Heavenly Sword article from Game daily

The "one-man-against-an-army" scenario has been overdone in all forms of media. If it wasn't about the movies, where Steven Seagal and Bruce Willis have taken on terrorists and other evil forces by their lonesome, then it's certainly present in a few video games, where the player takes control of a lone force who will, by themselves, change the balance of what the bad guys are up to. Before we got our hands on Heavenly Sword for the PlayStation 3, it was all about the one-man army that was Kratos, a vicious, blood-thirsty warmonger who wanted revenge on a war god and did everything possible with his twin blades to complete his journey. But now that we've gotten introduced to the likes of Nariko and her incredible fighting techniques, we're not so sure. The God of War may even find himself challenged with this woman.

Credit Ninja Theory, an up-and-coming development team who was last known as Just Add Monsters when they created the crazy fighting/party game Kung Fu Chaos for the Xbox. Heavenly Sword is completely different from that development, but the same tone of care and devotion to the content continues to be in check. Working off of more advanced hardware, Ninja Theory certainly seems to be up to task with the content at hand, crafting a beautiful game that means business on the gameplay front as well.

Ninja Theory actually worked alongside Andy Serkis, the actor who was the model for various Peter Jackson films, including the big guy himself in King Kong and the mischievious Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Serkis not only lent a hand in the story's development, writing, and casting, but also lent his performance capture prowess to the game, playing the tyrant-like king who makes Nariko's life such a living hell. The result could definitely be a primary reason to purchase a PS3 in the fall, despite its high price tag.

In the game, you take control of Nariko, a young, beautiful, fire-blooded woman who finds herself in quite a dilemma. A vicious King has ravaged her land and destroyed the warrior clan that was hand-picked to protect a dangerous blade known as the Heavenly Sword. The reason for the sword's protection is its devastating power. See, it's a sword that was originally wielded by an almighty diety, and cannot be held by a mere mortal without killing them. It uses the holder's life-force in order to keep its energy alive. Nariko, however, is out of options, and when she finds the warriors defeated, including her father, she takes it upon herself to go upon the sacrifical mission. She picks up the sword and proceeds to go after the king and his army, hellbent on bringing them to their knees before her life force succumbs.

The game takes place over a series of battles with the king's thugs, and with that, the action picks up plenty. Throughout each battle you'll find yourself challenged by tougher and tougher thugs, and after you defeat so many, you'll find yourself facing off against a skillful boss who isn't quite that easy to defeat, and has their own weapons and attack methods that make them a force to be reckoned with. Fortunately, you have a few tools of the trade that allow you to get the edge on your competition, and it's not all about the Heavenly Sword. There's other things that come into play.

For instance, Nariko has three different battle styles/stances that she can use, and not only can she use the Heavenly Sword for attacks, she can also use twin blades that can allow her to dispatch of enemies quickly. The enemies and stages themselves can also boast weapons, as you can throw tables and debris against opponents, as well as bodies of those you have brought down. You're also able to launch enemies into the environmental settings, so if you see fit to throw a foe through a wall, the only thing that's stopping you is not performing the right motion. Fortunately, with the game's easy-to-pick-up gameplay, that's hardly a problem.

Although the video trailer for the game shows it to be a complex piece, it's actually a blast to play. Whether you're unleashing a devastating combo on an enemy or taking part in an aerial battle where you unwind an opponent and watch them fall to a limp and painful death, there's a system here that seems to work rather well for Nariko's tactics. Credit the attack styles for being accessible and stylish at the same time, managing to pack some techniques into the combos without becoming devastatingly complex. There's also a counter system here where Nariko can counter an enemy's attack, therefore setting up her own counter-attack that's all the sweeter once it's pulled off. And as Nariko fights on, she can build up a power meter, and, once full, she can pull off an even more devastating attack with the Heavenly Sword that'll rip even the mightiest boss a new one.

Nariko's attack styles also deserve a bit of note. Along with the sword, Nariko can find other weapons to her credit. I mentioned the debris and the fallen bodies and the twin spears, but the Heavenly Sword itself has a few cool techniques, and you can also find bazookas that will help you clear away waves of enemies. Granted, it's kind of weird stumbling upon a bazooka in older times of battle, but, hey, whatever comes in handy for pushing your devastation ahead, right?

As you proceed with each of your battles, the story within the game continues to unfold, as you learn more about the king's motives and why he has such a hatred for the clan that was protecting the Sword. A hint of jealousy, perhaps? Or has he found a way to wield the sword's power without falling to its life-sucking powers? We'll probably learn more about this as the game arrives on shelves, but we're in for an epic tale of storytelling to back up all the frenetic action.

Now, let's talk graphics. They are BEAUTIFUL. As you might have seen from a trailer for the game, detail is through the roof, with the king actually looking like a barren, frustrated person in a movie. Nariko doesn't quite have the same realism, but is a stunning beauty all the same. The other characters also look terrific, with animation that's very detailed, even in battle. Watching enemies flop to the ground after you've carved them a new one in different ways is a nice touch, and shows some creativity on Ninja Theory's part. The environments are also massive and show lots of places to throw people around, and can crumble apart with just the right amount of damage. Like Warhawk before it, Heavenly Sword is a showcase for the PS3's processing power, and that will be one of its strongest points, especially for those who have an HDTV and can just see the detail oozing out.

The sound also seems to be up to par thus far. Featuring music that's very true to the theme of the game and voicework and sound effects that capture the ambience of the spirit of war (Serkis' King sounds pretty pissed off thus far), it seems to be coming together nicely. One can only imagine how well this kicks in in stereo.

Heavenly Sword isn't quite the perfect sword just yet. We haven't seen too many of the game environments, so it's questionable as to how much they'll really change in the final game. There are some slight camera issues that need a little working on, something I'm sure that Ninja Theory will tweak. And then there's the question of multiplayer. We know that the game will pack a meaty solo-player quest, but would it be out of the question to have some kind of co-op or versus multiplayer matches, where the fights can REALLY get out of hand? I suppose I might be asking a bit much here, but, hey, two Heavenly Swords can be better than one.

Regardless, Heavenly Sword looks to be a captivating effort from Ninja Theory and Andy Serkis, and should be one of the better games to hit shelves later this year. Its gameplay techniques should keep the game fresh for some time, and the presentation looks to bring out the best in the PS3. Now it's just a matter of seeing how much *expletive deleted* Nariko can kick in the final product. I'm sure Kratos is slightly shaking in his boots, even with God of War II on the horizon. We'll be back with more coverage on Heavenly Sword very soon, complete with new screens, videos, and, of course, the eventual review. But Ninja Theory seems to know what kind of *expletive deleted*-kicking good time we want, and they're delivering on almost every accord thus far.

We have recently decided to cancel the Endless Saga project. Endless Saga was one of our ambitious development projects to enter into the next generation console market. However, after some rigorous development effort, we found the gameplay of Endless Saga to be short of innovation and creativity we seek to achieve in online gaming space."

We still have a plan to enter into PS3 market and I'll let you know when we're prepared to bring something more valuable and fun to PS3 gamers."

THQ Cancels Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007 for the PS3

http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3491&Itemid=2

Following various online rumors, the company issued a statement, saying that the game will not appear until late 2007. No explanation was given for the cancellation, though it may be that the firm sees PS3 as offering too few consumers, at too high a demographic, with too high development costs.

The statement read, "The next installment in our perennial SmackDown franchise is slated for release across multiple game systems this holiday. The highly anticipated WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 is scheduled to ship for Xbox 360, PSP and PlayStation 2 in November. Consistent with our goal of delivering the highest quality content across all next-gen platforms, we have decided to postpone the debut of the SmackDown series on PlayStation 3 until the holiday 2007 timeframe."

Report: Developers are Steering Away from PS3

There's never been a company that has dominated the video game business for three straight console generations. Can Sony pull it off? It's not looking good as the high price seems to be putting off not only prospective consumers but also developers, and that could be a vicious circle.

Is Sony's PlayStation 3 in trouble before it even launches? Sony has been the undisputed champion of the last two console generations, towering over the competition, but now it seems like every analyst, developer and industry pundit is placing a laser sight directly on Sony's forehead.

The biggest problem would appear to be the pricing for the system. Even the lower priced $500 SKU is expensive, and $600 seems ridiculous to most. Ever since Sony revealed this pricing strategy at this year's E3, the company has been put on the defensive, arguing that it's a "computer" and that with the inclusion of a high-def Blu-ray player it's really a "bargain."

Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer himself has admitted that the console is expensive and that consumers are paying for its "potential." In the PS3's native Japan, the reaction has been less than pleasant, with more than 90 percent of developers in a recent survey stating that the price of the console is just too high. And indeed it seems that this high price is affecting whether or not certain developers decide to develop for the PS3. Sony's PlayStation business has always been backed by incredibly strong third-party support, but now for the first time that could be in jeopardy.

According to a BusinessWeek Online report, some developers are actually steering resources away from the PS3 in favor of the more affordable Wii from Nintendo and even the Xbox 360. Hirokazu Hamamura, president of publisher and game industry researcher Enterbrain, believes that Sony's next-gen console might not be a smash hit the way previous PlayStation systems have been. "Many developers think the console's initial high price will lead to slow sales and are holding off on creating games for Sony," Hamamura explained.

"At its autumn games preview on July 13, for instance, traditional Sony ally Electronic Arts spent far more time showing off innovative Nintendo games than it did titles for the PS3," emphasized BusinessWeek. "EA announced six Nintendo Wii launch titles and showed long working demos for two of those. But it offered only a short clip of a car-racing game for PS3. EA says it's still testing the potential of the PS3."

Ultimately, developers and analysts agree that in order for the PS3 to be a success in the long run, Sony will have no choice but to bring the cost of the system down as fast as possible. "It's likely Sony will have to discount more...and faster" than planned, commented JP Morgan analyst Hiroshi Takada.
