Unreal Tournament May Still Support Console MODs

Free, user-generated content for online shooter could still happen.

Part of what makes first-person-shooters on the PC so appealing is the ability for aspiring designers, artists and programmers to develop their own character models, levels, weapons and whatever else their mind can conjure up, often times using the same tools the developers themselves did. That's never been possible on consoles, but Epic Games has indicated in the past this is part of their goal for Unreal Tournament 3 -- first on PlayStation 3 and PC and now, it seems, on Xbox 360, too.

Speaking to Game Informer, Epic's VP Mark Rein discussed why the company had forgone announcing an Xbox 360 version of the game until just recently. "One of our big concerns was the ability to bring mods to the platform, and it's still a bit of an open issue, but we've had some pretty clear indications that we'll be able to do it, and we're pretty excited about that," he says. "That was kind of the one thing, we wanted to make sure we'd be able to bring user-created content to the platform before we made a firm commitment to it."

Previously, Epic previously stated this was already in the cards for the PS3 version (and PC, natch), and appears to have been part of the hold up on confirming an Xbox 360 title, even though we're willing to be it's actually been in development for some time already. The difference between PlayStation Network and Xbox Live is companies can reportedly add content to Sony's service without a series of certifications, a common criticism directed at Microsoft, which delayed the release of demos, game patches and other content.

Back in September, Epic held a Q&A session during the Tokyo Game Show, where Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney outlined the situation pretty clearly: "Unfortunately it's [Xbox Live] more of a closed platform," and says they've even been "quite negative toward user-created content."

Through Microsoft's XNA initiatives, perhaps Epic's found a way to get Microsoft to loosen up a bit, or maybe Epic will package user modifications and offer them on the XBL marketplace. That'd be an easy enough microtransaction, wouldn't it? But that wouldn't be particularly fair for console owners, considering the PC kids wouldn't have to pay a dime.

Plenty of questions in need of answering, and hopefully it'll all become clearer in the coming months. Unreal Tournament 2007 doesn't ship till much later this year.

Peter Moore: We're Not Giving Up on Japan

"It's not easy. But we're not going to back down just because it's not easy."

The recent news that Gears of War managed to crack the top 10 best-sellers list in Japan must have been unexpectedly impressive news for Microsoft and Epic Games, but there's still much to do in the country, with Horonobu Sakaguchi's initial effort, Blue Dragon, already having delivered its payload and Lost Odyssey an undetermined amount of months off. Still, while speaking to IGN, Microsoft exec. Peter Moore remains confident, if a bit more honest than usual, about the future:

"I think we need to continue to be a competitor as aggressively as we have been since the day we launched [in Japan]. Little things make your day a little better. This morning when I woke up, seeing Gears of War as one of the top ten selling games in Japan, on top of Blue Dragon's success over the holidays, is vindication of a company that understand what it needs to stick to the task. I think we are seeing progress in Japan. With Lost Odyssey still to come, I think we feel real good about our ability to compete and compete aggressively in the Japanese market. It's not easy, let me make that clear. It's not easy. But we're not going to back down just because it's not easy."

The question then: what's next for Japan? Moore himself points to Lost Odyssey, Capcom's dual support of Dead Rising and Lost Planet, but considering both the immediate and distant future, can they persuade Japanese gamers away from PlayStation 3 (then again, that's not exactly blowing their minds, either) and Wii?

Fable 2: "revelation" at GDC

Lionhead has said today that Peter Molyneux's Fable 2 keynote at GDC in San Francisco will provide a "surprise and a revelation" for those following the sequel's development.

"It's supposed to be like a surprise and a revelation at GDC itself," a spokesperson for the company told Eurogamer this afternoon.

The exact time and date of Molyneux's "Innovations in Fable 2" speech is still TBD, but it will take place at the Conference which runs from 5-9th March, 2007.

Lionhead today also released the first artwork for the game, the only peak we've had at what's going on besides a short teaser trailer.

The title itself is a sequel to the 2004 free-roaming RPG, Fable, in which your actions genuinely affect your character and your surroundings.

Naturally Molyneux has something outrageous and ground-breaking planned, and we're enigmatically promised that his GDC keynote address won't be another drip-feeding session. Perhaps we'll even see some assets.

Aside from saying there's going to be a revelation, though, Lionhead's staying fully tight-lipped on what you're going to see. "I think it would be rather a shame to be talking about the game at GDC and not release anything," the spokesperson added.

Lone Coder' released a new version of XNA SharpNES - a indie NES emulator for Xbox 360 made with Microsoft's 'XNA Game Studio Express'.

What's new/fixed:

* Second controller fixed (Yea for Luigi fans!)

* Made thumbstick work as an alternate control

* Battery saves are stored to disk (Be sure to exit the emu or it won't save)

* Crude rom navigation

* Emu remembers which rom was last loaded and will load it up

* Minor performance improvements

* Emu runs at full speed when not being debugged

What's Still Missing:

* Real Rom Loading Menu

* Sound (Might I suggest humming along or retro game music from the 360)

* Full Mapper Support
