Microsoft Admits Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Support Possible

Although the eventuality has been hinted at before, Xbox UK head Neil Thompson has stated again that if the Blu-ray format becomes significantly more successful than the HD-DVD format then the company will support it with the Xbox 360.

Speaking to the BBC, Thompson is quoted as saying: “Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution. The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice."

Microsoft is known to greatly favor the HD-DVD format, although most assume that an unwillingness to support a Sony-sponsored format has played a significant part in this decision. As such, the Xbox 360ʼs HD-DVD drive has become the cheapest way to obtain a HD-DVD movie player.

Microsoft has always denied plans to release games on the HD-DVD format and this would presumably also follow for any potential Blu-ray drive. Recent data has suggested that cumulative sales of Blu-ray discs have surpassed those for HD-DVD for the first time, with Blu-ray outselling the HD-DVD format discs by a margin of more than 2-to-1.

Team Ninja Slams Devil May Cry 4

GR: Moving along those lines, have you seen Devil May Cry 4? Do you have an opinion on it?

YH: I have seen Devil May Cry 4, but it's basically a totally different philosophy from what we do. If you look at their trailer that they have online, you'll see that none of the enemies attack you. None of the enemies attack whatsoever. That's a game where the enemies only exist to provide a target for all of your combos, and they don't really do anything else. For us, we're a combat-action game; our enemies are alive, they think, they attack you, and if you don't actively defend yourself, you're going to die really quick. So it's a basic difference in philosophy. We're an action game, they're kind of a "let's see how stylishly we can show off these combos and get a high score" kind of thing. So if the people playing think that's stylish, then more power to them."

Capcom Day this April 12 - expect a game-related announcement

Must have been a holiday celebrating some odd conquest by Mega Man. Anyway, we were fishing through web forums, and happened upon the Capcom BBS. Here, Sr. Director of Strategic Planning and Research Christian Svensson confirms that this year's Capcom Day is on April 12.

That's not the only thing. Someone on the BBS inquired if Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox 360) and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles would feature in this Capcom Day. Well, Svensson took the standard press Mega Blaster to the question by neither confirming nor denying:

You may be slightly pleased and slightly disappointed then. I also suspect something not within either one of those parameters to be announced that will excite you though.

Well, he is "The official 'I wish I could tell you more, but then I'd have to kill you ' guy" on the BBS. Let's break down his answer shall we?

* "You may be slightly pleased and slightly disappointed..." - meaning that there will be something either RE5 or Umbrella-related. Coin toss says it's probably Umbrella, since it's been in the pipeline longer, but no one wants to count RE5 out.

* "also suspect something not within either one of those parameters..." - so it's not either RE5 or Umbrella-related? There was that news bit about Capcom announcing more Wii titles soon. So, which Capcom IP would it be, if not an entirely new one?

o On the other hand, does it have to be just the Wii? Svensson didn't mention any specifics.

Can't we just hog-tie the guy and feed him truth serum through a nasal tube, maybe he'll finally spill something?

Mortal Kombat VIII to be an MMORPG?

World of Kombat, here we come! In the April (yea) edition of Official Xbox Magazine, there is a blurb in the rumor section saying that Mortal Kombat VIII will be an MMORPG. Itʼs easy to say that it is the April edition of the magazine, therefore it is an April Foolʼs joke. But, there actually might be some truth behind it.

Last year, Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, said the following last year during the annual Fight Night chat:

“Mortal Kombat 8 is going to start from scratch on a number of levels. It will also go in a direction that nobody is going to expect… and our thing that youʼll hear about very soon are all going to be new to this game. Itʼs going to be nothing like youʼve ever seen before.”

The same can be said about any video game sequel in history, but you never know. It might not be so bad trying to level up Johnny Cageʼs sun glasses.
