Takasu Says PS3 Game Titles Must Sell 500,000 to make a profit

Namco Bandai's Takasu Says PS3 Game Titles Must Sell 500,000

By Masaki Kondo

Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Namco Bandai Holdings Inc., Japan's second-biggest maker of video-game software, must sell at least half a million copies of a game for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 console to make money on the title, said President Takeo Takasu.

Graphics for the high-definition games cost about 1 billion yen ($8.6 million) to create, more than double that for Nintendo Co.'s Wii titles, Takasu said in a Tokyo interview Nov. 28.

``We have to sell at least 500,000 copies per title worldwide to make a profit on PlayStation 3 games,'' said Takasu. He said titles for the new Sony console are ``selling well.''

Shortages of the PlayStation 3 may also make it more difficult for software makers to sell enough games. Tokyo-based Sony halved shipment targets for the console this year and delayed the European release amid a dearth for some parts. The company may have missed its goal of shipping 400,000 consoles in the U.S. earlier this month, according to analysts including Jeetil Patel at Deutsche Bank Securities in San Francisco.

``Game makers may hesitate to make games for a console if its shipment is being delayed,'' said Yuuki Sakurai, who helps manage $6.02 billion at Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Tokyo. ``Some game makers may wait until a console becomes popular because of increasing production costs.''

Tokyo-based Namco Bandai expects games for the consoles introduced this month by Sony and Nintendo and a year ago by Microsoft Corp. to account for 10 percent of software sales, or 3.15 million units, this fiscal year ending March 31, Takasu said. The company sold about 26,000 titles for Microsoft's Xbox 360 last year, when it was introduced.

Namco Bandai developed two titles, the ``Ridge Racer'' car racing series and the latest ``Gundam'' shooting game, for Sony's PlayStation 3's Japan debut on Nov. 11, and will introduce four titles for Nintendo's Wii this weekend. The Wii offers a motion- sensor controller without high-definition graphics.

Shares of Namco Bandai fell 0.3 percent to 1,734 yen as of 1 p.m. on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

EA CEO says holiday sales met forecast

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) CEO Larry Probst said on Wednesday that initial shipments of Sony Corp.'s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) new PlayStation 3 have been below his expectations due to shortages, though overall holiday sales thus far of video games and players were at or slightly ahead of targets.

His comments at the Reuters Media Summit in New York pushed down shares of EA, the world's biggest video game publisher, by nearly 2 percent.

Probst said demand for Sony's much-anticipated PlayStation 3 (PS3), which made its U.S. debut on November 17 for the critical holiday season, was strong but a shortage of supply meant that only about 200,000 units of the game console were sold at retail outlets.

Sony had originally aimed to ship 400,000 PS3 units for its U.S. launch, and has not given actual figures.

Probst said that EA had set a lower bar for initial shipments, but "where they ended up was a bit of a surprise."

By the end of 2006, he expects Sony to ship 500,000 to 800,000 units.

"We think they'll get into that range," said Probst, who noted that console sales and corresponding game sales were typically slow to begin with because of supply constraints, and a clear winner will not be known for as long as five years.

This holiday season is crucial for the $30 billion global video game industry. Video game makers reap more than half of their annual sales in the end-year shopping season.

EA, whose games include titles like football game "Madden" and "The Sims," recently raised its 2006 outlook to call for flat to 5 percent growth in overall U.S. game sales. Previously, it expected overall sales to be flat to down 5 percent in 2006.

"That's a much more optimistic outlook for the year than people were previously expecting," Probst said.

"Bottom line, I would say that the first holiday weekend met or slightly exceeded expectations," he added, citing solid sales of Microsoft's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Xbox 360 game console, Nintendo's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) Wii and Sony's PlayStation 2, as well as Sony's PSP and Nintendos DS handheld devices.

SUPERMAN DISAPPOINTS

Separately, EA Chief Financial Officer Warren Jenson said at an investor conference in Arizona that the game "Superman," an important holiday title that was released later than the film, was a disappointment and that sales would fall short of company targets.

Analysts said Jenson's comments also weighed on the stock.

Large crowds had camped out for days ahead of the PS3's U.S. debut. Supplies were scarce, and Probst said some 20,000 owners were able to flip their new machines on Web auction site eBay Inc. (EBAY.O: Quote, Profile, Research) for, on average, more than double the $600 price.

EA's shares fell 1.8 percent to $56.19 after Probst's comments, before recuperating some losses to close at $56.77, still down 0.8 percent on the Nasdaq.

Shares in Activision Inc. (ATVI.O: Quote, Profile, Research), the second-biggest U.S. game maker which has a smaller exposure to the PS3, fell 0.6 percent before rebounding to close up almost 2 percent at $16.58.

Ken Kutaragi - new challenges

In a carefully worded statement released earlier today, Sony Computer Entertainment Incorporated (SCEI) says that it has replaced ʽfather of the PlayStationʼ, Ken Kutaragi, as its president and CEO. Kutaragi moves upstairs to become chairman - he retain his role as CEO.

Kutaragiʼs replacement, as of December 1st, is Kaz Hirai, currently President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). Hirai's title will be President and Group COO of SCEI. His current role is taken by Jack Tretton, currently SCEA executive vice-president and co-chief operating officer.

Sonyʼs release makes a strong point that, “Ken Kutaragi will continue to oversee the entire SCE Group as chief executive officer, and will fully exercise his power to reinforce and further accelerate the development of the PlayStation business.”

'Oversee' is the key word here – it can be read as code for ʽhands-offʼ effectively meaning that Kutaragi loses day-to-day control of the division responsible for the PlayStation line up.

Bear in mind that it was only in September this year that SPOnG reported Kutaragi as saying, "If you asked me if Sony's strength in hardware was in decline, right now I guess I would have to say that might be true."

This level of control goes to Hirai who, as Sony remarks, “In his new capacity as President and Group COO of the entire SCE Group, he will bring his strong leadership skills and experience to fulfill his responsibilities as head of operations worldwide.”

Sonyʼs front bench reshuffle is obviously going to be related to ongoing PS3 launch delays and supply-line issues in all areas.

MotorStorm launch delayed

by Paul Coroneos

Bad news for importers across the globe. Off-road racer MotorStorm has had its launch date in Japan pushed back a week. MotorStorm was set to debut on December 7th, but has since been delayed due to production related issues.

The late release will have no effect on the North America launch date, which is set to be sometime in March. The primary reason Motorstorm is launching so late for the rest of the world is to allow time for developers to complete the online component of the game. Japanese gamers will receive an offline only version of the game on the 14th.
