Eτοιμαστείτε για CoD4 Beta

 

Preamble:

We worked hard to get this beta done July 26th. Since then we've been working on logistical issues, MS cert, what would be involved to make everything work internationally, number of keys, and a bunch of other boring non-game stuff. Most of it is just related to being the first 3rd party console game to offer a beta.

 

Now there are even more logistical issues coming up. Streetwise is pumping up their servers in an effort for charlieoscardelta to be able to handle the beta traffic. Additionally, since they are testing the new servers right now they can't really update them. So putting up countdowns, changing and testing the scripts to gather info for tokens, etc would have to wait a bit.

 

 

24 hour notice:

But we've been playing the beta internally, and it's so much fun we are dying to play with you. So... let's blow off waiting for the site and just consider this the countdown -- there will be a way for people to register for the beta starting 5pm PST tomorrow. Some of those will be playing as early as tomorrow night.. tick tock tick tock.

 

The roll out:

The beta is going to roll out in waves. Rather than just putting a million people in the beta and hope nothing goes wrong, we will ramp up the playercount over time.

 

As fourzerotwo mentioned, right now some friends/family are testing. The press will be joining in the next couple days -- including those of you who make it into the first wave.

 

No worries if you aren't in the very first wave (most won't be), we should have a new wave of players every day or so as we ramp up.

 

Details on how to register for your chance to be in the beta will be posted tomorrow at 5pm PST*. So stay tuned for details, it will be a limited time offer.

 

 

*= this may not be the only way to ever get in the beta, but it is the way to have a chance to get in the early waves.

360 Gets European Price Cut, New Names, New Colour?

Guess they couldn't wait for the Games Convention to kick off. Microsoft just announced that European 360s are having their prices cut, probably to celebrate the late arrival of the Elite console in the region. The Core's now going to set you back £180/ 279, while the Premium's been cut to £250/ 349. The Elite, it's new, it doesn't need a cut. It's going on sale for £300/ 450. They're not done with the announcements, though.

 

Belgian site Shizzle Games are also reporting that the 360s will be launching with new names, which were first hinted at when Flynn uncovered those 360 holiday bundles. The Elite keeps its name, but the Premium looks like it's being changed to the Xbox 360 Pro and the Core's now called the Xbox 360 Arcade.

 

To coincide with these changes, the Arcade is coming bundled with a 360 memory card which will be pre-loaded with 5 XBLA titles (one of which looks like Pac-Man). The Pro, if this chart is to be believed, will also be sporting a new colour scheme, having a "silver finish" as opposed to the Arcade's "standard finish".

 

Λοιπόν, οι πρώτες αντιδράσεις για το "Αrcade" είναι πολύ θετικές, αφού σε αντίθεση με το core φαίνεται ότι είναι πλέον ελκυστικό για πολύ κόσμο. Με Ε280/$280 παίζεις όλα τα παιχνίδια toy 360 απλά με την έλειψη σκληρού δεν έχεις την ίδια χριστικότητα στο live, για να κατεβάζεις αβέρτα arcades και demos, κάτι που δεν ενδιαφέρει ένα σηαμντικό ποσοστό, ενώ θα προσελκύσει και πολλούς casual gamers. Εκτός αυτού έχει και το τυράκι των 5 free arcade games. Ίσως αποδειχθεί κίνηση ματ για την MS.

Welcome to the Jungle

In early tests, players wandered lost around the Jungle level: Colored dots showing player location at five-second intervals (each color is a new time stamp) were scattered randomly. So Bungie fixed the terrain to keep players from backtracking. Sure enough, the dots clustered by color, showing that players were moving smoothly through the map.

 

A similar report showed that in the game's first level, called Jungle, players often ran out of rounds for their rifles. This was a mystery, because the designers had been careful to leave more than enough ammunition lying around. The team checked Pagulayan's video records and found that people were firing at the aliens when they were too far away, misjudging the range of the weapon and wasting bullets.

At first the designers couldn't figure out how to fix this problem. But then Griesemer stumbled on an elegant hack: He made the targeting reticule turn red when enemies were in range, subtly communicating to players when their shots were likely to hit home. It worked.
