, a lot of issues were addressed but we've got to admit the WarHawk info really made us nod.

Here's what Dille said about the final formatting decision on WarHawk: "Warhawk will be available as a download from the PlayStation Network, but we'll also have a retail SKU. There will be differences between the two. The game will be the same, but in the retail SKU we're able to take advantage of that Blu-ray disc and pack that disc with behind-the-scenes information, developer interviews, demos of othergames and again, if you've got Blu-ray why not take advantage of that. On top of that, we'll have a Bluetooth wireless headset so that you can jump into the fray on day one and start trash-talking."

So for the cost of $60 in North America, you get WarHawk, oodles of extras and a Bluetooth headset? Sounds like a deal and/or bargain. For those who don't yet have a headset of any kind, this is a fantastic deal. While he didn't comment on the pricing of the PSN download version, we'd estimate they'd keep it at $20-$30 because it is just online and headsets aren't cheap. Especially bluetooth. If you want to learn anything else, check out the complete interview with Dille.
