X360 Elite lacks PCM audio

 

And may have Blu-ray add-on

WHILST FANBOYS HAVEdrooling over the extra bits and bobs attached to the Vole's latest console release, the Xbox 360 Elite, those in the know have been dissecting its capabilities - and it's not all good news.

 

For starters, the 360 Elite will only support the HDMI 1.2 specification, as opposed to 1.3, which is the latest and greatest (and ships with the PS3). 1.3 adds support for the transmission of Dolby TrueHD, which is a lossless multi-channel audio (PCM) format being used on top-end HD-DVD discs.

 

In a forum post, Microsoft techie Amir Majidimehr suggests that "If you are keen on having 5.1 PCM output, I recommend purchasing the Toshiba A2 player which after the price drop, will be much cheaper than Elite," which we suspect isn't quite the company line.

 

Additionally, when using HDMI the resolution on the 360 will be forced to 1080p, regardless of the display resolution of the device it is actually being connected to, which could result in unnecessary image downscaling or, at worst, lack of picture.

 

However, that's not all the interesting Elite gossip. Whilst the decision not to include an HD-DVD drive in the unit has annoyed some, Microsoft seems to be suggesting that its because a Blu-ray add-on unit could be made available for the console at a later date. In an interview with GamesIndustry, Europe boss Neil Thompson suggests that when it comes to movies, "Im not sure the market has moved to high definition yet... And if and when it does, then the way that weʼve constructed the offering weʼve made means weʼll be able to go whichever way we want."

 

Is that a hint at an add-on Blu-ray player, should Sony's proprietary format win the HD war?

 

The market for HD movies is in a precarious position at the moment, and whilst Sony would like to think that the PS3 is a great trojan horse for Blu-ray, world wide sales don't yet give credence to that argument. Microsoft seems to be hedging its bets, but the so-so hardware upgrade for the Elite isn't really helping its cause. µ

Harmonix take to the next-gen stage with EA!

 

 

They will, they will, rock you...

With Guitar Hero II on the brink of its next-gen debut this Friday (April 06), the original developers of the franchise have revealed their forthcoming project in conjunction with MTV and EA.

Rock Band is set to take the two player axe attack of GH and turn it up to 11, allowing 4 players to simultaneously play in their own virtual rock act!

 

Speaking to USA Today Alex Rigopulos, co-founder of Harmonix, has explained that this latest project "takes the core premise of Guitar Hero and expands it tenfold." And being part of a collaborative band means that gamers will now either play the role of guitarist, drummer or singer in a title that will offer appropriate peripherals for each band position - white touring van is not included... Of course, online play is also catered for, meaning you can draft in the best musicians from across the globe in a bid to become Xbox Live's first U2. "You could have one guitarist in Germany and another one in Texas, a drummer in New York and a singer from somewhere else, and they can play together online," EA's David DeMartini commented.

And the close association with MTV will also open up avenues to licensed in-game music, which your fledgling 4-peice can slaughter at their leisure! A point that MTV's Jeff Yapp reaffirms; "This game offers a meaningful way for labels to participate in a segment of entertainment they, for the most part, have not been able to."

With a promise to cover the width and breath of rock, "from metal to classic rock to Southern rock to everything in between," there is still time to grow your hair, buy leathers and practice that all important horn throwing prior to Rock Band's debut on the 360 this winter.

We were even more impressed when we managed to bend one of those metal barriers that line the road - which are usually rock solid too. As we tried to recover back onto the road the front corner of our car got stuck on one end of the barrier, and with the accelerator held firmly down we slowly bent the metal into the road before freeing up our bumper and hobbling the remainder of our smashed car along the course.
