On10 Previews the Xbox 360 Wireless Wheel

Jesse and I visited the Xbox buildings again this week, this time to check out the soon-to-be-released Xbox wheel. Dennis Tom is the Program Manager for the wheel and he told us everything there was to know, including some neat info about the automotive design cues that went into it.

 

This new controller is sweet... and I've got to say... once you've tried it, going back to driving in Need for Speed: Most Wanted last night without a wheel was truly a disappointing experience (not that I didn't have fun... I beat #10 on the blacklist last night!). I've already started the process of convincing my wife that we need this wheel in our family room, so perhaps by the time it comes out (Dennis talks timelines in the video, but I believe it is in the second half of November) I'll be able to make it happen.

 

And just like the wireless headset... this will work with your PC as a wireless wheel if you get the wireless receiver...

Atari Jumps on the XBL Bandwagon

And Microsoft confirms games coming before Xmas

 

Coinciding with news that Contra will appear on Xbox Live Arcade this coming Wednesday, Atari's pledged support for the online marketplace, with six games -- Centipede, Battlezone, Asteroids, Missle Command, Tempest, Warlords -- to be released throughout 2007. As we've seen with Konami, they'll feature the usual visual and auditory facelifts, but with options to play the classics in their original forms.

 

Additionally, Microsoft's lifted the veil of secrecy of what other games -- Small Arms, Novadrome, Assault Heroes, Heavy Weapon, Defender, Contra -- will arrive before the end of the year, but without offering a concrete schedule. At least we know Contra's coming this week.

Gears of War getting sequel?

 

 

 

Cliff Bleszinski and Mike Capps from Epic Games have dropped a few hints about a sequel to Gears of War.

 

"We've spent time developing a rich universe for Gears, and the story is absolutely larger than the one told in the game," company president Capps told CVG.

 

"One could even argue that the ending cinematic leaves room for a sequel". Although obviously there are no specific plans yet.

 

 

"Wait for the gamers out there to play through the game before coming to any conclusions about future products," Bleszinski added, mysteriously.

 

"I love the universe and everything involved in it and if the game does amazingly well I wouldn't rule anything out!"

 

Judging by the amount of pre-release hype and the likely first-day sales, we doubt most people would rule it out.

Microsoft Unveils the Video Marketplace

Television shows, HD movies and more are coming to Xbox 360.

 

Here is a list of the examples of content available by the end of the year from the official press release:

 

# Robot Chicken" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" from Adult Swim.

# "CSI," "Survivor" and "Star Trek" from CBS.

# Emmy and Peabody award-winning "South Park." and "Chappelle's Show" from Comedy Central.

# "The Real World" and "Pimp My Ride" from MTV.

# "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "SpongeBob SquarePants" from Nickelodeon.

# "Skyland" and "The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival" from Nicktoons Network.

# "M:i:III," Nacho Libre" and "Jackass: The Movie" from Paramount Pictures.

# "Carpocalypse" and "Raising the Roofs" from Spike TV.

# "Race Rewind" from by NASCAR.COM.

# Select episodes of the original season of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series and the "UFC: All Access" shows from the UFC.

The big question on everybody's mind at this point is surely cost. Unfortunately, Microsoft wasn't very forthcoming with answers to this question saying only that the digitally distributed videos would be "competitively priced." However, a tutorial video put up on Xbox.com shows the HD movies priced at 480 Microsoft points ($6 USD) with the standard definition price of 320 points ($4 USD) while both versions of television shows clocked in at 240 Microsoft points ($3 USD) Television shows will be sold in much the same way that Live Arcade games are. After purchasing them with Microsoft points, owners will begin downloading them and will own the show. That means they can delete it off of their hard drive and download it at a later date without having to pay for it again. Movies will be output in a rental format. This is necessary in part due to the limited space on an Xbox 360 hard drive and the massive size of an HD movie. The standard definition movie we were shown clocked in at 1.2 GB while the HD version of the same movie was nearly four times as big at 4.7 GB. Once you download a movie, you'll have 14 days to begin watching it. After you start watching it, you'll have 24 hours before the rental expires and the movie is "returned."
