Explosions for sale or rent

Venezuela has a problem with Mercenaries 2: their government is convinced this balls-out-action shooter is pure propaganda for an eventual US invasion. You can see their point: by the end of the game you can expect the virtual version of their country to be charred, broken and burning.

So many games promise truly destructible environments, and so few deliver. This third-person action game's mantra is "If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it." It's a game that hinges entirely on the joy of making things explode. On fire.

It also draws upon the joy of hijacking helicopters in mid-air - grapple up to it from the ground, boot the pilot out of the cockpit, and then unleash hell in your new chopper. In what's promised to be an open world in which you can sell your carnage-based services to the highest bidder, that's just one of your options.

A particularly exciting prospect is the co-op multiplayer: teaming up with a friend to lay utter waste to urban, jungle, tropical and mountainous environments. Expect to offend an entire South American country sometime in the second quarter of 2008.

New Fallout 3 Developer Diary and Concept Art

OXM writes, "Bethesda has updated its Fallout 3 site with a developer diary from its lead designer."

"Although lead designer, Emil Pagliarulo, doesn't talk about actual development such as stories of office pranks, multiplayer Two Worlds at lunchtime or late nights of work fuelled by crisps and Red Bull, he does talk a lot about the storyline."

"He explains about the Brotherhood Of Steel, who they are and how they're relevant to the Fallout 3 universe. Check out the developer diary for the full breakdown and nice, juicy bits of concept art."

We popped along to see Lian Li this morning and it had one of the more interesting cases that weʼve seen during this yearʼs Consumer Electronics Show, and this one isnʼt for PCs – itʼs for Xbox 360 owners.

The company has designed an all aluminium Xbox 360 replacement enclosure that lives up to Lian Liʼs reputation for quality and sleek, stylish design. The chassis was a prototype, but it contained a fully-functional Xbox 360 on which I had time to do a quick race in PGR4.

Of course, youʼre going to have to pull your Xbox 360 out of its original case, which means that your warranty will be void. But with that said, Lian Liʼs solution is a vast improvement over the Xbox 360 chassisʼ cooling, which means that it will be a much quieter design and overheating should be less of an issue as well.

Lian Liʼs representatives said that, due to the prototype caseʼs design, there is the chance for end users to replace the Xbox 360 hard drive with something cheaper and larger too, because Microsoftʼs drives arenʼt exactly good value for money when it comes to pounds per gigabyte.

This product is by no means final, but Lian Li is hoping to launch it later this year – weʼll bring you more information on the product as and when it becomes available on the market.

Xbox 360 set-top box won't record TV

BT has confirmed the new set-top box for Xbox 360 won't allow you to view or record live television.

As announced earlier this week, the telecoms company has signed a deal with Microsoft to offer 360 owners access to the BT Vision service. At present, BT Vision users receive Freeview TV channels via a set-top box which also works as a digital video recorder.

The Xbox 360 service, due to launch this summer, will only be available to BT Broadband subscribers. It will offer users access to on-demand movies, near-live FA premier League matches and other content. Users won't require a set-top box, but they won't enjoy all the benefits of BT Vision other users get.

Speaking to the BBC a spokesperson said, "The reason for streaming only on the Xbox is because currently the console does not have the capability for live TV or enough hard drive for practical downloading of content."

Microsoft could face stiff competition in the face of PlayTV, the new television and personal video recorder for PS3. As revealed at last year's Leipzig Games Conference, it will let users watch and record live TV and can be controlled remotely via PSP. PlayTV is due to launch in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early this year.

Burnout 3 Coming to Xbox Originals

Criterion's classic available from Monday.

Burnout 3 - for many the best in Criterion's kinetic driving series - is coming to Xbox Originals this Monday. It'll be available across all major territories with the exception of Japan for 1200 Microsoft Points.

The game joins other Xbox classics such as Halo, Psychonauts and Fable on Microsoft's Marketplace service and comes just weeks before the latest instalment in the series, Burnout Paradise, is released on January 25. The asking price for the download, 1200 Microsoft Points, translates as £10.20 or $14.99 in Earth money.
