How to backup a Playstation CD?

17/03/2001

Old question but still seems to be very frequently asked around the message boards. Lets clarify this issue once again.

Why would one backup a CD?

Compact Discs arent everlasting. People generally dont handle them with required care and discs wear out rather quickly (scratches, dirt). If there is children or pets in your house then its STRONGLY recommended to backup the CDs. Even older kids typically arent too careful when handling the CDs, so if you have bought a Playstation for your kinds, I advice you to backup also.

Isnt copying a game CD illegal?

NO! You can produce a reasonable amount of copies for your personal use. Mass distributing the copies or selling the copies is illegal however.

What do you need:

A CD-ROM or CD-R(W) drive that can read sub-channel data

A CD-R drive that can write in DAO RAW mode with sub-channel data

Many Playstation titles are protected with the LibCrypt copy protection that is based on sub-channel data, so you will need a compatible reader and writer to re-produce such disc. On non-protected PSX discs the sub-channel support is not required. CloneCD homepage is a good page to look for compatible drives www.elby.de.

Suitable program: CloneCD, BlindWrite Suite, Padus DiscJuggler

Along with the RAW mode and sub-channel compatible drives you will need sophisticated software in order to make the backup. At least CloneCD, BlindWrite Suite and DiscJuggler support the RAW mode and have full support for sub-channel data. I havent tested DiscJuggler enough to evaluate its accuracy. However comments on certain message boards arent too positive about DJs performance in reproducing protected discs. I have briefly tested the BlindWrite Suite and it has already let me down a few times. The read routines of BlindRead seem to be inaccurate (Plextor 32TS CD-ROM) since every once in a file the resulted copy has errors.

CloneCD is the perfect tool for backing up PSX discs. It is the most tweaked and optimised application with many drive brand/model specific routines that improve the accuracy of the read process. To backup Playstation discs you need to have these options selected:

READ OPTIONS:

-Select read speed 8x (it always makes sense to use lower read speeds!)

-Check both sub-channel read options

WRITE OPTION:

-Adjust write speed to match the used media

-Check Dont repair sub-channel data

-Check power calibration
