Hellgate: London Peek

Exceptionally organized and hierarchical, Templars are unwavering in their mission to destroy evil. They retain and venerate customs and rituals passed down through the centuries, and just like their predecessors long ago who foresaw a massive demonic invasion, have trained diligently in martial disciplines and holy magic to prepare for the inevitable conflict. Cabalists study the dark arts and combine them with knowledge from the peripheries of science, seeking to use the fiends' own powers against them. They are spellcasters who summon and control the terrifying creatures and forces of the netherworld. In doing so, they frequently risk corrupting themselves.

Hunters put their faith in the most advanced weaponry they can acquire. Most are former members of elite military units and clandestine agencies; in these roles, they were accustomed to stalking extremely deadly prey, including each other. In Flagship Studios' Hellgate: London, which takes place in 2038, the titular city lies in ruins, shattered by a demon army against which nuclear and even biological armaments were almost completely ineffective. There is but one final, desperate ray of hope. It resides with factions such as these, who can face the monsters with abilities and technologies outside the realm of normal understanding.

Items

Weapons and armor are both very important to the long-term life expectancy of characters, and there will be ways to customize both. Clothing is a whole other matter, and in fact, we have separate slots for pants and shirts. We want to have a way for players to have "casual" wear they can kick around in when they're not out slaying Demons, and we're looking forward to making a TON of cool stuff for players to collect and wear.

As with everything in Hellgate: London, what you wear and wield runs through our randomization and rarity algorithms. That even includes things like pants and shirts! And yes, players can upgrade many of these items as well.

Magic

Cabalists are our main spell-casters and they use the powers of the Demons against them. Some of their spells require a Focus device to properly channel and control the dark energies of the underworld. Currently, almost all spells require the use of Power, but that is actually on the bubble right now. We may keep power costs, or we may change over to a purely "time" based system that utilizes cooldowns and casting times to throttle the power of casters.

GDC: New Hellgate trailer and screens

New footage of Flagship Studios' stellar RPG - and this one's not shaky-cam

Helping wave the PC flag at Electronic Art's GDC press reception last night was Flagship Studios' Hellgate: London.

We didn't get to spend much time with the RPG due to the abundance of PC-loving Germans in the building, but as usual it was looking in top form and certainly has plenty to be appreciated when it hits the streets this Summer.

The new trailer demonstrates the different Templars and their skills, as well as showing the sort of post-apocalyptic Tube destruction we dream of every day. Enjoy!

Hellgate: London Alpha Invites Being Sent Out

Hellgate Guru started in the middle of May, 2005. Two years and two months later, invites for the Hellgate: London alpha test started to be sent out. Thats right, members of the Hellgate: London community have reported receiving invitations. A few things to keep in mind: one, Flagship Studios is starting slow and steady to quote Ivan Sulic. This is not a major wave of invites but instead only the beginning. Two, we dont know what order the invites are being sent out in. At the moment it seems mostly random, much like with the Mythos alpha test. And three, and this is the most important part:

Its summer. Its alpha. Its time for the Hellgate: London community to kick it into high gear.

UPDATE:

Itd appear that the invites are going alphabetically. This wasnt apparent at first until we started figuring invitees email addresses (HerrStoys and WiseWolfs both start with a). Then you have alerith, aNi, and now Akuyazi has received an invite. The slow speed is due not only to the pace of the alpha but also the size of Flagship Studios database of emails submitted to HellgateLondon.com and Mythos.com. We havent gotten confirmation that the invites are being processed in alphabetical order but all indications certainly point to that as the pattern. We have yet to determine what merits an individual an invitation.
