PLAYSTATION Network Upgrade: 8/5

Over the next few weeks, some new and exciting changes will take place in the PLAYSTATION®Store. In preparation for this, both PLAYSTATION®Network and PLAYSTATION®Store need to be taken offline for a short while to allow us to carry out the upgrade and maintenance work.

This is scheduled to take place between 16:00 and 19:00 BST (17:00-20:00 CEST) on Tuesday 8th May 2007.

If you are already logged into an online game during this time, you will most likely find that you can continue playing as normal, but you will not be able to log in or start a new game until full service has been restored. You will also not be able to access the Store during this maintenance window.

We are hoping to complete this work in as short a time as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. But remember that these enhancements are paving the way for new and exciting content that we have planned for the Store!

Sony Announces PlayStation Network Tickets

Those without a credit card can finally buy stuff from the PlayStation Store.

Credit cards and electronic money (via the Edy system) are currently the only ways PS3 owners over in Japan can purchase content through the Japanese PlayStation Network Store. This limitation will at long last disappear come early June.

Sony Computer Entertainment formally announced today PlayStation Network Tickets, a form of electronic money that can be used with the Japanese PlayStation Store. PlayStation Network Tickets, set to be available in units of 1,000, 3,000, 5,000, and 10,000 yen, can be purchased at convenience stores throughout Japan. Each ticket contains a 12 digit code which can be fed to the PlayStation Network to charge up your wallet.

The tickets will be available through electronic kiosks at 26,000 convenience stores, including Lawsons, Family Mart, Daily Yamazaki, Mini Stop and Sunkus. You'll also be able to use 26,000 post office ATM machines to pay for the tickets, although you'll have to first register via a special mobile website.

This system is a bit different from the card systems that Microsoft and Nintendo use for their virtual shops. Wii and Xbox Live point cards are available for purchase at standard retailers throughout Japan.

Sony has yet to announce a similar program for markets outside of Japan. Given the Japanese program's reliance on convenience stores, we have a feeling international versions will differ.

Hydrophobia Info Leaks out

Blade Interactive lifts the lid on its watery title.

UK developer Blade Interactive has been busy working on its secretive next-gen title Hydrophobia for years, but has now finally released details about the upcoming survival adventure.

According to the game's official website, Hydrophobia is a "revolutionary survival adventure game which uses HydroEngine to deliver the most realistic water you've ever seen". The HydroEngine has been in research and development for three years.

As the title and above quote would suggest, the game's central theme is water, which is used to overcome obstacles by moving objects and also provides plenty of dangerous situations as you swim against strong currents or get trapped in a flooding room.

Along with this revolutionary new water system, Hydrophobia also uses Blade's new Infinite Worlds AI system, which "provides incredibly information rich environments".

According to Blade, enemies and non-player-characters have a detailed knowledge of the world around them. They remember areas that are flooded, which doors have been locked/unlocked and dynamically react to changes in the environments.

Although exact gameplay details are still sparse, Blade revealed that you play as Kate Wilson a systems engineer who becomes a reluctant hero when terrorists take over a futuristic city-sized cruise liner - called the Queen of the World. Unfortunately Kate is afraid of water, which will no doubt lead to plenty of scary liquid-based situtations for her.

SEGA announces Condemned 2: Bloodshot

SEGA of America and SEGA Europe today announced Condemned 2: Bloodshot the next chapter in the terrifying series that began with the award-winning and critically-acclaimed Condemned. Featuring an all-new fighting mechanic and online multiplayer functionality, Condemned 2: Bloodshot is a first-person action thriller which immerses players in a world of psychological terror. Following a string of gruesome murders, players must use their deductive skills and brute force to track down sadistic serial killers.

Developed by the renowned Monolith Productions, creators of the original Condemned, Condemned 2: Bloodshot is due for release across Europe in early 2008 for the Xbox 360™ videogame and entertainment from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system.

Players will assume the identity of Ethan Thomas, the former Serial Crimes Unit investigator, who's been called back to duty to track down his missing partner. As Ethan, players will engage in visceral combat using a variety of firearms, blunt instruments and an all-new fighting system complete with defensive and offensive combo chains. To help track the killer and solve the mysteries behind Condemned 2: Bloodshot, players will crack open an all-new set of high-tech forensic tools. Using wits and brute strength, murders can be solved in a number of different ways to keep players guessing throughout each suspenseful investigation.

Condemned 2: Bloodshottakes the series to a whole new level by introducing a variety of thrilling online multiplayer modes including deathmatch, which promises to deliver the most brutal hand-to-hand combat experience the first person genre has ever seen.

"The original, Condemned, was a game which truly shocked and scared its players with its subtle details, gripping story and eerie tension throughout," said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe. "Condemned 2: Bloodshot takes these three key elements to heightened new levels, providing a superb mature gaming experience that will constantly surprise its players and keep them gripped from start to finish."

The disturbing events from Ethan's past have left him a broken man - a desperate burnout, drifting aimlessly through a society in inexplicable decline. Fighting inner demons throughout his one-man investigation into a sinister conspiracy, Ethan will need to use anything and everything in the environment to survive as he unravels the mysteries shrouding the city in darkness.
