The PlayStation 3 (PS3) will be released on November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 in the rest of the world, with two configuration plans: one with a 20GB hard drive and no HDMI connection, card reader or Wi-Fi (according to the PDF sheet specifications), the other with a 60GB hard drive and these remaining features present.

 

The console will retail for ¥59,800 for the 20GB in Japan, while the 60GB model price will be left to the retail outlet to determine (89,500 yen was suggested). In the United States, the 20GB version will retail for USD$499 while the 60GB version will do so for USD$599. Finally, in Europe the 20GB version will cost €499, and the 60GB one, €599.

In Sony's E3 conference on May 8th, 2006, it was revealed that the new, redesigned, wireless controller has a tilt sensor that allows six degrees of freedom (movement in all three spatial axis, plus pitch, roll, and yaw rotation). It also has broader analog sticks, a USB cable port at the top of the controller (utilized for connections to the PS3 and recharging), four LEDs (presumabley) for play identification, and a "guide" button on the center of the controller's face. The controller is lighter than previous DualShock controllers.

 

Cell/Tech/Blu-ray

 

The PS3 will have a 3.2 GHz Cell BE multi-core processor: PowerPC-based 'Power Processing Element' and 8 Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). The PPE has a 512 KiB L2 cache and one VMX (AltiVec) vector unit. Each of the eight SPEs is a RISC processor with 128-bit SIMD and superscalar functions. Each SPE has 256 KiB of software-addressable SRAM. Only seven SPEs are active.

 

RSX/Memory

 

Custom RSX or "Reality Synthesizer" design co-developed by NVIDIA and Sony, clocked at 550 MHz and features full high definition output (up to 1080p) x 2 channels, 128-bit pixel precision offers rendering of scenes with high dynamic range imaging, 512 MB Graphics Render Memory. Sony has hinted it may also handle audio (possibly Nvidia's Soundstorm 2).

The PS3 also has 256 MiB Rambus XDR DRAM clocked at CPU die speed (3.2 GHz) 256 MiB GDDR3 VRAM clocked at 700 MHz

The game takes place in an alternate version of 1951 England. World War II never happened, but instead you're battling against crazy monsters with coils and tubes coming out of their backs.

Heavenly Sword - SCEE

 

 

Heavenly Sword is a stunningly beautiful martial arts drama designed exclusively as a next-generation console game. The storyline concerns a girl with only a few days left to live who embarks on one final act of redemption against a king and his invading army.

 

Metal Gear Solid 4

 

A new trailer was shown during the Sony E3 press conference on May 8, 2006. It mainly focused on Snake giving a grim monologue on the state of war in the world of the future. The trailer exposes many new details about the game, such as Liquid Snake in full control of his host, Revolver Ocelot (with text displaying their name as "Liquid Ocelot"), a new FOXHOUND, as dubbed by Meryl Silverburgh, and Raiden apparently assuming the mantle of Gray Fox, as he is shown wearing a stealth camoflage suit and speaking in a forboding tone not unlike the late Gray Fox ("It's my turn to protect you.", says the "new" Raiden). The trailer also controversially depicted Solid Snake on the brink of suicide, with him placing the barrel of a gun in his mouth and, as the game footage-portion of the trailer ends, apparently pulling the trigger.

 

Kojima commented that the development team will experiment with the idea of controlling the Mk. II via remote control for reconnaissance using the Playstation Portable, although the feature might not be in the final game if it's not considered practical. The CQC system (from Metal Gear Solid 3) will make a return (an explanation will be given for Snake learning of the fighting style as part of the game's backstory) and the player will have the ability to add attachments to Snake's weapons (in addition to suppressors) with more than a hundred possible combinations.

Final Fantasy XIII

 

 

Final Fantasy XIII will run on the "White Engine", a propietary engine built for Square Enix's next-gen games. The game was originally planned for the PlayStation 2 but was later moved to the PS3 after the development team discovered the power of the platform.

 

Two other games were announced alongside Final Fantasy XIII: Final Fantasy Agito XIII, a prequel for the mobile phone, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a sequel action game for the PlayStation 3 made by the Kingdom Hearts team. The three games make up the three part saga, Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII.

In response to Microsoft's successful Xbox Live network, Sony announced a unified online service for the PlayStation 3 console at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing meeting in Tokyo. The name of the service has been given the working title of "PlayStation Network Platform" and Sony has confirmed that the service will be free and include multiplayer support. However developers are permitted to charge a subscription fee, as is common with MMO games. It is being jointly developed by Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Online Entertainment

PS3 To Use Custom Cooling System With Heat Pipes

In an interview with GameWatch of Japan, Ken Kutaragi stated that the PS3 console will use a custom cooling system with heat pipes. Kutaragi also noted that the PS3 power supply could almost be sold seperately, hinting that not only the PSU will be external but it could be pretty damn big!

In an interview with PC Impress Watch, Ken Katuragi confirmed the rumour that the console will need a large power supply.

 

"We'll use heat pipes and a custom cooling solution, but the methods used will be common," said the SCEI president. "We definitely aren't using any proprietary methods... We certainly couldn't fit a liquid cooling system [in the PS3]... We're spending a lot on heat and electromagnetic interference [management]. The power supply could almost be sold separately."
