privateer Δημοσ. 9 Φεβρουαρίου 2006 Δημοσ. 9 Φεβρουαρίου 2006 Gamecloud has an interview with EA's Louis Castle, one of the franchise's original creators, to find out more about the collection and on Command and Conquer itself. It was one of the first ever RTS games since the original game in the mid-1990s, the Command and Conquer franchise has remained one of the most popular strategy franchises in PC history. Now publisher Electronic Arts is releasing a new massive collection of most of the C&C games in Command & Conquer: The First Decade and Gamecloud got a chance to chat with EA's Louis Castle, one of the franchise's original creators, to find out more about the collection and on C&C itself. Gamecloud - First, the original Command & Conquer title was one of the first RTS games ever created. When creating the original title did you and the development team know how much of an impact the game would have in the PC game industry? Louis Castle - I don't think anyone at that time knew we were creating what was to become the biggest genre in PC gaming, but we were all gamers so we knew we were onto something big, really big. Every night for months the office was humming with the sounds of ion cannons and rocket bikes! Gamecloud - What were some of the more surprising things the original development team discovered while creating and playing the first C&C game? Louis Castle - One of the things that I found surprising is that even when you are certain you have designed every possible combination of units or strategies, minutes after letting a group of fans play, you find out you didn't find half of what's possible. This single aspect of RTS keeps me coming back again and again. It is a puzzle that has no closed solution set. Gamecloud - Over the years the C&C franchise has grown into three separate but connected sub-genres; the original futuristic game, the alternate world of Red Alert and the near future Generals. In your opinion, which was the most successful with yourself and with fans of the series? Louis Castle - I can't speak for all the fans since clearly each storyline as its own dedicated group of fans that prefer it to the others. My personal favorite is the Tiberian series. Gamecloud - Other attempts to bring C&C into other genres, such as Soul Survivor and Renegade, have been less successful. Is it your opinion that the franchise should stick to the RTS genre or do you think the franchise could still have a shot at other genres of games? Louis Castle - Fortunately, we learned a tremendous amount from our C&C genre extensions of the past. I strongly feel that the rich universes created for these products can and should be expanded into other types of interactive products as well as other forms of linear entertainment. However, this should be in addition to and not in exception of a steady offering of traditional RTS products that move the genre forward. Gamecloud - How did the idea for creating a massive collection of nearly all the C&C games come about? Louis Castle - As I recall we were discussing the C&C franchise and the fact that modern PCs could not run the entire series of products. This inspired us to invest some time and resources into making the 10 years of products install and run on modern XP machines. We also decided this would be a great opportunity to share some memories and highlight a few of our devoted fans. I'm thrilled to see the reaction of the community and I look forward to adding a whole new group of people who will share my experiences of playing this great series. Gamecloud - Will any of the games in the collection get upgrades in any way? Louis Castle - The games were intentionally kept the same although we did apply various patches already available to the public to fix bugs and improve balance in multiplayer games. Additionally, all games will run on Windows XP as I mentioned above. C&C The First Decade is truly the collection of your favorite C&C games in their original presentation. Gamecloud - What sort of documentary footage will be included in The First Decade? Louis Castle - I’m really excited about the bonus DVD of commemorative video features included in this massive C&C compilation. The features include a look back at the history of C&C, interviews with EALA developers, designers, producers, look to the future of C&C, and a special C&C fan highlight piece which includes submissions from the C&C community telling us why they are the biggest C&C fan. Our fans are incredibly passionate and it was an honor to have them be a part of this collector’s edition for the C&C series. Gamecloud - Of course, the title of the collection hints that this will likely not be the final word on C&C. Can you give us any hints about where the franchise might be going in the future? Louis Castle - I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…The game is called ‘The First Decade’ for a reason! C&C is an incredible series of great games and is one of our most celebrated at EALA. The teams here absolutely intend to create more C&C games and are always looking for ways to bring C&C fans and gamers everywhere new experiences. We haven’t made any announcements just yet, but rest assured, you haven’t seen the last of C&C. Gamecloud - Finally is there anything else you wish to say about Command & Conquer The First Decade? Louis Castle - Just a sincere thank you to the millions of fans who have bought a C&C game over the past decade. Each of you have helped me live a dream and for that I will be forever grateful. I hope you enjoy this offering of the past and I look forward to doing my best to give you what you want in the future. C&C forever! http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=3415
