Analyst slashes PS3 shipment forecast

Component shortages could mean just 3 million units by March 2007

Japanese brokerage Mitsubishi UJF Securities has lowered its rating on Sony, predicting a 50 per cent shortfall in the company's launch estimates for the PS3 which sent the share price down 3 per cent.

According to a report on Reuters, the analyst believes that component shortages - such as those which plagued Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch last year - will mean that Sony is unable to manufacture anything like the number of consoles planned in the short term.

"In the medium term this would mean that it would take longer for Sony to recover its huge investment in PS3 and thus we are downgrading the stock," stated Masahiko Ishino, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities analyst.

Shares in the company fell by 3.2 per cent on the announcement, investors wary of Sony's ability to deliver on its shipment forecast for the PlayStation 3.

The news comes just days after the platform holder clarified its November launch plans, forecasting 2 million units for the launch, with a further 2 million by the end of the calendar year.

Full scale production of the console - which is based on the advanced Cell Processor and Blu-ray DVD technology - has yet to begin, casting further doubt on the company's ability to deliver on its ambitious launch promises.

Sony PS3 Q+A

Playstation 3 / E3 2006 QA

- PS3 is a computer system

- PS3 is one product with different configuration

- PS3 launch date : Nov 11 (Japan)' date=' Nov 17 (US/Europe)

- PS3 price : 20GB : JPY 59,800, USD499, EUR499 (incl. VAT) / 60GB : JPY Open, USD599, EUR599 (incl. VAT)[/quote']

Εurogamer: GC: Valve opens up in Leipzig

a_med_ep1.jpg

Half-Life 2: Episode Two and its three-game entourage - on three platforms - has slipped until Q1 2007. February, we're told.

But if you ever really expected to play it this year you were probably kidding yourself anyway. Fortunately it's sounding really rather good - a technological improvement thanks to the license new areas have afford Valve to work on new art assets, and one with lots of new enemies and vehicles among other things. Speaking to Eurogamer at Leipzig's Game Convention, Valve's Doug Lombardi spoke candidly on release date, price, the background to the re-emergence of Team Fortress 2, and how - if things had been different - the Portal gun might even have wound up in Half-Life 2 in the first place.

Eurogamer: Episode Two is out in Q1 next year now, right?

Doug Lombardi: Yes that's right.

Eurogamer: Originally you said you'd hoped to get it ready this year. Is there a particular reason you had to change that?

Doug Lombardi: No, it's just sort of classic Valve being overly aggressive on our dates. But we're aiming for Q1 right now and we're really far along in the playtest stage. You know, our thing is always that we're trying to make really good experiences and so we're going to manage to that rather than the schedule.

Eurogamer: Obviously you're doing this simultaneously on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as PC, which is quite a big thing for you guys to do.

Doug Lombardi: Yeah. Our traditional model has been we release on the PC and then somewhere in the next five years or something it'll make it to a console, and we're finding out that there's parity between the PC and the next-gen systems, so we're able to deliver the same great experience on all three platforms. We're working together with EA to extend the initial launch - we're working on the 360 version and the PC version, and we're collaborating with them and some of their studios on the PS3 version - to deliver everything at the same time.

..........

ναι μεν, αλλα...

θα βγει το HL2 στο PS3, αλλα οχι απο τη Valve..

ki ekei pou i mera mou den pigene kala, vlepo auto kai mou ftiaxnei to kefi apo ta gelia

Microsoft today dealt a huge blow to the PS3 by announcing that both FIFA 2007 and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 will be exclusive to the 360 for 12 months, meaning that the PS3 will currently only have World Tour Soccer in the football games department.

While this news may not bother some people, it will dramatically affect the sales of both consoles in Europe where Pro Evolution Soccer 5 and FIFA 2006 are both in the top 5 games charts nearly a year after release.

This news isn't all bad though. The exclusive deal is only for 12 months and only affects next-gen consoles, meaning the PS2, PC, DS and PSP versions of both games are still set to be released. Not mentioned was how this deal will affect the Winning Eleven series, the Japanese version of Pro Evolution Soccer.

With two of the highest selling franchises gone, Sony is set to lose a lot of sales and considering how many European 17 – 25 years olds play these games, possibly an entire demographic of customers. Can Sony win them back somehow or is the PS3 dead at the starting gate?

EDIT: It appears Microsoft has mislead us again, in exactly the same way they did with GTA4.The official press release states:

"LEIPZIG, Germany — Aug. 23, 2006 — Once again proving that its game platforms offer more ways for gamers to have fun, Microsoft Corp. today announced great new games and accessories for Xbox 360™ and Windows® gamers. Delivering on the worldwide demand for Xbox 360, Xbox Live® and Games for Windows, Microsoft revealed key additions to its Windows Vista™ showcase library and Xbox 360 titles today at the 2007 Games Convention in Leipzig. In addition to announcing new European-centric board games for the hugely successful Xbox Live Arcade on Xbox Live, the premier online gaming service, Microsoft announced that the next generation of soccer will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 console this year. With “FIFA 07” from Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) and “Pro Evolution Soccer 6” from Konami Digital Entertainment Inc., Xbox 360 will be the only place where gamers can enjoy next generation soccer this year."

What this means is that FIFA 07 is only exclusive because it was never officially announced for PS3 and that there will be no PES6 on the PS3 in 2006. There is no deal between Microsoft, EA and Konami, Microsoft just pointed out the facts in a way that makes it seem they have an exclusivity deal.

Therefore, FIFA 07 could still be released on the PS3 in 2006 and PES6 is only exclusive to 360 until the start of 2007 (although I doubt that's due to a deal, it was probably just never planned to be on the PS3 at launch, which suggests that the PS3 will have a re-worked version), meaning that on January 1st 2007, the PS3 could have both FIFA 07 and PES6.

You can see the press release for yourself here

It seems that once again, Microsoft has tried to trick us all into posting fake news with the wording of their announcements, I suggest you all uninstall Windows and burn down their nearest offices.
