Euro Ninja Gaiden demo iffy

Unfortunately us Europeans will have to sit and watch from the sidelines as US and Japanese gamers enjoy a demo for Ninja Gaiden Sigma next month.

You see, Sony Europe still has no idea when we can expect PS3 taster or full game here, telling Eurogamer this afternoon that it was still waiting for information.

Meanwhile Famitsu has announced the demo will be released across North America and Japan on 27th April, ahead of the title's scheduled launch in June.

It is rumoured to include a specially created chapter that won't be in the full game, which will give you access to many of the game's weapons early on.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is the PlayStation 3 version of the popular shuriken-slinging game for Xbox, Ninja Gaiden: Black. Creator Tecmo recently shouted at the Internet insisting that it was much more than a port.

Apparently the whole package has had an overhaul, from graphics and performance, to content and bouncy boobs.

It should prove itself to be an essential purchase when it eventually makes its way to Europe. Mercilessly attack our Ninja Gaiden Xbox review to see why.

No current plans for 80GB PS3

Sony has told Eurogamer this afternoon that it currently has no plans to produce an 80GB PS3, despite emerging reports that it filed with the FCC for the model.

"The 80GB we're not making a comment on, but we don't have any plans at the moment," a spokesperson for Sony Europe told us.

Rumours began after the company filed with the US Federal Communications Comission to request a class II permissive change to reflect some Bluetooth tweaks to the console. Among the models listed for this were the currently available 20GB and 60GB offerings, as well as a new 80GB model.

It does, of course, follow yesterday's news that Microsoft will be introducing a new black Xbox 360 Elite with an HDMI port and 120GB sometime in the late summer.

We find it a touch bizarre that Sony would only go as high as 80GB, especially considering Ken Kutaragi's past comments of wanting to hit the 250GB storage size. Then again, you can just buy a regular PC hard disk and put it in the PS3 anyway.

FEAR PS3 confirmed for April

Vivendi's PlayStation 3 version of F.E.A.R. will be released on 20th April, the publisher confirmed this afternoon.

Originally scheduled for release at the console's launch last Friday, the game, which is about men with guns investigating the unknown, was set back for reasons unknown. Someone give me a gun.

That reminds me - there's a rapid-fire shotgun in your PS3 arsenal that isn't included in the PC and Xbox 360 versions, as well as "a bonus mission that lets the player jump into the shoes of the Special Force Operational Detachment (SFOD) soldiers that investigated the original Armacham disturbance - basically the incident that was the trigger for the events of FEAR". Thanks Rob Loftus, senior producer at Sierra! Got anything else to say? "We won't be changing the plotline, but we'll certainly be adding to it with the bonus mission. You'll get to see what happened to the SFOD squad that the FEAR team is trying to locate in the original storyline."

Marvellous. So there's 16 player deathmatch over the Internet at launch? "Yes." And the Instant Action arcade mode that involves surviving and causing loads of damage in repeating levels and then uploading your score to PS Network leaderboards? "We don't support SixAxis in this current iteration of F.E.A.R." Eh? It's almost as though he's talking to someone else. In a Q&A provided along with the release date.

Any chance of more F.E.A.R. on PS3? The Extraction Point PC expansion, perhaps? "Stay tuned. It all depends on the demand. If people want some more FEAR on the PS3, we'll certainly look at ways to make that happen."

Well that's jolly good of you. Meanwhile, PS3 fans might want to hold their noses and read the F.E.A.R. Xbox 360 review elsewhere on Eurogamer to get an idea of how the console ports, handled by Day 1 Studios, have come together. Alternatively, there's F.E.A.R. PS3 first impressions. What more could you want?

Valve: PS3 Online is 'Kind of Scary'

Looking to Electronic Arts to hold their hand.

Later this year, Team Fortress 2 ends up on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, gamers will have the chance to jump online (though not necessarily against one another), and while Valve's already established in the PC space with Steam and worked with Microsoft on several Xbox products, Sony's world is alien to them.

Valve's head of marketing Doug Lombardi explained to Game Informer why they're hoping Electronic Arts, who's helping them develop the PS3 port while Valve maintains the Xbox 360 and PC versions internally, will guide them to the other side.

"PS3 is brand new and PS3's online is kind of scary so we're hoping that EA is going to be a strong partner for us. (laughs) It's always the scariest thing when it's not all yours. With the PC it's all ours, Steam is all ours, code's ours, game's ours. On 360 we're making it, we've made it before, we know what the Live thing is, although it's Microsoft's so we kind of know it. PS3 we're not building it, we haven't made a PS3 title before, and we don't really know what PS3 online really is. It's always the devil you don't know that you're the most scared of."

With EA's backing, however, PS3 owners shouldn't worry -- Team Fortress 2 on PS3 should be just as capable as it will be on every other platform it appears on in 2007.

Eidos "No Ps3 games untill second half of 2008"

Eidos has confirmed that it won't be releasing most of its major PS3 titles until next year, stating that the console's installed base will not be high enough before then.

As part of a statement released alongside the company's interim results for the six months ended December 31 2006, CEO Jane Cavanagh said, "We believe that PlayStation 3 will be a successful platform, and are developing technology and products for this console.

"However, as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date."

The six month results reveal a rise in revenues for Eidos from GBP 50.1 million to during the same period last year to GBP 74.5 million. Losses stand at GBP 17.9 million - down by GBP 2 million year-on-year.

Cavanagh said that the board of directors also believes the Xbox 360 and Wii will be successful, with Eidos's first titles for Nintendo's machine due out this spring.

"The board believes that the introduction of new consoles will drive strong demand and pricing over the next five years," Cavanagh continued.

"In addition, the increasing opportunities for digital sales to consumers, through PC downloads as well as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, provide the basis for improved margins."

The statement observed that Eidos enjoyed two UK number one hits in the second half of last year with Just Cause and Battlestations Midway, and highlighted the GBP 44 million deal with Warner Bros. that was signed in December.

It also confirmed that the first products from Eidos's new casual games division will be launched in the first six months of 2008, following the acquisition of developer Rockpool Games.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Voice Cast Announced

Who will play Snake?

Konami announced today that the voice of Snake, David Hayter, will be returning to the role for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PS3. Hayter will provide the voice or the game's aging and worn-out Solid Snake, appeasing the demands of fanboys everywhere.

Hayter will be joined by a cast of returning voice actors such as Quinton Flynn, Paul Eiding, and Christopher Randolph, who will reprise their work as Raiden, Roy Campbell, and Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, respectively. In addition to his work as a voice actor, Hayter has made a name for himself as the screenwriter of the first two X-Men feature films (not the abysmal X3), as well as the rumored 324-page screenplay for The Watchmen film adaptation.

"I couldn't be more excited about this game. What I've seen of Metal Gear Solid 4 has absolutely blown me away. To bring the focus of the story back to Solid Snake, and to work with Kris Zimmerman and many of the amazing actors that provided iconic voices for the previous games, is like coming home," said Hayter. "I'm so proud and grateful to have been involved with Mr. Kojima as the voice of Snake, for nearly a decade, on this legendary video game series. This game is going to plunge players into the ultimate Metal Gear experience. And personally, I can't wait to play it."

On March 29, David Hayter will be appearing as a special guest on The Kojima Productions Report podcast to discuss his work on the game. The podcast is available on the official Kojima Productions website, and via the iTunes music store.
