Forza Motorsport 2 Running on 1080p TVs

 

With the push for 1080p resolution gaming in the next generation arena, it's become ever more important to make sure that not only does your console support native 1080p (the Xbox 360 does), but also that your game looks good when push comes to shove. Which is why late last week, Big Boss Hartman rolled in a brand new 46" 1080p Samsung (S4695D) TV for the art team to tune graphics, in case folks do run the game upscaled to 1080p. Uh, you guys do know that Xbox 360 does 1080p now over your standard component cables, right? Wink

 

Anyway, from personal experience, 1080p over component cables gives you richer colors, while 1080p over VGA and HDMI give you a sharper picture (less ghosting with text in menus, for instance) while colors overall look a little more washed out. As for Forza Motorsport 2 in 1080p... so far, it's looking very good. That's as much testament to the game's graphics as it is the Xbox 360's beastly resolution upscaler chip, dubbed Ana.

 

It's almost enough to make me run out and buy a 1080p plasma just so I can go back and play 360 games like Lost Planet and Gears of War in 1080p glory.

Microsoft comes under fire from BBC's Watchdog programme

Campbell and co. to investigate Xbox 360 problems

Microsoft is set to come under pressure in tonight's edition of consumer affairs show Watchdog as the investigative team looks into potential faults with the Xbox 360.

 

GamesIndustry.biz has learned that the programme will focus on the 'ring of death' problem, as it's been nicknamed by gamers, where three red lights appear around the console's power button and the machine stops working.

 

The problem appears to occur much more frequently in the first batch of Xbox 360 units produced.

 

In the US, Microsoft agreed to offer complimentary repairs to owners of faulty consoles manufactured before January 1, 2006 - even if their warranties had expired. The company also said it would refund customers who had already paid for repairs.

 

However, it would seem the deal only applies to US Xbox 360 owners. Here in the UK, as Watchdog is set to report, gamers are being asked to pay between GBP 80 and GBP 90 to have their console fixed - regardless of when it was manufactured.

 

The show will feature interviews with consumers who have experienced problems with their Xbox 360s, but GamesIndustry.biz understands that Microsoft has declined to send a representative to appear on the programme.

 

Watchdog will be broadcast tonight on BBC1 at 7pm GMT.

 

UPDATE: Microsoft has now told the BBC that "most people with an Xbox 360 have an outstanding experience, and there is no systemic issue". They say each incident is unique and is looked at on a case by case basis, and have given one of the consumers featured on tonight's show a replacement unit and a new game.

It looks like Treasure's rather marvellous Dreamcast and GameCube shooter Ikaruga might be on its way to Xbox Live Arcade.

That's because the game is currently showing up on Partnernet, the Xbox 360's closed debug network, access to which is limited to journalists and developers.

 

There are two downloads listed in the Xbox Live Arcade section of Partnernet, which mirrors Xbox Live's functionality in a different setting. The titles are nondescript, but if you download the two 5.7MB files Ikaruga appears under a Japanese name in the console's Live Arcade menu.

 

We couldn't get it to run, but it does reach a Treasure title screen, and lists 12 achievements including one marked "Secret" and one for each of Chapters 1-4 and the Final Chapter.

 

Treasure has previously said it was "really interested" in working on Xbox Live Arcade, but when company president Masato Maegawa spoke about that desire recently he wasn't specific about any projects in development.

 

Treasure is known to be working on an original shooter for Xbox 360, but last we heard it won't be out for a while.
