XBL WTF: Why Can I Only Have 100 Friends?

Microsoft already looking into the issue.

There is something like 40 people on my own Xbox Live friends list, but there isn't a week that goes by someone doesn't bring up the fact that you can't add more than 100 people. The additional bio information should help users cut down on the extraneous friends, but for the folks who are just plain indiscriminate, is there an actual reason Microsoft has the list capped at 100? Yep.

"I think it's something we definitely want to do and something we're looking at doing in the future, but it's been more technically complicated than anyone anticipated, so it's taking longer than we had hoped," said Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg to 1UP, while walking through the new dashboard update a few weeks back. "We will get there in the future."

"There's some interdependences. Some things like original Xbox games have friends lists hard coded in, so there's things we gotta work through, but we'll get it figured out, it's something we want to do. Still, the majority of Live users don't even have 30 friends. But, I agree, my list is full. [laughs]" said Greenberg.

That doesn't exactly lay down a timetable, but at least it's on Microsoft's agenda. Make sure to check out the last few XBL WTFs we've asked Microsoft about recently:

Microsoft execs on Xbox Live, Video Store, HD DVD, and Michael Bay

The Xbox Live Video Store has opened its digital doors for the first time outside of the US - in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France and Germany. To find out why it took to long to leave US boundaries, and what the future holds for the service, GamesIndustry spent some time with Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of Gaming and Entertainment UK, and Robin Burrowes, Xbox Live marketing manager for the UK, and asked them these questions:

• Why has it taken so long for the Video Store to make it from the US?

• Are they pleased with the evolution of Xbox Live?

• How important is it that the Video Store should offer film download seamlessly?

• How does the Video Store complement the existing HD-DVD peripheral?

• There were some comments made recently by Michael Bay, who felt that Microsoft might be opting for a different strategy, bypassing the next-generation of DVDs altogether and opting for a download-only service in the long term. What would they say to that?

• Do they think Xbox 360 will ever been regarded for games and general (non-gaming) entertainment in roughly equal quantities?

• Will Microsoft replicate the 360's success with having key software titles launch at regular interval for video releases?

• What's the lag between a film being released in the cinema and it coming to the Video Store?

• Would Microsoft prefer to see the VOD window closer to that of the DVD release?

US Army Using Official Microsoft Halo 3 Tournaments For Recruiting

A press release from Microsoftʼs game division hit my inbox today with a seemingly harmless title:

Microsoft and U.S. Army Present First Ever “Halo 3? Championship Tournament on Xbox LIVE

Ok thatʼs fine and dandy that the Army decided to sponsor the event but read a little further into the PR and youʼll see how far the rabbit hole really goes.

“To further ensure that players are trained to the top of their games, the Army is also hosting a Destination Experience blade on Xbox LIVE. When the program begins, gamers will be able to access the blade via their Xbox LIVE dashboard, gaining access to multiple videos and a Tips and Tricks section dedicated to providing the best combat strategies and advice the Army experts have to offer.”

Well what do you know, the last paragraph of a fun press release about an upcoming Halo 3 tournament shows the true intrusive intentions. You of course have to sign up for this tournament and only then will the blade appear but Iʼm sure many will sign up regardless and then be greeted with the large unwanted “Army Blade” when itʼs released. Doesnʼt this feel like those checks you get in the mail for $4.99 that automatically sign you up for an expensive monthly service when you cash them?

Merry Christmas from Microsoft and the US Army!
