xrest Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 New Square RPG: The Last Remnant Remember they licensed Unreal Engine 3? Here's the result. Square Enix's Final Fantasy party this month promises a flew of new announcements, not the least of which are new franchises from the RPG powerhouse. Game Informer's (via Siliconera) scooped the surprise a little early, however, revealing The Last Remnant, a next-generation RPG (we're guessing Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though it's currently unspecified) directed by Hiroshi Takai, one of the game planners from The Bouncer. Maybe Takai's learned something since his, uh, PlayStation 2 launch title seven years ago. The Last Remnant's main characters have a pretty unique styling to them, as well. You choose between the two, but Square Enix's anticipating the decision ahead of time -- one character, Rush, has been artistically styled as a traditional Square Enix hero and the other, generically titled The Conquerer, is a dark anti-hero meant for Western games. The Last Remnant's been designed on Unreal Engine 3, and we should see the first official media come from the party on May 12 and 13. Going with Epic's technology isn't too surprising considering the company's emphasizing the focus on Western gamers. "From the conceptual stage of this project, we kept a global market in mind, placing a special emphasis on the North American market," said Takai in the Game Informer story. We don't know much about combat, but it's turn-based, more action-oriented and has a cinematic flair. Most interestingly, however, The Last Remnant is being localized as it's developed in Japan, so Square Enix is planning a simultaneous release here and there. We'll be back with more details soon.

xrest Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 XBL Spring Dash Update at Least 24 Hours Off A little longer to wait for chatting with MSN buddies. To ease gamer anxiety, Major Nelson announced late last night that the spring dashboard update is "not being released in the next 24-hours." This update adds chat functionality, a new "marketplace" blade, tweaked background downloading, a specific achievement unlocked display and establishes regional content locks for Video Marketplace goods. The official press release stated the update would be available "the week of May 7," so Microsoft still has time before gamers grow completely restless. While 360 owners wait, they can check out 2 new videos on XBL showing the ins-and-outs of the new features. If you're having trouble finding them, here's a road map: demos and game videos --> game trailers --> gaming community --> behind the scenes --> game trailers --> voila!
xrest Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 Test Drive 2 in 2008? Atari was unable to confirm or deny rumours this morning that Test Drive Unlimited 2 is in development and due for release in 2008. It was speaking in the aftermath of Polish website GRY-OnLine.pl revealing the game, claiming to have received the 100 per cent reliable information from an anonymous source. Said source reckons we're in store for a new PC and Xbox 360 game that will introduce off-road racing, dynamic weather, and 2,400km of road to saunter around. Speculation like this is sometimes unfounded, but Atari's response lends a degree of believability. As does the fact that Test Drive Unlimited was one of its most critically acclaimed games of 2006. Released on Xbox 360 late last year, and followed by PC, PS2 and PSP versions, it lets you jump behind the wheel of some shiny and hugely expensive motors, then put your foot down and burn rubber around a tropical Hawaiian island, "doing" races and building up an empire. You can do almost anything you please, not having to stick to races or formulas if you prefer, and thanks to a clever bit of integration with that old Internet, you often ran into real people. It all turned out rather well, as our Test Drive Unlimited review will tell you.
xrest Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 Δημοσ. 8 Μαΐου 2007 Hydrophobia Info Leaks out Blade Interactive lifts the lid on its watery title. UK developer Blade Interactive has been busy working on its secretive next-gen title Hydrophobia for years, but has now finally released details about the upcoming survival adventure. According to the game's official website, Hydrophobia is a "revolutionary survival adventure game which uses HydroEngine to deliver the most realistic water you've ever seen". The HydroEngine has been in research and development for three years. As the title and above quote would suggest, the game's central theme is water, which is used to overcome obstacles by moving objects and also provides plenty of dangerous situations as you swim against strong currents or get trapped in a flooding room. Along with this revolutionary new water system, Hydrophobia also uses Blade's new Infinite Worlds AI system, which "provides incredibly information rich environments". According to Blade, enemies and non-player-characters have a detailed knowledge of the world around them. They remember areas that are flooded, which doors have been locked/unlocked and dynamically react to changes in the environments. Although exact gameplay details are still sparse, Blade revealed that you play as Kate Wilson a systems engineer who becomes a reluctant hero when terrorists take over a futuristic city-sized cruise liner - called the Queen of the World. Unfortunately Kate is afraid of water, which will no doubt lead to plenty of scary liquid-based situtations for her.
