Square-Enix's Wada: 360 And PS3 'Over-Engineered'

A new interview with Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has seen the influential executive emphasis the importance of the handheld market, particularly the Nintendo DS and describe the Xbox 360 and PS3 as “mismatched” to emerging new demographics.

Speaking in a new article by the Financial Times, Wada suggested that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were poorly suited to the current market and that handheld consoles would continue to dominate sales this year, as the demographics of consumers fundamentally alters following the success of the Nintendo DS and Wii.

Referring to the decision to release Dragon Quest IX only on the Nintendo DS, instead of a Sony format, Wada said: “We chose the Nintendo DS because the widest array of people use it, including people who previously did not play games before.”

“There is a new breed of gamers in the market – we have to make games for all kinds of people,” added Wada. “In the old days, we could just focus on the PlayStation or the Game Boy, but the environment has changed completely.”

Wada also accused the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 of being over-engineered, saying; ““There are too many specs – and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection and a deep knowledge of gaming – these consoles are mismatched to todayʼs environment. In a year or two years they will fare better.”

Rumor: Marathon: Durandal Coming to Xbox 360

Bungie origin shooter listed on German version of ESRB.

The idea of porting or updating Bungie's seminal first-person-shooter Marathon or its sequels to Xbox Live Arcade isn't a new idea. In fact, Bungie actually addressed the idea in May 2006 as part of a reader Q&A:

"Of course it's possible, it's just not on any current agenda. If it's any consolation, many, many people think it's a good idea."

This afternoon, further evidence of Marathon's bantered appearance surfaced. Xbox Live Arcade (the website, not the service) linked to German website Xbox Archiv, who then points out that Germany's version of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (poorly translated by us as Support Software Self-Control), has listed Marathon: Durandal as an Xbox 360 product. Furthermore, the product is dated as having been filed today.

Marathon: Durandal

Publisher: Microsoft EPDC

Prufdatum: 12.06.2007 -- USK Nr.: 18801/07

Sprache: englisch -- System: Microsoft XBOX 360

Genre: Shooter

This isn't a weird confusion with the original Mac or PC version, as there's a separate listing for that, not filed by Microsoft, from way back in 1996.

Marathon 2 : Durandal

Publisher: FUNWARE c/o Up to date S.u.V. mbH

Prufdatum: 31.10.1996 -- USK Nr.: 2169/96

Sprache: deutsch -- System: PC/Mac-PC

Genre: Shooter

1UP contacted Microsoft for comment, but we've yet to hear back. Given the Xbox fanbase's rabid love for all things Bungie, however, giving Marathon an Xbox Live Arcade face lift makes sense -- the official announcement is probably just a little farther out. In the meantime, check out the original Marathon trilogy for free, as Bungie released the original three games as complimentary freeware in 2004.
