CGI, real actors, in game, out game, προσωπικά χ#%^στηκα**

Star Trek Legacy

1. Does anyone know how the controls will work on the 360 pad?

so far we know from videos etc , that each button on the four pad switches you between ships, you use menues to repair and adjust your settings on ships, buttons to fire phasers and photons.

2. Is the game an RTS or is it a Tactical Squad type game more akin to something like Myth.

Been argued that it's rts, but it really isn't. The game is based of the concept of advancement threw a story plot that within each chapter allows you to gain command points to buy better and bigger ships as you progress threw each generation of star trek. So basicly it's more tatical squad since you can control up to 4 ships and to gain those ships (or newer ones) you progress threw the story and how well you do determains how many command points you are awarded allowing you to buy bigger and better ships from each era as you get to them.

3. Are there production units/bases or is it a "you get the ships you start with and that's it"

You get ships to start with, then as you progress you build your fleet. In another video interview on the xbox360, it was mentioned that the game starts the player off with one ship and you add as you progress, Over 80 ships total, but I think that 80 ofcourse is counting all factions and you only play the feds in the single player game. MP allows you to play borg, fed, rom and kling. Also there are bases per say, it was stated you can take you ship and dock with a station to repair etc, but there is no "production" in the game known in most rts type of structures.

4. Will popular mods hit the 360 marketplace? And will they be free since our PC bretheren will surely enjoy such mods at no cost?

Was stated no mod support for 360 sadly, while the pc does have this option. However in another topic in another forum, one of the devs did mention the obvious "if the game does well then chances are more will be coming"

5. Are 360 and PC servers going to be seperate?

yes, Xbox is over the xbox live and pc will be over gamespy.

6. How do Command Points work in multiplayer?

In another video, a dev deminstrates this well, you can pick your number of players, computer or human, objectives, (coop or not) , point totals , era you want to play in etc.. decent amount of options. (not all we hoped for but decent).. as far as details, command points are pre-determined by you the host and everyone has those points to spend to build their fleet. Also you can limit the number of ships as well (max of 4 each, or less of 1)

Hope this helps.

Tom Clancy's Firehawk

Ubisoft claimed it doesn't exist but it was listed on a leaked release schedule earlier this year that has so far proven accurate with a view to games that the company has in development.

Since Clancy games adhere to realism in a militaristic sense, we should be able to garner an idea as to the possible genre through simply figuring out what Firehawk has to do with the modern military. Surely it can't be another shooter! I don't think it is, i think it's something completely different and i think Ubisoft are looking at new genre's to take their highly acclaimed Clancy games in.

Firehawks are Sikorsky S-70A Black Hawk helicopters that are used for firefighting, search &rescue, medical evacuation, and external lifting of bulky cargo and equipment. But what does that have to do with the Clancy universe i hear you say - well, i know something that you dont and making firefighting Black Hawk helicopters fit between Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six is far easier than most would realize.

Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six are going to cross over. Its going to happen in March 2007 when Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is released. If you have played through Rainbow Six: Vegas you will know that the game starts in Mexico. You will also know that the terrorist action going on in Las Vegas are a diversion meant to keep the US military occupied and that the real objective is far more sinister.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 will see players once again fighting in and around Mexico but this time also on the US side of the border - in Nevada no less. Ghost Team will be tasked with aiding the US military in repelling an invading army. Interesting no? I mean, there are people who claim that Clancy games don't have a properly fleshed out storyline, what will they say to this?

So what we have is Team Rainbow and Team Ghost fighting a common enemy against a single aim, the invasion of the US mainland. How then does a Firehawk helicopter fit into all of this? Well by my reckoning - the events that have transpired in Rainbow Six, and those that are set to transpire in GRAW 2 would set the perfect scene for a game where search & rescue, transporting of men and armor, medical evacuation and most importantly firefighting are the staple goals. Surely?

Gears made Live more popular

Some people who count Internets have reported that Xbox Live usage went up 80 per cent in the US after the release of Viva Piñata.

(And Gears of War, obviously - but let's be honest about who did what.)

Sandvine Incorporated says it observed the jump in usage across a sampling of American broadband service providers shortly after 7th November, which saw Gears, Piñata and four other 360 games ship to stores.

It's comparing the leap in popularity of the online gaming service to the one it noticed after the launch of Halo 2 in 2004.

"The effect Gears of War and other games are having on networks indicates to service providers that online gaming is not just a craze," says Sandvine president and CEO Dave Caputo, who has an excellent, moogle-esque name.

"Their networks must be equipped to protect this increasingly valuable traffic from the effects of a best-effort network," he gobbledegooked.

"Other multimedia applications like video downloads onto iPods are increasingly becoming popular, so service providers need to identify these trends early in order to proactively ensure there is adequate capacity to support the extra bandwidth usage," Caputo concluded.

Too right. For more on Gears of War, pick up a fistful of mud and look for the nearest person whose shoulders are less than six feet across.

Blue Dragon Arrives

A look at the packaging, and some early impressions.

The Xbox brand's biggest Japanese title ever is about to hit Japanese retail in a little over 12 hours from the time of this story's publication. But seeing as how Blue Dragon has been in my top five most wanted list since its announcement, I decided to head out to a secret shop located in some secret location in the heart of the Tokyo wilderness. At this gamers' haven, games are unofficially sold one or two days in advance of their official release. I walked -- no, skipped -- home with a copy of the Xbox 360's first big-name Japanese RPG.

There are many reasons to celebrate the release of this particular Xbox 360 title. In addition to marking producer Hironobu Sakaguchi's return to gaming following the whole Final Fantasy movie thing, Blue Dragon brings together some big development talent, including character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Blue Dragon also deserves mention as being the 360's first multi-disc game. And here, multi disc means a total of three discs packed with Japanese RPG content. The game still managed to ship in a standard-sized case, though, as you can see here.

Microsoft Japan has been hyping this title like no Xbox game before it. The Shounen Jump comic empire, which got the first scoop on the Blue Dragon project just about two years ago, has had a big hand in the promotions, with monthly updates in its V Jump videogame themed magazine and an upcoming comic. Microsoft itself has been taking a more direct approach to marketing, with a set of commercials (many of which can be downloaded in our Gaming Life in Japan ad corner).

Things have recently kicked into high gear on the promotion front. Just today, this appeared a few minutes from the IGN Japan office near Tokyo's Shibuya train station:

blue-dragon-arrives-20061206020846300-000.jpg

blue-dragon-arrives-20061206020844315-000.jpg

This display, part of the "Big Shadow Project," has been set up in a parking lot that was erected a year ago on the grounds of a demolished building. The animated shadow counter is being cast on the side of the next door building. From 12/7 to 12/10, Microsoft will let the public into the event space to see what it's like to have a giant shadow.

A bit more traditional, Microsoft will be holding an official launch countdown event for Blue Dragon. The event will kick off at 9:00am on Thursday morning at the Akihabara Yodobashi Camera, one of the largest electronic shops in Japan (this place had nearly 3,000 people lined up for the Wii last week).

So how has this three year, heavily hyped project turned out? I've just started playing, so obviously it's a bit hard to comment. Your adventure begins almost immediately after you press the start button, with a CG/realtime mixed cinema showcasing the coming of a periodic storm, and how Shu, Jiro and Kluke, two of our heroes and one of our heroines, decide to do something about it.

There's at least one strange quirks worth mentioning. Blue Dragon has short narrational voice messages that indicate when things happen to you. When someone joins your party, the narration says "Join Up." When an enemy spots you, the narration says "Detected." When the game switches from a cinema scene to a player controlled segment, the narration says "Playable." I'm not sure if I've ever seen this in a Japanese RPG before -- and with good reason, as it gets old real quick.

But that's just a minor complaint with what will hopefully be the biggest next generation RPG yet. Turn back soon for a whole lot more from Blue Dragon, including videos and full gameplay impressions.

NY Times: Compares all 3 consoles

Duking It Out for a Houseful of Smiles

PICKING out a home video game system should be easy this holiday season because for most consumers the decision ought to come down to only three choices — including one that is easily dismissed.

STANDING OUT For serious gamers, there is much to like about the Xbox 360.

If you or your loved ones are even halfway-serious gamers who want to experience world-class high-definition graphics and an online gaming service populated with millions of other players, go buy the top version of Microsoftʼs Xbox 360 ($399).

On the other hand, if you do not really care about the latest graphics and want instead a riotously fun experience that can be shared by the entire family, including the nongamers who usually flee from a joystick, try to get your hands on Nintendoʼs new Wii ($249).

It is really that simple. Though aimed at different markets, the 360 and the Wii provide excellent entertainment for the dollar and are each capable of filling your home with smiles for years to come.

But what about Sonyʼs new PlayStation 3?

By now, you have probably heard about folks who camped out for days to buy the PS3. You have heard about some of those people getting mugged while shivering in line a few weeks ago. You have heard about the four-figure prices the console has been fetching on eBay. And you may have heard, quite correctly, that it will be all but impossible for many consumers to buy one at retail for the rest of the year.

No problem. In fact, if you are anything other than a complete Sony fanboy (thatʼs Internet lingo for an obsessed, myopic groupie) go ahead and forget about the PlayStation 3 this year. Even if you find one, the overhyped PS3 does not deliver an entertainment experience commensurate with its cost ($599 for the top version, not including special cables to connect to a high-definition TV), and falls short of its main competition in important ways.

The big picture is that Microsoft and Sony are duking it out for dominance at the top end of the video game business while Nintendo has essentially carved out the less hard-core, more budget-sensitive swath of the market for itself. The Wii (pronounced “we”) is a mass-market entertainment device. The 360 and PS3, by contrast, are each trying to be the worldʼs best top-end video game system and also high-powered living room media hubs.

The big problem for Sony is that the 360 performs those functions better right now, and for less money, than the PS3. Sony may get the PS3ʼs act together in the future, but right now there is basically no rational reason to buy a PlayStation 3 instead of an Xbox 360.

Here are some reasons:

GAME SELECTION: 360 by a lot. There are more than 100 games currently available for the 360. The PS3 is scheduled to have fewer than two dozen games available by the end of the year, and most are available on the 360 anyway. With the notable exception of Resistance: Fall of Man, the PS3-exclusive games have been nothing to write home about.

ONLINE SERVICE: A slam-dunk for Microsoft, which is not surprising considering the two companiesʼ histories. Microsoftʼs Xbox Live offers easily downloadable games, TV shows and full movies, not to mention one of the worldʼs most fervent Internet gaming communities. The PlayStation Network is slow, clunky and makes it hard to keep track of your friends online.

OVERALL EASE OF USE: 360. Incredibly, perhaps, for a Microsoft product, the 360 is intuitive and relatively easy to navigate. Just as incredible, considering Sonyʼs past ergonomic mastery, the PS3 feels more like a specialized computer, so get ready to break out a separate U.S.B. keyboard.

GRAPHICS: An overall tie. The PS3 has more pure silicon horsepower under the hood than the 360, but some experts say it is actually more difficult to program the PS3 because of the systemʼs design. The bottom line is that the same games (like the Madden NFL series) look almost identical on the two systems, and the best-looking 360-only games, like the new Gears of War, look better than anything on the PS3 at the moment.

FILM PLAYBACK: A wash. The PlayStation 3 comes out of the box ready to play Blu-ray high-definition movie discs. The 360 can play HD-DVD high-definition discs only with an add-on ($199). The top version of the 360, however, includes a separate living room-style remote control for watching those movies, while watching films on the PS3 requires using a two-handed controller. (Sony says a separate PS3 movie remote will be available soon.)

There are all kinds of questions swirling around the industry about whether Sony will stage a comeback next year, but for now the 360 is the superior machine. Most telling, perhaps, Sony has lost many of its exclusive relationships with game publishers who were once willing to make their games work only on PlayStations. Two of next yearʼs most-anticipated games, Grand Theft Auto IV and Assassinʼs Creed, are scheduled to come out on both systems.

But what if carjackings and Crusade-era stabbings are just not your style? What if you do not want to hear about all the bells and whistles, do not want to spend as much as you would on a low-end PC and just want to have fun (with your children, possibly). In that case, the Wii is for you.

Its main innovation is a TV-remote-style controller that can merely be tilted and waved to produce in-game action, rather than having to master combinations of buttons and triggers.

The Wii comes with a collection of minigames called Wii Sports — baseball, bowling, boxing, golf and tennis — that demonstrate the appeal of the new controller masterly. (The Microsoft and Sony systems generally do not come with any games.) In Wii tennis, for example, users merely swing their arms as if holding rackets to make their characters swing on the screen. It is a system so intuitive that game-phobic adults often find themselves playing and laughing in minutes.

With two excellent systems on the market, consumers should not go wrong this holiday. Happy gaming.
