PS3 Folding@home app soon

Sony has announced that PlayStation 3's next firmware update will arrive at the end of March - and one of the key additions will be integration with Stanford University's Folding@home programme.

First announced last summer, the Folding@home PS3 application will be accessible from the CrossMediaBar (XMB), allowing you to join the race to understand protein folding, misfolding and related diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cystic fibrosis and various cancers.

It will also be possible to set the Folding application to run automatically when the system is idle.

Sony's decision to support distributed computing projects like Folding@home, which shares the burden of simulating complex protein folding across many thousands of computers, isn't entirely motivated by goodwill, mind you - it also happens to be a good way of promoting the console's CELL processor, as Sony's Masayuki Chatani hastened to note.

"In order to study protein folding, researchers need more than just one super computer, but the massive processing power of thousands of networked computers. Previously, PCs have been the only option for scientists," he explained, "but now, they have a new, more powerful tool - PS3."

Sony says it will continue to support distributed computing projects, although rumours that a Monkey Shakespeare Simulator app is round the corner are made up.

Major League Baseball 2K7 (PS3)

The visuals are impressive, but only when not being compared directly with the Xbox 360 version's. The 360 version has richer colors and will upscale to take advantage of a 1080p display, while the PS3 version is locked in at 720p. On a high-end display, it's easy to see that the PS3 version's visuals are washed out and far less well-defined than you'll find on the Xbox 360 version. The parks are accurately modeled, down to the individual scoreboards, adverts and even the concession areas. The crowds still don't look particularly next-gen to us, though, but accurately modeling a stadium full of people may still be a generation away. We also encountered occasional bouts of slowdown, which when combined with random latency issues online could sometimes become annoying.

While it's up to you to determine what your favorite baseball game will be this year, it's a safe bet to say that you'll have a good time playing this one. If you own a PS3 and an Xbox 360, then go ahead and opt for the 360 version. It has better online support, sharper visuals and richer colors. But if you only own a PlayStation 3, rest assured that you'll enjoy this version anyways.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma details

Throwing handfuls of shurikens this morning was Tecmo, who insisted that the PlayStation 3's Ninja Gaiden Sigma was much more than a port of the 2005 Xbox hit, Ninja Gaiden: Black.

For starters, everything from backgrounds, enemies, characters, animations and textures will be revamped for the next generation console. It'll also let you partially install, or fully install the game on the PS3 hard drive to help loading times. All this and it's promised to run at a consistent 60 FPS with full self-shadowing and in 720p.

There's ninja-buckets of new content, too. Sigma is 19 chapters long, three more than the original. Plus there's a new, even harder difficulty mode for those of you with ridiculous gaming know-how.

However, most of the new changes are for the freshly playable Rachel, who will have a completely separate catalogue of attacks and animations, new story missions and mission-mode levels, as well as the sort of jiggly body-parts only Team Ninja can integrate.

Ninja Gaiden: Black was a deluxe edition of the original game for Xbox, which included the Ninja Dog and Master Ninja expansions, plus lots of new content and features. It's hard to recommend a game more highly, but pop over to our Ninja Gaiden review to see us try.
