Saint's Row has been cancelled - also, Saint's Row 2 announced!

The PlayStation 3 port of Saint's Row has been officially cancelled after disappearing from the radar some time ago. THQ announced that all the resources dedicated to the port have been moved to Saint's Row 2, which will come out on the PlayStation 3 as well as the Xbox 360 in 2008. The original Saint's Row came out in 2006 on the Xbox 360 to positive reviews and has gone onto sell an impressive 1.4 million copies.

The cancellation will surely upset some people, but I'd rather have a fully developed and polished sequel than a port of a 9 month old game myself. It will give THQ more time to familiarize themselves with the complex architecture of the PS3 and tweak the gameplay of the series. The game was pretty good, but had some technical and gameplay issues (jaw-droppingly dumb storyline aside) that I hope they fix in the sequel.

The Club excels with killing spree combos

steelmill2.jpg

Thick and visceral, The Club is all about head-shots and body count. Nick Davies, Bizarre Creations design manager, says "it's everything that Splinter Cell and Gears of War isn't." And boy, he isn't kidding. Wearing a bullet-proof vest, the game-play demonstration showed an on-screen character running directly towards baddies and firing multiple rounds. There is no ducking for cover here, and certainly no stealth. What sets the game apart is its implementation of a combo system where points are multiplied with head-shots, explosions and all varieties of interesting kills. In order to keep you focused on the task at hand, the combo meter begins to drain between gaps in the killing, so best to head towards large occupied rooms. In addition to the details gathered on our last look at The Club, it seems levels are broken up in pieces, allowing you to tackle these "bite-sized challenges" in any order you'd like, one at a time.

There is something strangle fun and yet, sickening about the game I can't quite put a finger on. Nevertheless, take a gander at more details of the quick preview and share with us your opinions. Is this a game that will be on your radar? Or are you sick and tired of shooters and yearn for more non-violent gaming?

Some Alone in the Dark screens -- candy for your eyes

905_0002.jpg

As I've probably said before, prior to this installment of Alone in the Dark, I was never really interested in it. Sure, it was the original survival horror title, but it just wasn't Resident Evil. Anyway, someone over at the PS3 Forums took it upon themself to up two wallpaper-worthy crazy/beautiful screenshots (no, not the awful Kirsten Dunst movie). Since the game is more of an interactive novel than a "health-bar, ammo display" action game, we're not entirely sure if the screenshots are pre-rendered or in-game. We'll side with logic and reason and assume they're pre-rendered.

The game is due out around January of 2008, so we're expecting some details of the game to surface closer to the big shows in the coming months. If you're itching to read something about the game, refer back to some of our other screenshot posts on the subject. Or one of those times we talked about the story. Either way, prepare for this franchise to take a different step, moving itself into the light of success. Or something else epic, dramatic, flashy, and poetic.

Warhawk beta starts soon and you are not getting in

warhawk_425.jpg

It looks like Incognito was telling the truth -- Warhawk is indeed having a beta and it looks like it is starting sooner than was expected. A user on PS3 Forums just received an e-mail inviting him to become a potential beta tester for the sci-fi combat game. The problem? Only Sony RLS members got the invites, and you can only become a member of RLS if you work for certain retail store that sells PS3s. It is supposed to be more exclusive than the GAP membership that they based the private Home beta on. I'm getting screwed again!

The initial e-mail didn't include a date for the start of the beta, but if they're recruiting players now, you can be guaranteed it will start in the near future. It is likely that this is only phase one of the beta (much like with Home), so don't worry too much - there should still be be more chances later to get into the Warhawk beta. We'll let you know as soon as we know more.

Ninja Gaiden: Sigma is complete, will sneak into American stores 7/3

Tecmo held a press event in Japan earlier today titled 'Tecmo's Nite Out 07,' where they announced their upcoming line-up of games. Like the other recent Gamer's Days, this was held as a kind of company-specific alternative to the now defunct E3, which would normally be held about now. A number of new titles were announced, and even though there was nothing new announced for the PlayStation 3, we did get some good news.

According to IGN, the director of Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Yosuke Hayashi, took the stage to announce to the assembled press that they had recently wrapped up development on the highly anticipated re-make of the Xbox classic. They also announced release dates of June 14th in Japan and July 3rd in North America. Unfortunately, no European date was announced. Guess we'll have to wait on Eidos for more details on that.

This means that I have approximately two months to polish up my Ryu skills. I never really played the Xbox ones, so I have been getting my ass handed to me by the demo. The plethora of health items is helpful, but the lack of saves is annoying. Good lord, is it pretty though.

PS3 has made Folding@Home #1 globally

Another piece of good Folding news has made its way to our ears and, consequently, fingers as we type up the reasoning behind our subject line. The PS3 has made Folding@Home the most powerful distributed computing resource on the entire planet. For the calculations being run, it makes the PS3 and the Folding project as a whole the most powerful supercomputer of any type. We are awesome, basically.

Two million CPU's have contributed to the project. Don't you guys feel like part of something great? A community who has only decided to give and give and give to a project that might save lives? We've done a great thing and we should continue to do what we're doing (especially if you're part of the PS3 Fanboy folding team), because who knows how much street cred the PS3 will get when it happens upon a cure for some kind of disease.

MotorStorm dev talks SPU usage and 'cooperative rendering'

Scott Kirkland, the Technical Director behind MotorStorm, sat down with Beyond3D recently to talk about some of the more technical details of developing the intense off-road racer. They cover a pretty wide range of topics, from Evolution's contributions in developing the Havok 4.5 physics middleware, to culling unseen vertices in order to increase rendering performance. Here are a couple highlights:

On SPU usage:

"MotorStorm only uses between 15 and 20 percent of available SPU resource, so we're aiming to achieve a 5 fold increase in SPU performance, which should allow us to do some awesome stuff!"

On using the SPUs and RSX for cooperative rendering:

"The leap in performance provided by [the SPUs] gives us the bandwidth to significantly reduce RSX time spent processing vertices that don't contribute to the final scene. The favoured approach is to use SPUs to generate minimal scene/instance specific index and vertex buffers from compressed data."

It is a fantastic read, and well worth checking out. It gets EXTREMELY technical at a couple points, so don't feel bad if your brain catches on fire. I set off the fire alarm twice.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Delayed?

The number 1# reason to own a PS3 has been delayed till next year, which is surely going to piss off a lot of PS3 owners. Metal Gear Solid was going to be the firing shot back to the 360ʼs HALO and Lost Odyssey combo this fall but it seems instead Sony is gonna have to depend on Uncharted and their other first party games to take up the slack. I certainly hope this years Ratchet and Clank is super kick ass.

According to GameSwank emails were sent out from EBgameS and Gamestop to customers who had pre-orders; notifying them of the new release date info.

Dear Customer,

You have signed up to receive release date changes for:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=T000316

Old Release Date - 9/1/2007

New Release Date - 3/1/2008

Thank you for visiting EBgames.com!

NOTE: The product release date is the best estimate as to when the product will become available. These dates are subject to change at anytime. EBGames.com is in constant communication with product vendors to provide you with the most accurate release dates possible.

So from this email even March isnʼt a sure thing, well good things are worth waiting for I suppose. But how does this affect PS3 sales this coming Fall?

Previews: Final Fantasy XIII

We check out another brief trailer update for Square's biggest game.

Square Enix revealed a tiny trickle of new info and imagery for Final Fantasy XIII at its massive Square Enix Party 2007 event in Tokyo today. It's becoming tragically clear that tacking a few seconds of new footage onto a slightly remixed trailer constitutes a major update these days, so fans will simply have to contend with meager crumbs of intel until the floodgates finally open at some undisclosed future time, but we do have a few new minor details about the game.

FFXIII once again wowed crowds with its blend of jaw-droppingly gorgeous CG and almost equally sexy real-time combat scenes. Most of the new content came at the trailer's outset, as surreal, beautiful landscapes from one of the game's "worlds," Pulse, flashed across the screen in rapid succession. These environments (seemingly real-time) looked so intensely alien that it's hard to even process exactly what we were seeing...other than the fact that they're spectacularly pretty.

After that, we once again saw oddly-named heroine Lightning dispatching foes with her high-tech weaponry, absurd acrobatics, and impressive abilities to control both time and gravity. The recycled trailer then showcased her mysterious blonde male friend (a fellow party member, hopefully?) performing impressive motorcycle feats, the supersexy summon Shiva (and her twin sister of sorts) morphing into a motorbike, and plenty of ridiculously over-the-top action that seems far too chaotic and detailed to actually be gameplay.

Fans with watchful eyes caught tiny glimpses of new stuff, like summoned monster Ifrit and a new type of enemy solider, but most of the trailer felt like a rehash of what Square has been rolling out since last E3. No release date was given, naturally, but the game's PS3 exclusivity was once again confirmed at the clip's end.
