Sony Profits Fall, But End of Year Forecast Raises

Sonyʼs net profits for the three months to 31 December fell to 159.9bn yen ($1.3bn; £669m) from 168.9bn yen the three months before, a drop in 5.3%. The huge losses were down to the gaming unit, which is currently launching the Playstation 3 around the world.

Losses from the gaming division were too large to offset a profitable quarter from the electronics division, which was driven by strong flat panel sales. Despite posting a loss for this quarter Sony has raised its forecasts for this quarter to 60bn yen, compared with their previous forecast of 50bn yen.

"As a result of the strong performance of the electronics segment during the third quarter, operating results for the segment are trending higher than anticipated at the time of our previous forecast," the company said.

Unreal Tournament May Still Support Console MODs

Free, user-generated content for online shooter could still happen.

Part of what makes first-person-shooters on the PC so appealing is the ability for aspiring designers, artists and programmers to develop their own character models, levels, weapons and whatever else their mind can conjure up, often times using the same tools the developers themselves did. That's never been possible on consoles, but Epic Games has indicated in the past this is part of their goal for Unreal Tournament 3 -- first on PlayStation 3 and PC and now, it seems, on Xbox 360, too.

Speaking to Game Informer, Epic's VP Mark Rein discussed why the company had forgone announcing an Xbox 360 version of the game until just recently. "One of our big concerns was the ability to bring mods to the platform, and it's still a bit of an open issue, but we've had some pretty clear indications that we'll be able to do it, and we're pretty excited about that," he says. "That was kind of the one thing, we wanted to make sure we'd be able to bring user-created content to the platform before we made a firm commitment to it."

Previously, Epic previously stated this was already in the cards for the PS3 version (and PC, natch), and appears to have been part of the hold up on confirming an Xbox 360 title, even though we're willing to be it's actually been in development for some time already. The difference between PlayStation Network and Xbox Live is companies can reportedly add content to Sony's service without a series of certifications, a common criticism directed at Microsoft, which delayed the release of demos, game patches and other content.

Back in September, Epic held a Q&A session during the Tokyo Game Show, where Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney outlined the situation pretty clearly: "Unfortunately it's [Xbox Live] more of a closed platform," and says they've even been "quite negative toward user-created content."

Through Microsoft's XNA initiatives, perhaps Epic's found a way to get Microsoft to loosen up a bit, or maybe Epic will package user modifications and offer them on the XBL marketplace. That'd be an easy enough microtransaction, wouldn't it? But that wouldn't be particularly fair for console owners, considering the PC kids wouldn't have to pay a dime.

Plenty of questions in need of answering, and hopefully it'll all become clearer in the coming months. Unreal Tournament 2007 doesn't ship till much later this year.

Sony Expands PlayStation Spot

PS3 and PSP services merge into one.

First there was the PlayStation Portable, and with it came PlayStation Spot, a retail download service offering game demo downloads for PSP owners.

Next came the PlayStation 3, and with it came PlayStation TV, a retail kiosk designed to let Japanese audiences sample the PS3's games and multimedia capabilities.

If you were one of the three people in America wondering if Sony would ever combine these two promotions into one, wonder no more! Starting 1/30, Sony has started making PlayStation TV terminals function as PlayStation Spot terminals. This means demo and item downloads for your PSP from the same place where you can sample upcoming PS3 games. That's, like, totally radical and cool!

Currently, Sony has 70 PlayStation TV locations set up for PlayStation Spot functionality. The company plans on eventually expanding to the full 1,035 network of PS3 kiosks

PS3 Rumble Fixed?

SplitFish says it has the answer.

A company called SplitFish claims that it has solved the problem regarding the PlayStation 3's lack of rumble functionality. The company claims that its "dynamic force feedback system" can be used with the PlayStation 3's SIXAXIS controller without interrupting its motion sensing abilities. Its low power force feedback technology is called SensorFX and uses no moving parts to produce the feedback. Its feedback will work across the entirety of the controller, allowing feedback to be focused on one side or the other if necessary.

SplitFish says that its SensorFX technology can be sold as either an add-on for existing controllers or be imbedded into new designs. The add-on for the SIXAXIS plugs into the USB plug on the controller and uses the controller's battery for power.

The SensorFX has two different feedback modes. One mode is for use with games that feature built-in force feedback support, while the other uses the motion tilt functionality and button use to determine feedback actions. SplitFish claims that it will work with developers publishers in an effort to make the best use of its technology.

den ksero... arage me patchaki mporei na prostethei rumble se ena paixnidi?

Sony Begins 65nm CELL CPU Production For PS3

According to ITMEdia, SCE has begun to produce the upgraded 65nm CELL CPU. All PS3 units so far have had the 90nm CELL, but this will change soon. This also means Sony will profit more per PS3 unit because the 65nm CELL CPU is cheaper.
