Assassin's Creed not PS3 exclusive

Ubisoft's medieval stealth game will not be limited to Sony's upcoming system; will eventually reach PC, says publisher.

"What is the meaning of life?" "How does Dick Clark stay looking so young?" "Is Assassin's Creed a PlayStation 3 exclusive?" One of these lingering questions has finally been answered today, and unfortunately for the philosophers and elderly out there, it's the latter.

Reports on the Internet have been nothing less than rampant on the state of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed. Initially mentioned for the Xbox 360 as Project Assassin and then mentioned only for the PlayStation 3 (without the word "exclusive") at E3 2006, the answer of the game's ultimate platform destinations have been as stealthy as its sneaky protagonist.

The latest info comes from sites pointing towards magazine PC Gamer UK, which recently said that a PC version was in the works. No mention was made of the rumored Xbox 360 version.

At last, Ubisoft has shed some light on the subject, but still stays mum on the game headed to Microsoft's console.

A rep from the publisher told GameSpot, "Assassin's Creed PC will indeed see the light some day. Details will be provided at a later date."

Assassin's Creed is due in 2007 for the PS3, no date was given for the PC version. For more on the game, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Ridge Racer PS3 details emerge

Ridge Racer 7 will support 14 player online races and allow you to customise vehicles for the first time when it makes its debut on PlayStation 3.

Thats according to Japanese mag Famitsu, which has spilled a few juicy details on the upcoming Namco Bandai racer.

Online Battle mode will allow 14 players to go head-to-head or team up for co-op races with relay, time attack, team battle and pair attack options.

There will be 22 courses - or 44 if you count reversing the tracks - and a mighty 160 races in the main Ridge State Grand Prix mode.

As well as an Arcade mode with two-player splitscreen, Global Time Attack will allow players to face off with the online community and even team up, again via splitscreen, for time attacks in pairs.

In a first for the series, and perhaps in an effort to bring it a little more up to date, Machine Connector will let you pimp your rides. Tweaking performance, engine tuning, nitro, exterior customisation and more will be offered, with new decals available via Sonys online service.

A Ranking Browser will display data from racers across the globe, and UFLA Special Events will include content that can be downloaded to the console, although details are still foggy on that one.

Expect Ridge Racer 7 to be one of the big titles on display at the Tokyo Game Show - well be there and bringing you more details next month.

GT creator plans revolution

The latest PR missive from the Sony mothership in Tokyo comes this week in the form of a video interview with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, which is hosted on the firm's official PS3 "concept" website and explores the Polyphony Digital boss' great big love for the forthcoming console.

Okay, yes, it's quite clearly a carefully PR-managed piece of spin masquerading as a real interview, and it's universally positive and glowing in its praise for the PlayStation 3 (a bit like all the other PR-conducted interviews and, dare we say it, ostensibly "unofficial" but clearly corporate-approved insider blogs which have sprung up like a rash around the industry of late) - but buried in the marginally-more-tolerable-in-a-foreign-language hype are a few interesting titbits about Yamauchi's view on next-gen development.

For a start, Mr Gran Turismo reckons that he's now finally happy with a videogame console in terms of physics modelling power. PlayStation and PS2 couldn't manage the degree of simulation he wanted in his games, he tells us - but the PS3 will do "true" physics, which is presumably code for "good enough to look real".

Assuming it's not just more "jacking into the Matrix" style spin, this could be worth considering for fans of simulation-style racing games; like it or loathe it, Gran Turismo is a game which prides itself on its realism, and if Yamauchi reckons PS3 (and presumably, by extension, other next-gen systems such as the Xbox 360 and high end PCs) packs enough of a punch to bring physics in those games up to scratch, then this generation could be a golden era for simulation-focused games.

On the topic of graphics, Yamauchi says that he's "surprised" at the major impact of moving everything to high definition, and thinks that players will probably be somewhat shocked by how much of a difference it makes to the games they play. Yes, we know the Xbox 360 users are looking smug right now, but bear in mind that this interview is for the Japanese market - they sell more condoms in the Vatican in an average week than they sell Xbox 360s in Japan.

Interestingly, Yamauchi also claims that while making high definition content is really hard for developers because of the level of detail involved ("on the same level as movies," he claims), he does believe that game developers have a big advantage over those working on bringing other types of content into high definition. Games have "unusual potential" because they are the fastest and simplest way to produce high quality hi-def content, he says, which could give them the edge over movies.

Of course, it wouldn't be a PlayStation 3 PR interview without a lovely soundbite which Sony will now proceed to be mocked over for months. This time, it's Yamauchi's claim that as a developer, he wants to make products that "change society." "For us, the PlayStation 3 is a weapon for revolution," he concludes. Whether he'll be spurring this revolution by jacking into the Matrix and fighting a giant enemy crab remains a closely guarded secret

Fight Night punches onto PS3

It may not be a sucker-punch surprise, but EA has confirmed that Fight Night Round 3 will land blows on PlayStation 3 this winter.

The highly-praised boxing sim wonʼt be just a simple port either, as new features are being added to the mix. It'll be "the closest youʼll get to trading blows with Muhammad Ali," according to producer Michael Blank.

The new Get in the Ring mode will be entirely first-person, allowing gamers to really take it in the face. We'd imagine it'll be similar to the switch in viewpoint featured in the Xbox 360 version, where you concentrate blows right at your opponent's noggin. Which should really show off those lovely facial animations.

And when we say ʽfacial animationʼ, we mean the split lips, busted-up eyes, flying sweat and streaming blood.

You can also expect complete ESPN Intergration - updates, scores, breaking news, radio and real footage via ESPN Motion beamed live to your console.

There really is no escaping the punch-drunk action.

Thereʼs no word on an official release date yet, although we wouldnʼt be surprised if itʼs a launch title to help the PS3 knuckle-up to the competition.

Sony has confirmed on its official PlayStation 3 site that the low-end $500 PlayStation 3 configuration will not be able to play Blu-Ray movies in their full 1080p resolution. Playback of Blu-Ray discs at 1080p requires an HDMI connection, which the $500 model lacks.
