E3: Halo 3 SKU announced

Microsoft announced a new Halo 3-themed console at its E3 conference earlier this morning.

The special edition unit will go on sale alongside the game this September.

Peter Moore delightedly unveiled the new SKU, which has an "authentic" Spartan green and gold finish and comes with matching wireless controller, 20GB hard drive, Headset, Play & Charge kit, and Halo 3 Gamer pictures and themes.

Microsoft also showed a short clip of a Halo project Neill Blomkamp (the abandoned film's director) was working on. However, it appeared to be little more than a fancy trailer surrounding the hugely popular series of games.

Halo 3 also featured as a key staple of Microsoft's promise of great games this Christmas, with an extended trailer of the game's single-player story closing the conference. It featured all the favourites: Cortana, Chief, Covenant, Warthogs, gigantic gun battles, etc. - as well as an enemy that filled the entire screen.

What's the game about: It's the latest episode in Namco's super-popular Soul Calibur series, and the first one on the PS3/360 hardware generation. The one-on-one 3D weapons-based fighting action that has always been the distinguishing characteristic of the series remains unchanged. Check out the latest issue of EGM for a cover story on the game, revealing much more.

What's new for E3: The addition of online fighting means that Soul Cali...er, Soulcalibur joins the other three 3D Japanese fighting franchises (Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive) in the online match-up arena, moving competitive combat out of the arcades and into living rooms everywhere, opening the field for players of all skill levels to meet and compete. Now, instead of padding your record by whupping your baby sister's ass, you can bring your A-game to the masses to see how you really stack up. The game wraps up with new characters, bigger stages (for fewer ring-outs), and the possibility of all-new game features that haven't been decided on, but could include anti-ringout measures. http://media.1up.com/media?id=3173724

What we like: Not only is online play good for gamers, but it's good for the genre, which despite the popularity of the final four, has been shrinking despite itself over the last half a decade. With more people playing together online, it's possible that the fighting game genre may see a resurgence in popularity, which could inspire more sequels and, hopefully, more innovation. What we dislike: Ivy's been going back for seconds, as evidenced by the first promotional renders we've seen. Another thing is that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions seem like they will be the first releases of the game, with no arcade release preceding them. That factor led to balance issues with Soul Calibur 3 (since an arcade release often supplies the dev team with valuable feedback in this area) and could become an issue here.
