EGM has awarded Virtua Fighter 5 on the PS3 the prestigious honour of game of the month, scoring an insanely high overall mark of 9.5. Looks like Crackdown has some strong competition on its hands. Interestingly, this is the HIGHEST score EGM has awarded over the past six months.

PlayStation 3 enjoys record pre-orders

Advance orders for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console have broken all records, with high street stalwart Woolworths revealing it has been taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week.

The state-of-the-art PlayStation 3 will go head-to-head with Microsoft's Xbox 360 when it hits the shops on March 23 and Woolies, one of the first stores to accept pre-orders, has admitted it has been staggered by the demand.

Gerry Berkley, Woolworths' head of games, said, "It's the hottest gaming system since the PS2 launched in 2000 - demand will outstrip supply."

With a retail price of £425, the 60Gb PlayStation 3 costs £125 more in the UK than in the US, but this has failed to deter those determined to try out Sony's latest dream machine.

ID SOFTWARE CONFIRMS ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS FOR NEXT-GENERATION CONSOLES

The war between the GDF and Strogg will soon be igniting on next-generation consoles as id Software and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today confirmed that Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars™, the team-based first person action title, and already one of the most anticipated new properties of 2007 is coming to next-gen platforms. In this epic multiplayer-focused game, players can choose to defend humanity as a part of the Global Defense Force (GDF) or destroy it as a merciless Strogg alien invader. Under the executive production of id Software, Nerve Software is developing Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, while Z-Axis is the developer for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.

“We're pleased to be working with Nerve and Z-Axis to bring the highly-anticipated gameplay from Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars to the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.

Winner of more than 15 awards in 2006 and already selected as one of the most anticipated new titles in 2007 by more than eight publications, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars is being developed for the Windows PC by Splash Damage – the Nerve Software and Z-Axis console versions will also feature strategic team play, persistent character promotions and online stats tracking. Players choose to battle as one of five unique classes in either the conventionally armed GDF army or the futuristic Strogg invasion force, each outfitted with specialist weapons and combat hardware. In this adrenaline pumping fight for survival, warring forces utilize a variety of different vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems including quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to unleash airborne attacks. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the opponent. Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars features 16-player battles on the console systems, delivering the ultimate team-and objective-based multiplayer experience.

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Sony's UK head of sales resigns

Jowett to pursue new opportunities outside of games industry

A spokesperson for SCE UK has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that sales boss Kevin Jowett has left the company to look for new opportunities elsewhere.

The confirmation came after trade publication MCV reported that Jowett had resigned, and had left Sony immediately for reasons of confidentiality.

Speaking to GI.biz Sony's David Wilson said, "He's resigned to pursue new opportunities outside of the industry."

He added, "We wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

Jowett became sales director in 1998 and is a well-known figure in the industry, particularly within the retail community. It's not yet clear how his resignation might affect Sony's plans for the European launch of PlayStation 3, which is now less than six weeks away.

Yosuke Hayashi: no loading screens in Ninja Gaiden Sigma

The folks from CVG were able to sit down with the director of Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Yosuke Hayashi. Game details were revealed, a progress report was sort of given, and the director was surprisingly hands off when it came to commenting on the PS3's sales performance.

When asked about how far along in development the game is, Hayashi informs that it's at around 50 percent. He says that "the mountain-top [they're] aiming to reach is now within sight" and that their development team is no longer a stranger to the PS3 platform. He reassures that their team can handle the PS3 much better than before and things are going pretty well.

When asked how different Ninja Gaiden on the PS3 will be from Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox, Hayashi says that what they did was like adopting a totally new design and specification for a car. He explains, "It's going to be endless if I start counting the differences from the original. It's not that we simply added something to it but more like we have improved the car's engine."

As for taking advantage of the PlayStation Network, Hayashi informs that through PSN players will be able to compare worldwide scores and rankings. Hayashi also says that due to the PS3's hard disk, players won't be bothered with loading screens while playing Ninja Gaiden: Sigma.

As for the rumor that Ninja Gaiden: Sigmawill also be available for the Xbox 360, Hayashi says: "I would take that rumour as proof that people's expectations for Sigma must be very high. But it is just a rumour." Finally, Hayashi's take on the PS3's performance so far? We'll let Hayashi's words deliver the message to you folks. He says:

I am not an analyst. I'm just a game developer. My mission is to provide the best action game for PS3 users. That's all that matters to me, and I promise that you'll experience something really fantastic with Sigma.
