Making VPN work with a 500 Series Speedtouch DSL

This cheat sheet attempts to clarify the process required to enable VPN on a 500 Series Speedtouch DSL Unit. While the instructions should apply to any 500 Series modem, I have only tested this on Speedtouch 530.

 

First ... Telnet vs Web Interface

 

My personal hurdle was understanding the modem could be accessed via telnet. I have always setup this particular modem using a web interface. None of the forums I read even mentioned the web interface. This made me wonder if the instructions applied to the same modem. They do! The web interface doesn't give the same amount of control as the telnet interface, which is why we will be using telnet.

 

Telnet to the device

 

The most common IP Address to telnet to is 10.0.0.138 or 192.168.1.1, however, you may have changed your modem's IP address. Open up a command prompt and type the following.

 

telnet 10.0.0.138

 

You may be asked for a username/password if there is one set up on your router (the default is no username/password). Remember this is the username/password for your modem, NOT your ISP.

 

Enter the following command at the =>

 

=> nat

 

Your prompt now becomes [nat]=>

[nat]=>

 

 

At the [nat]=> prompt enter the following commands (substitue x.x.x.x to the IP Address of the computer that will be running the VPN Server):

 

[nat]=>create protocol=gre inside_addr=x.x.x.x:1723 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:1723

[nat]=>create protocol=47 inside_addr=x.x.x.x:1 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:1

[nat]=>create protocol=50 inside_addr=x.x.x.x:1 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:1

[nat]=>create protocol=51 inside_addr=x.x.x.x:1 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:1

[nat]=>create protocol=tcp inside_addr=x.x.x.x:1723 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:1723

[nat]=>create protocol=udp inside_addr=x.x.x.x:1701 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:1701

[nat]=>create protocol=udp inside_addr=x.x.x.x:500 outside_addr=0.0.0.0:500

Exit from telnet:

 

[nat]=>exit

 

That should be all there is to it. Test your VPN connection. I'll leave setting up the actual VPN Server to another cheat sheet. (hassle me if you want to see it!)

Τουλαχιστον σε μένα το vpn των winodows είναι ασταθές. Με το openvpn σπανια εχω απώλεια σύνδεσης.

Επιπλέον μόνο ενα port ανοιχτό και encryption οσα bits θελω ...

 

Απλά λιγο δύσκολο στη πρωτη εγκατάσταση.

Δοκίμασα κι εγώ να φτιάξω vpn σε xp και ενώ μου συνδέετε κανονικά δεν μπορώ να κάνω ping στον vpn server.

Άλλος ένας υπέρ του OpenVPN. Αν μπορείτε δοκιμάστε το, «δικτυακά» είναι πολύ πιο απλό από το PPTP (1 TCP connection ή UDP stream μόνο, χωρίς «μυστήρια» πακέτα τύπου GRE) και προσφέρει σαφώς μεγαλύτερη ασφάλεια (διάφορα cipher lengths και public key encryption). Α, είναι και cross-platform ;-)
