CES 2007: Microsoft Booth Report

The hot spot for gaming at this year's CES.

The Consumer Electronics Show is typically more about giant plasma screens and pumping sound systems than it is about videogames, but if you keep your eyes open you can always find a few games nestled in there. As we scoured the floor on this opening day to find what gems were hiding at various booths to help demonstrate the latest in computer hardware, there was one place where it didn't take long to hit pay dirt. Microsoft's CES booth, while still heavily focused on Zune and Vista, had enough gaming kiosks running the latest in gaming to bring a smile to any Xbox 360 or PC owner's face.

Most of Microsoft's gaming stations were running games we have seen before or ones that have already been released, but there were a few new appearances worthy of notice. Here's a rundown of what is playable at Microsoft's CES show floor:

Moore: 5.3 Software Attach Rate for Xbox 360

Xbox boss Peter Moore says that the Xbox 360 enjoys a software attach rate of 5.3 units per console, reveals the latest Xbox Live stats and reiterates a 13-15 million hardware shipment target for FY07.

Moore said in a statement that the high attach rate was due to a strong first-year software lineup consisting of over 160 games currently available. He affirmed that Gears of War plowed through the holidays selling over 2.7 million copies since its November release.

He also said that the Xbox Live community “has eclipsed 5 million members, with over half of all consoles connected.” Moore said that Microsoft is still on track to meet its goal of 6 million Live users by June 2007, the end of its 2007 fiscal year.

Over 100 million pieces of content have been downloaded from online store Xbox Live Marketplace and users have downloaded over 20 million Xbox Live Arcade games to date, according to Moore. Over 70 percent of Xbox Live members download content from Marketplace.

Moore outlined what he called the “stickiness” of Xbox Live, or the high activity of members. Xbox Live Gold subscribers have an average of 21 friends, and 2 million voice, text and picture messages are sent over Xbox Live. He called this community aspect “key” to the growth of the Xbox business.

The corporate VP also affirmed Microsoftʼs previously stated goal of shipping 13-15 million Xbox 360s by the end of fiscal 2007.

Aside from games, Moore said that Microsoft has struck a deal with Lionsgate to bring an all-high-def movie lineup to Xbox Live Marketplace.

During Microsoftʼs pre-Consumer Electronics Showcase keynote over the weekend, chairman Bill Gates confirmed that the company sold 10.4 million Xbox 360s by the end of calendar 2006, surpassing its 10 million unit goal. The company also revealed IPTV for Xbox 360.

Tomorrow, RedOctane will be making a formal announcement to offer up some key details about the forthcoming Xbox 360 release of Guitar Hero II. Among them is the confirmation of a March 2007 ship date.

The press release will indicate “over 70 finger-melting tracks,” though a person close to the company told TeamXbox that the game will include 74 on-disc songs—the 64 tunes that made up the PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II song list, as well as 10 more that are exclusive to the Xbox 360 game. RedOctaneʼs announcement is expected to reveal five of them (and the artists that made them famous):

* Billion Dollar Babies (Alice Cooper)

* Dead! (My Chemical Romance)

* Hush (Deep Purple)

* Life Wasted (Pearl Jam)

* Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo (Rick Derringer)

TeamXbox was also told that three of the remaining five exclusives are Possum Kingdom (Toadies), Salvation (Rancid) and The Trooper (Iron Maiden), all of which will be part of the main gameplay. The remaining two are currently unannounced, though they will only be unlockable through gameplay. Additionally, Dead! and Possum Kingdom will be “master tracks,” meaning that theyʼll be the respective bandsʼ original recordings, rather than the studio remakes that make up the rest of the tunes in the game.

The other key section of the announcement will revolve around plans for downloadable content through Xbox Live. While RedOctaneʼs announcement wonʼt provide details on what will be offered—beyond stating itʼll include “achievement points, download themes, picture packs, and, most importantly, new songs through Xbox Live Marketplace”—TeamXbox was told that the publisher expects to make a batch of songs available on the day that the game hits stores, so players can immediately expand the playable song list. A RedOctane spokesperson stated that he expects the company to announce aspects about the first batch of downloadable tunes some time in February.

(As we indicated in our November Guitar Hero II preview, the rumor is that the first downloadable songs will give Xbox 360 players a chance to catch up on the franchise by offering the song list from the first Guitar Hero game. However, a RedOctane spokesperson said that the contents of the first downloadable offerings havenʼt been nailed down yet, so for now it all remains something to speculate on.)

We were assured that, as youʼd expect, Guitar Hero II will have a standard offering of achievements through gameplay, which we assume will comprise 1,000 Gamerscore points. Also, the game will include online leaderboards, so players can “track their high scores and share bragging rights with their friends and other top rock gods.” A RedOctane spokesperson said that leaderboards will likely be set up for weekly and monthly stat tracking, though more details will follow in that regard before the game ships.
