Bryan Lee: To answer the undertone of your comment, yeah, I wish we could have had a couple hundred thousand more units. When you make the decision to go very broad very fast, and with the kind of cutting edge technology, we knew demand was going to outstrip supply. That's not new information. We just wish we would have had 300,000 more than what we had. IGN: If you had the ability to do it again, let's say you had a magic wand and could instantly produce the best number of Xbox 360s for launch in North America and Europe, what would that number be? Bryan Lee: When you do this kind of thing, you're not capable of building the quantity that demand would want if you make the right decisions for your business. You make the right decisions for your business by getting as much cutting-edge technology as you can, that needs to live for years and years and years, and you need to create a balanced system where everything is coming in relatively hot and fast. That's what you do. And if you short-cut that, you come in with inferior technology. You can get more units, but it's not the right technology. If you start with some principles of the business, at least principles that we adhere to, the range was within a few hundred thousand units. The question you asked, the number of units being substantially larger than that but it's not kind of a practical answer. Sorry to debate you on it, but we can debate it all day long. GN: We can debate it all day long. I mean, you guys work at Microsoft, and you're good at this. (Laughter) You're smart and you're well trained at working angles and statistics and you have a really good business, but I also think that you could have put out more units -- maybe 500,000 more in North American alone -- and people would have gobbled them up. I also think that Microsoft really tried to do something that is impossible to do well, which is to launch a next-generation system in three different territories in three weeks. I have to ask you again, are you really happy with that launch? Bryan Lee: I'm really happy with that decision. I'm really happy with the launch. Would I have liked to have had a few hundred thousand more units? Definitely. With the decision and the strategy? Wow. I'm happier today than I was three months ago. IGN: (Laughter) Well, so am I. The launch is over. I'm relieved. Bryan: Well, you know, I'm happy now because look at where we are now. Look at what Sony is up against now. I got a lead in 19 countries. I'll have a lead in 30 countries within a couple of months. Who knows when and where they're going to come out, and I'll bet you a fair amount of money right now whether they're going to have any production hiccups that are… I'll bet you on who has the bigger production hiccups. I'll take us on the under. IGN: I'll bet you 10 bucks that Microsoft will have more production hiccups in software and hardware when [the PS3] launches in North America in fall 2006. Bryan Lee: You sure you only want to put $10 on it? I got kids that are going to go to college… IGN: Not on my $10 bucks. (Laughter) Bryan Lee: I'll be a little nice. I'll bet they're going to run into similar things. And I'll bet since our team did some monumental things, that they have more. We can agree to disagree for now. IGN: So what do you say to this, on the same subject: I get letters every day in which people complain about having broken Xbox 360s and are having troubles getting their 306s replaced, people in my office whose 360s broke because of some strange reason while playing DOA4, or I'm getting letters from people who are saying, "I'm really glad I didn't buy a 360, because I've heard all the stories about the systems breaking, so now I'm waiting for a PS3." I've come to a partial conclusion that Microsoft did its own damage -- actual PR work for Sony -- by launching a system that wasn't ready -- that was rushed. Now people have a lot of reasons to wait for the PS3, and Microsoft has provided all of those reasons without Sony lifting a finger. You think that's too cynical? Bryan Lee: I think that doesn't correlate to the data I see. Our returns, our issues around production are actually by most standards, fairly low, if not dramatically low, relative to other consumer electronic launches. So, maybe you're getting a vocal minority. Maybe your friends have had a bad streak of luck, but relative to any kind of expectations, we're on the low end. It's odd to me…that you have attracted such wonderful people. IGN: We do get a bunch of happy gamers here at IGN, this is true. (Laughter) Bryan Lee: All kidding aside, we have had surprisingly low challenges with product quality. We have challenges with people wanting to have more systems, if that's where you're going. IGN: That's one thing, there simply aren't enough systems. Bryan Lee: I guess what you're implicitly saying is: Don't launch in Europe, don't launch in Asia, launch it all in North America and have more quantity in one region. IGN: Yes, exactly. I guess I am a little North American biased, but I haven't see any other companies launch in three different territories in three weeks. That's not to say you shouldn't have done it, because I think it's a shrewd strategy to go out and cover three major territories at once, but I also think it's a technical, operation, manufacturing nightmare. And a lot of the things that happened with the Xbox 360 launch proved that to be true. There were crazy stories about people getting fights trying to get 360s, robberies, and yes, those are reflections of demand, but it's a reflection of a lack of supply. There are hardware units that broke, there are software incompatibilities, there are all sorts of problems. I've been through five or six launches, and I understand that the Xbox 360 is a much more complicated machine than the N64 or the PS2; it does many more things. But I also think there are way more problems with this launch than I have seen with any launch, ever. The N64, GameCube and the Dreamcast certainly didn't have as many issues. Bryan Lee: At some time I'd like to get some facts on that. I think I'll bet you another $10 that we're actually mathematically lower probability than any of the other launches you cited. IGN: I know for a fact that the Dreamcast, N64, and the GameCube, heck, even the Xbox itself, had far fewer problems that you guys did. The PS2 was different. They had difficulties. Bryan Lee: Until somebody publicly discloses this information, we'll have to agree to disagree. IGN: Is Microsoft publicly speaking about percentages of returns on Xbox 360s? What are those numbers? Bryan Lee: We've been saying we're well under the 3% to 5% that most new consumer electronics return rate. We're well below that. If people do have problems with that, then we try to take care of them as fast as humanly possible. If anybody falls through the cracks, then let us attend to them. However, Konami does hope to work with Microsoft to release titles that help push the system in the Japanese market as well. [b']Regarding Winning Eleven and Pro Baseball Spirits, two of Konami's other announced titles, he states that we can expect them some time after April.[/b] This doesn't mean that they will be released in April, of course, but Ishizuka does hope to have them out as soon as possible.
